I realise that scripture of Muhammad is against the religion. Thus, devoted Muslims (at least, moreso than me) woudl go out of their way to stop the portrayal or publication of the prophet. Fine. From the Islamic POV, Muhammad being drawn at all is blasphemous, and so offence is taken. This is natural.
Not sure where the leap from “Okay, that guy did a drawing that (in our view) we can’t accept,” becomes, “So let’s beat the shit out of him,” happens.
It’s quite scary sometimes, the big gulf between people. And it’s not even about the morals of the religion, but rather how devoted (or more accurately, how self-righteous) some people get, and how in some cases the law/media help it or go against it too, though this probably applies to like…all religions. There’s a case in Malaysia in recent years where some people were protesting the setting up of an I think Hindu temple. It didn’t actually go about and impede anyone’s way, it was just a temple at an area. But some overzealous guys (mostly or all Muslims I think) got together, held a protest against the building of the temple by cutting off the head of a cow and bringing it around. The sense of entitlement that some people have is insane. That act wasn’t just a protest to something that wouldn’t hurt the country or Islam anyway (since after all, this place has many, many mosques and few temples) but a direct assault against another religion, another faith, which is just blah. (the Hindus didn’t go over and beat the shit out of the protesting Muslims either)
The way I see it, taking offence at something is fine. It’s natural even. But causing harm back is not helping the case. That’s two cents of mine.
there was a time in my life where, yes, i would have done some horrible shit to a person over the slightest shit. But honestly, i’ve seen funnier and crueler shit in my life. FFS, i’ve seen horrifying stuff on random internet websites that dwarfs my mother with a dick (truth be told, i already know my mom has had an interesting life).
I can understand wanting to hit a dude for saying something stupid. But some people take this shit to the extreme. You can NEVER say nothing is off limits, with regards to free speech. It’s a shitty deal, and will possibly bite you in the ass some time, but it will also come through for you in much better ways.

The true tragedy is that the Muslims who have never threatened anyone nor asked for anyone to be threatened will be painted with the same brush as the extremists. In turn, that will only serve to alienate them more from western society and make them more prone to radicalization.
It’s a vicious circle where both the silence of moderate Muslims and the overzealous suspicions of the west will only serve to widen the gulf between the two cultures. The only solution is for the moderates to break their silence, and for the west to break the taboo of criticizing religion.

If Lars Vilks were Dutch, I’m willing to bet Dutch society would praise Vilks’ free speech, but would criticize burquas, but I will admit I don’t know that much about what’s going on in the continent.
