If you look at a religion like Christianity, people worship crosses, pictures of Jesus, Mary herself. It’s become polytheist idol worship in the eyes of many. The Hadith cautions Muslims away from this. The reason Muhammad is not to be depicted is so that you don’t find yourself worshiping his image. Well, no one does that unless there are some mistaken laity in the Eastern Orthodox church. I think the EO’s position, if granted as being okay in technicality, is probably harmful to laity which don’t understand how they use “religious icons”. For the Catholic they are just images of faith, although I guess you could complain about their usage. They clearly aren’t supposed to be worshiped in Eastern Orthodox, by Catholics and certainly not by Protestants.
I have never felt like worshiping with or through some kind of cross, picture of Jesus, etc. I understand why they could potentially be a bad idea, but I think from our experience it is all in application and understanding of the theology/doctrines. That’s why I’m specifically uneasy about the EO view and kind of wish the Catholics would be a little different. I think the cross is heavily overused now by people that just think it looks cool to have it on a necklace, but to me it represents salvation and my faith. I think that’s the point.
