"Survey says!" Oni Match-up Thread

Oni Vs. Abel (Feel free to correct me and/or add input)

Start up of Air Grab**Butt Slam after start up of Air Grab is 99.9% Punishable

Abel’s lp/mp air grab (if done instantly after f.mk)
a. Will cause Reversal/Counter with lk/mk/ex buttslam
b. Will whiff against hk buttslam and cause reversal
b1. If Abel’s f.mk whiffs and they still do air grab, it will catch all buttslams on start up

Abel’s Ex Grab after f.mk
a. Will catch all butt slams but hk buttslam (if f.mk hits or if you block it)

Abel’s command throw (I would not even try to DP since we can’t fadc)

a. Catches all slashes
b. ON HIT/BLOCK of f.mk: lk/mk/ex butt slam will cause reversal and cross up free punish
ba. Hk Buttslam will confirm hit/knockdown

I’ll update later.

I have no clue how to fight Cody. Help.

I was waiting for someone to mention this match-up. I’m still flabbergasted that needles09 has Cody (and a -lot- more) in Oni’s favor in post #101 in this thread.
All of Oni’s normals seem to get out-ranged and out-prioritized by Cody’s, and Cody’s effective range is significantly better than Oni’s. It’s hard to shift the pressure when a lot of Cody’s specials can effectively end momentum and re-establish the pace in his favor. Two of Oni’s actually space Cody in favorable ones if he techs knockdowns.
I find myself using st.LK and even cr.LK a LOT in this match-up to stuff gap-closing specials. It works a lot in my vs Yun match-ups when you successfully bait an anti-fireball shoulder. I’ve traded and stuffed a good amount of mid-far range LK.ruffian kicks this way. I feel proper groundpounds need to be utilized a fair amount in the match-up in order to detach yourself from Cody’s strong horizontal zone control. I’ll be editing this post whenever I gather anything useful.

Alrights, been awhile since I’ve last post, here’s some of the things Oni players need to do against a pro Dee Jay player. Dee Jay will always try to throw his FB out of your F+ HP range or at meaty range and will continue pressure on Oni and especially during knockdowns. To avoid getting knockdown try not to use cr mk or hk because he has 2 options after a FB which is lk sobat goes pass all sweeping attacks (lowerbody invincibility) or he can slide, if you ever get hit by one of those, it will be back to square one or even worst into some ambiguous jump ins with kneeshot or jmk.

This war is won by footsies and spacing aka ground game, use st Hk to beat his slide and lk sobat at the range where your 2nd kick from HK would touch them however it will be much safer if you are in range for 2hits incase they jump, you will need to be aware of random jump in kneeshots or bait them to do it because they lost the ground wars, so that you can AA them with srk , cr hp or ( cr mk, kneeshot will whiff or you might hit em with it and combo into something you like**)**. Now outside of your st HK you might want to throw out random st lk or st mk to test his patience at times it might score some hits too if they try to slide or jump. Use F+HP and walk/dash back into your F+HP range, if he tries to attack he would need to get closer to you into your st HK range or he might just walk back FB and turtle it out for awhile which is in your favor because he is losing ground.

Do not try to jump in at all even if you score a knock down because EX Jackknife is a 4frame start up attack (Lk jackknife 6f) unless you can score a ground pound on him and do a safe jump if not do not ever try against Dee Jay not even cross-ups, his auto correct AA is just too good or should I say best in the game and we have to respect that. Once you stop him from abusing lk sobat you can start with random Focus Armor lvl2 baiting his safe distance slide. Blocked MK HK and EX sobat can be punished by doing st lk into lk / hk tatsu whichever you prefer.

Do not try to play fireball at mid range unless you want to take a risk not getting kneeshoted or EX sobat, only do it when you are at the other end like 80-100% away. If you ever wanna jump in after he throws a FB, use airdash into tatsu and hit em hoping that it might screw up his AA timings like his ( Slide, jump hp and st mp ). When you get in after a knockdown always try to play what Oni does best Minivortex game , like HK pound , HK slash or delay crouch tech OS into combos of your likings. Whenever you knock him down be cautious of his wake up mk jackknife (up-kicks), because Oni has a Huge hitbox it will interrupt whatever you try on wake up game, except cr mk which reduces your hitbox. If you manage to bait that out punish with cr mk into fireball fadc combo of your choice and even more powerful combos if you block the upkick because he will land close to you.

Corner is where you want Dee Jay to be so that you can pressure him more with your pokes eg (step kicks into blockstrings) and random hk pounds. I chose U2 for this match since U1 isn’t useful outside of ex slash combo and Dee Jay players likes jumping a lot which makes U2’s a better reversal. I personally do cr lk into st hp ex electirc FB >>> ultra2 or mk pound frame traps. Other notable stuff to use in the match is reading his fireball and counter attack with HK tatsu (Yomi) to push him to the corner, Slash is too slow to punish Dee Jay since Air slasher is 2nd best compared to Guile.

Match-up 5 / 5
Ultra of choice = U2
Game plan = Ground Game , Counter attacking and Footsies

Nice write up, Thanks

EQ you should make a thread and compile that (and any other writeups you want to do / that other people have done that are good) into the OP.

Hmm not a bad Idea , I’ll make one when I can spare some time on it.

The only match I’m familiar with (using Oni) enough to even talk about is Viper and Gouken lol. I appreciate EQ’s posts. They may seem bitchy sometimes but he is pointing out weaknesses that need to be known if your going to win

i think juri blanka and chun rape oni (chun rushdown s.mp and focus) whats he gonna do?! >.<

Agreed. In addition to their rushdown / footsies just being better than all of Oni’s options flat out, all of these characters can also just jump back and Oni can never catch them / do much of anything about it. They’re not the only characters who can do that, either.

YEP my feelings exactly, My biggst fear when im using oni is loosing the health lead. i feel to get back in on defensive players/characters requires very delicate, patient, and “spacious” play, basically keep them at a space where they run themselves into the corner. when i get too close they always somehow weasel their way around me -.-

If they are running away, you must GRADUALLY close the gap. Once they start getting close to the corner, start looking for them to try and jump back out or start attacking their way out. You can’t jump at Oni without being hit. And if they are trying to attack their way out, that’s when matchup knowledge becomes paramount. Know your spacing.

well you see i main chun, and when i get a lead i just play a stale defensive poke game with her s.mp its pretty gay =/ she baits out so many things and stuffs so many of his pokes not to mention ultra 1 oO i think chun vs oni is pretty stiff for oni.

Yes it’s pretty uphill for Oni. Same as every other matchup. But Oni does have ALOT of tools to keep up with Chun. I haven’t totally broken down the matchup yet. Sometimes it feels even, other times it feels like 7-3 Chun. The only things I know for sure is that you can focus the hazanshu and that you can stomp the wake-up ex sbk if you’re spacing is correct. Personally, I think it comes down to playing basic street fighter in the oni/chun matchup.

You are correct in that it does come down to basic street fighter, but Chun is much, much better at that. It’s definitely her advantage.

From my limited exp so far Oni has bad matchups against the following: Sagat, Ryu, Sakura, Dudley, Balrog, Cody, Yun, Ken, Sim, Akuma

Can’t honestly think of a matchup that Oni has a clear upper hand in, not even Gouken

I don’t think Oni beats anyone at all. It’s either even or a loss for him, and it’s more often the loss than it is even.

That may be a slight over-statement. I don’t think it’s that Oni doesn’t beat anyone. I think Oni is more along the lines of Gen. In order to have any success, you pretty much have to know EVERYTHING about the character and know which options to use at the correct time. Gen has more to learn, but they are alike in that you have to be really into the character and know all the in-depth characteristics.

I don’t mean he CAN’T beat anyone, but I do not think he has a single advantaged matchup. 5-5 at best. Maybe you could argue that he beats Hakan… but that’s really about it and even that isn’t likely imo.

And even then, Oni definitely has more 4-6’s than he has 5-5’s.

I mean obviously this is “just my opinion” but so are all matchup thoughts. I feel pretty confident in the accuracy of my assessment of his matchups.

I wish i could give a more accurate opinion of matchups, but ive only played him online and vs Offline locals
The players online are just too dim esp vs oni… and once lag kicks in, Onis out lol
I think you guys are being abit harsh on this character i dont think hes as bad as we are saying
Im originally a chun main so the wackass wakeup is nothing to me honestly >.<
