Super Smash Brothers

Heh, how is this different than SF, or any other community. Every one has people complaing about cheap tactics, claiming the game is something it isn’t, and so on.

The competition level in smash tho is pretty rediculous, there are tons of good players out there

The game isn’t balanced, but it’s kinda balanced in the way that something like ST is. Even shitty characters have good match ups.

So, I don’t know if its been mentioned, but new footage of SSB:B will be shown at Nintendo World this Friday. Might have new characters…

Well I been playing smash since 64 but never outside my group of friends. Im more into street fighter anyway, but how does a person in NY better himself at smash? I have one friend that is equal in skillz to me and the rest are good. For SF its easy cuz all I gotta do is hit up chinatown fair and I can get good comp (given its a good day) but what does a smash player do? I dont have anything against the smash community cuz im not in it and dont know much about to begin with lol. I wouldnt mind seeing smash tourneys in SF tournies but my sf pride will be scarred the day I see smash with a bigger pot than a SF game at evo ( a sf centered tourny).

There are two reasons my post was brimming with hate. One is that the smashboards (the SRK of SSBM) is knowledable and accepting of scrubs. People will post and say how X is cheap, and they’ll just be fine with it. The blatant and generally accepted scrubbery found in the Smash community is what ruined it. People say “oooooh, it’s cheap to use the Mario cape slap (or whatever it’s called) to spiral somebody off the edge” and they DON’T EVEN TELL THEM THEY ARE WRONG. Hell, there are even people who ay there should be limits on how many throws you use. Do they tell THEM that they’re wrong? Nope. They’ve become accepting of the scrub style. And when they do that, then they just aren’t acceptable as a fighting game community. It isn’t how they hate on the SFs and KOFs and such. Hell, if that were the case then SRK wouldn’t be any better. The difference is that they put up with crap.

And hell, their tournies even ban specific tactics (no playing the avoiding game as Fox? That’s stupid). If it is broken (which I don’t think it is) then the game is not worthy of tourney play. Personally, I think that Smash is a tournament-playable game. I just look down on many of the players.

No items, some way to deal with stage selection, and we have a solid competitive game.

But smashboards was still a sorry excuse for a forum last I checked, which wasn’t recently.

As long as there is extra space I don’t see any problem with having it along with other tournaments. Extra space isn’t something every tournament organizer has laying around though.

I don’t play SSB but I see people play Melee quite often at Web2Zone on Friday nights. Also they have big tournaments there and in a place in Brooklyn once a month from what some of the players tell me. I guess you can visit Smashboards for more info.

Or maybe no new characters :-(… http://blog.wired.com/games/2006/10/super_smash_bro.html

Peach all the way! also yeah i dunno about the early brackets but i saw the finals and DK was up there. Smash is actually very complex.

huh?

Deadly Alliance (DA) is where you go! Theyre team made it to finals in Vegas and got top 5 at MLG (Pro & amature) They are from NY!

Smash is awesome. I’ve also been playing since 64.

God I hope my main (Mario) isn’t removed in Brawl. (lol)

In any case, I’ve also come to the conclusion that the smash community is retarded. smashboards is just like 500 pages of “I think this character should be in brawl!” discussions.

Who cares about competative play? The game is just damn fun. Gimme all the stages and items, I love that shit. If I wanted to play SF, I’d turn on my PS2.

…seriously.

Because they actually make NEW smash bros games.

I don’t think Smash is complex, just technical really, and even then it’s not all that ‘mind boggling’. Truthfully I DO NOT like the competitve nature Smash has adopted, as I had more fun with it as a party game then I’ve evere had attempting to ‘play this game seriously’.

(I’m with Quiche on that point I guess.)

I haven’t played in a year though, and it’s sad how the one ‘SMALL’ Smash tournament I went to had more people then any other SF related tournament I’ve been to outside of majors and that one console tournament in NYC two years back (Newgrounds?)

And everytime I try and go back it’s just apparent that I’ve come in a bit too late as even 12 year olds end up raping my ass with Jigglypuff.

D:

Solid Snake gameplay >>>>> new characters.

Edit is your friend.

I think one of the worst things about Melee’s competitive play is Smash’s image in general. It looks and plays sort of like a random kid’s game, so lots of kids’ll get into that game. Wich makes most of the community kids. And since 1/1000 kids (7-12) are absolute morons nowadays, there’s not as much hope for a serious community.Wich just plain sucks.

I’m wondering if Smash was less Nintendo-esque awesome, looked more like a serious fighter, and was kept more silent, it would’ve been like the awesomeness of Guilty Gear.

Images suck. Too bad most of society relies on them.

Saw two ssbm threads next to each other, merged

There is but so much I can take…

When I read post about older gamers that are bashing on the younger gamer because of a game that they “SUCK” at it really upsets me. The reality of this is most of you are a shame that smash brothers has evolved passed street fighter as a game and community. YUP! Deal with it. Who cares about technicalities, immaturities, depth and other random topics that happens “THROUGHOUT” all competitive gaming. You will always have thoes random complaints. Thats just how gamers are…not just smash gamers.

Reading some of the stuff that a few of you guys have said I just don’t know. First of all lets go down the list shall we.

Gender Diversity: More female gamers play smash competitively than ST. Even though its nothing like Halo’s female gamer community

Age Diversity: Kids? Are you kidding me. You have gamers ranging from 7 to 30 plus playing smash. So whats the problem? Its like you want to take the lolipop out of the childrens mouth because the candy is sweeter than yours. Straight bitch shit!

Community Population: Whoot! OMG! I’ve been to Canada to Germany, Japan back to America. OWNED! They rape ST Community Free! You need to combine several versions of ST including 3S to equal Smash. Sadness!

Accessibility: Okay this is what makes no sense…the game has been out in less time than all of the street fighter’s and sadly enough it is the most sold “Fighting Game” (considered fighting, because it is a “MULTIPLAYER Party” game. That is the genre in which is recognized as). Anyone can get it, and everyone does. Its still selling without having to remake the game with Alphaizm’s to sell again.

Community Finance: Heh…this part is disgusting. Smash Locals have beaten every major Street Fighter community pot for the last 3 years with the exception of EVO 2006. When you have 1000 1st place winnings as a local …oh wait with a 110 man plus entry at web2zone…then there is just nothing that I can tell you. Here in nyc, DA host a “Gauntlet” once each moth and the average turn out is 70 plus, and thats just for NYC, lets not talk about DC, NJ, VA, PA, FL, TX and throughout the United States.

Community Forums: Well this one I call it a draw. While the “So” called kids are on smash boards complaining and talking about random stuff that annoys you, SRK has teenage/adult threads about masterbation tournaments. Go figure!

You sheltered gamers need to come out. Your not even underground because Underground knows the deal. Stop hating. If its not for you then keep it moving. Throwing out random negative post about a game that is growing…and no you can’t do anything to stop it so deal it with… is not good for any community. The game will be in every major tournament in 2007 in the FGC.

The stupidest part of this entire things is…most of these communities are so immature, arrogant and pride filled. Instead of adopting the game because its a good competitive community that can help stablize ST’s community you bash against it. Come on man…Mario is extending his hand to help you Ryu, be a real street fighter warrior and acept his help. Mario is not your enemy he is the God Icon of gaming. DP doesn’t beat Starman that just facts!

Watch the flaming…bring it bitches.

Triforce

  1. Fighting games were a fad. The in thing for several years here in the United States. If you knew of video games at the time, then fighting games were all anyone was playing. Even with video gaming not being mainstream, it was still wildly and absurdly popular, enough so that 20 years later people can instantly recognize the likes of Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li.

  2. The fad died out in the United States, and with it the environement that it had helped to create / support (arcade centers), thus anyone who was still around playing was more or less underground, hardcore, what have you.

  3. Smash Brothers came along as a PARTY GAME FIRST AND FOREMOST, but was slowly shaped into something else.

  4. In time, and most noteably because of the sheer ease of marketing the likes of Mario, Link what have you, Smash popularity went through the roof. It’s not a fad, because it was never in any environment outside of your home. You got a Gamecube? Excellent, then you got Smash, simple as that. No sticks to buy, no 2 hour treks to play competiton, no shit holes in the wall called an arcade to bring back an ‘old school’ feel, because more than likely you had comp sitting in your backyard.

I think Smash was the right thing at the right time really. I still think it’s CRAZY how popular it’s gotten, but still pretty awesome. That still doesn’t keep me from enjoying it the way I USED to play it, and absolutely hating on how GAY Fox / Shiek are, but whatever.

Damn it now I want to play it.

Smash had to be molded into a competitive game. I like the game and I have played it seriously for quite some time. And as MC said, is doing as well as it is because Nintendo characters are huge selling icons. But I’ve kinda grown tired of the competitive scene because the top tiers are constantly rearing their ugly heads. Last big tournament I remember was OC2 back in August and 8 of the top 13 players used Sheik. And people say Marth is broke? Uh…yeah. The only Marth player in the top 25 of that tourney was none other than Ken.

TFGM, I understand all the points you are making but just so I don’t misunderstand, are they points that argue that Smash is better than SF etc? That’s really debatable and it’s not something I would like to get into. I think the superiority complex that the traditional fighting game scene and the Smash scenes have is what prevents them from getting along.

You know; looking back at my post I’m not sure why I gave cliff notes on the history of fighting games. I guess it made me feel smart. I’m just going to pat myself on the back and be done with it on that note.

pat

Well, it all made sense though and it put Smash in a different perspective.

My one question is, why the US competitive Smash scene never switched over to PAL version because all the top characters were properly nerfed. Sheik being the most obvious because she loses her gay ass chain throw.

If Smash WAS going to appear at Evo…what should the setup be?

Free for all? 2, 3, 4 men? Items?

Items are obviously out of the question. Attacking and getting killed by a random falling explosive container is NOT fun.
