Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii are very amused

Best Game ever, is Jedi Mode:

Laser swords, Blasters, and motion sensor bombs.

Why?

Because you can say things like, “Ancient religions and hokey weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.”

and everyone knows that a Jedi would never get hit by a motion sensor bomb, those seperate the men from the mice. :wgrin:

I love playing GIANT MODE with -damage %, and nothing but super/poison mushrooms on. Super Giant Peach bitchslap v.s. uber-tiny Pichu ftw.

In fact, I hope it gets to the point where you can customize it that you can have 3 super-small characters v.s. a super giant… without using Action Replay or something. :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with you 100%. Smash is about your ability to use the stage, items, and even other players to your advantage. The problem with the smash community is they’re trying to make smash into a more traditional fighter. Now, I love Street Fighter as much as anyone, but if I want to play Street Fighter I’ll play that and if I want to play Smash I don’t want it to be a dumbed down version. The sad thing is that it’s too late for melee.

I just hope in Brawl you can’t turn the supers off. Maybe that will make people start using everything and not bringing it down to it’s simplest level.

Maybe it’s going to be normal items and stage specific items. Like you can grab things that fly by or something like that.

Does anyone think shffls were intentional? It’s like the competitive Smash scene only allows play were “bugs” can be exploited.

I’d like to see the shffl removed, as in, once you hit the ground, you’re grounded.

actually the opposite is the truth. in some stages fox is INVINCIBLE in some matchups as he can run away and shoot lazers and some characters won’t ever be able to catch him. but he can’t do that in final destination.

well, we know that they meant to include all of the aspects of shffl’ing (short hop, fast falling, l canceling) although I dunno if they knew it was gonna be such a huge part of the game when all of these tools are used together.

Items are banned because of randomness, and that’s it. Whoever above already explained the reason why–you don’t want randomly appearing capsules/boxes to screw up combos or make you lose for no reason.

As far as randomness being a factor in competitive games, you might want to reconsider that. Professional badminton is played in closed gyms so wind won’t randomize birdie movement; balls in sports are kept as spherical as possible and at a consistent weight/size so trajectory/bounce is predictable. . .for the most part, competitive games want to reduce randomness, so the only thing that’s left is a player’s skill in determining who wins.

There are very few games in which the game itself is built around randomness; Poker happens to be one of them. Otherwise, I really can’t think of many competitive games where randomness is welcomed by its players.

Right…

But then you have characters like Faust and Robo-Ky with specials that can damage themselves (and lose matches from it), Faust’s OD is random, and Zappa is the literal meaning of the word random.

Not in the entirely same light, but still random.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Umm…

I dont know about anyone else, But most of the tournaments I’ve been to have Seperate Contests. There is no item, certain maps banned tournaments. There is anything goes on any map tournaments. And then there is the same but as team tournaments. My feelings on the situation are this. If you dont care about Improving your overall FIGHTING skill in the game, then items are the way to go. the game is more “Fun” with itmes on, but only if your not playing seriously. From my personal experience, nothing angers me more then when your dominatiing someone and theyre at say 120%+ and then you smash them to the other side of the map, and all of a sudden, a Heart and two Maxim Tomatos fall into they’re lap. In that instance, It takes away from everything youve done to beat that player.(IMO). The main thing is your Given an option to turn them off. I really Doubt Nintendo would not give you the option to turn anything off. They know how big the game is and that certain people like to play it like a normal fighting game, and that other people like the crazy Randomness that initially grabbed peoples attention. I still like playing the game both ways, but me and my friends definetly play with Items Off, more then Items on.

i second this comment

hell the disigner of smash said that items and stage where used to balance the characters… example if a none projectile character like donkey kong grab a projectile weapon like the star rod he shots more stars or does more damage… and the lighter characters like kirby are more capable of getting past obsticles and getting to items… that was all done to balance the game but without them these characters became worthless…

I completely agree with the statement about items. However, people are too anxious about random things that will lead to an automatic victory, however unlikely it is.

I play with items on always whenever i play with friends; smash at tournaments is too boring for me.

Kirby

I’ll admit DK isn’t the greatest of Characters, But Kirby, when played well, Isn’t that bad of a character. He has a fairly obtainable one hit kill when your opponent is over the side of the level.

>_> its called items = broken lol. bring that to the melee thread now.

I grabbing a star pretty much is the most skillful thing in the game. I mean one time I ALMOST MISSED IT

the thing about items is…they unbalance the game. With items on Fox is even higher up the tiers and Bowser is even lower…the list spreads out furthr and there is less balance.
As for stages, the ones that are banned are done for the same reason. If playing with winning foremost in mind then a Fox on Temple will never lose if vs. any other character unless they don’t know how to play to win(there is a really simple method to this situation that guarantees a win). Take Fox on any stage with a permanent wall and about half of the cast of characters are victim to an infinite…take Fox on a stage with walk off ledges and you have a trap for KOs on characters that consist of 1 to 3 hits from 0%. And by no means is it just about Fox…look at Peach on Yoshi’s Island 64…only 1 or 2 characters can do anything to her if she decides to run off and stand on the cloud-platform furthest from the stage.
Now let’s look at the default vs. mode settings. Other than the stages and items we already talked about the settings are 2 minute time match. In this battle the winner is decided by points, points are earned by KOs, points are lost by getting KO’d, so essentially each time you KO your opponent you gain a point and they lose a point. The smart player knows however that all they need to do to keep their opponent from gaining ANY points…is self destruct. This is why the options are modified so that the winner is decided by lives instead of by points.

While some might speak of what the game is supposedly about or what developers intended for the game they fail to realize that those things have no bearing on anything. If those supposed guildelines were followed(it wouldnt be easy as what ppl think these guidelines are varies greatly from person to person) then the game would suffer enormous imbalance and the large community of players and the tournament scene would have lifespan and player community little longer and little larger than those of say… Naruto Ultimate Ninja.

I don’t think myself that the current rules and settings for the melee tournament scene are perfect and as they should be. Subtle changes still need to be made and the rules are still evolving, but changes are not going to be made by an inexperienced casual player with no credibility. Only they players with experience in the community who are educated in not the intentions of the developers, but the mechanics of the game will bring about the needed subtle changes in the rules. Keep in mind…all of this in no way means that items/stages/coin matches/etc. are not fun.

So… Gooey Bomb was revealed today, guys. Awesome.

Lol, how much you wanna bet the next updates will be 2 of the “newcomer” characters, with the exact same profiles that were already on the site before the redesign.

Actually, if you look at the “characters” page, you’ll see that it’s separated so “veteran characters” is its own section. Maybe that means that we’ll see some returning chars like yoshi, dk, and captain falcon before we see wario, metaknight, pit, z-samus, and snake again.

…seriously.

Yeah… Nintendo is basically killing their own hype imo. People can only take so many tidbits of nothing before they get fed up.

or maybe at 3am est tommorow morning they will put up adventure mode for the first game mode in his blog.
