Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii are very amused

secret characters suck, when i buy a fighting game, playing 1player is the last goddamned thing on my mind

the only acceptable 1player mode in existance is virtua fighter 4: evos, because the ai opponents werent total shit

I highly doubt that Nintendo would get all the licenses to put characters like Megaman, Sonic, and sora in.
If so that will delay the game into 08.

Brawl was 1 of the 1st titles nintendo promised would be on the Wii (back when it was called the Revolution), so they must not delay it too long.

Besides, I’ll find where I read it, but the President of Konami begged (<- just what i read) for Snake to be in Melee, but Melee was pretty much finished. And I read that Sega asked for Sonic to be in, but once again the game was finished.
Sakurai had put snake in because of some past affiliation w/ Konami, if Nintendo could have picked any character they want, they would’ve picked some1 like capcom (SF) or Sega.

IMO, I think Konami will be the only other brand of characters in the game.

I concur, a lot of wishful thinking in this thread.

Mega Man and other Capcom characters are never going to be in melee. Capcom and Nintendo haven’t been terribly friendly since the NES licensing issue, and I doubt we’ll see much Capcom fare for the Wii at all.

Sora? Like hell, it’s not like Squenix has made a good decision since they were formed.

I do expect to see Alucard, however, and possibly Soma and/or a Belmont character. They’d be unique in the game in terms of style, would fit the playstyle well, and Konami is already on board.

Alucard is known for Symphony of the Night, I don’t think he’s going to make it in.
Soma’s pretty hated among some Castlevania fans, so I don’t see many people liking that. Even if I wouldn’t mind.
I’m pretty skeptical of how many 3rd party characters are going to make it in. Nintendo can’t really be trusted to do anything but make a good game, they pretty much throw everything they promised out the window somewhere along the way. At least that’s what happened with Twilight Princess.

Dude. Snake is known for Metal Gear Solid, which is mostly a PS game too, and yet…Snake!

Also…FOZ, Nintendo does make bad games. SSB Melee was fun, but it was a steaming pile if you treat it like a fighting game and start taking it seriously. Too many bugs. They have a LOT of problems on their quality assurance end, and generally put out cool games, with a lot of problems.

I hope the delay of Brawl was for more testing, myself, but I still stand by a CV appearance of some sort. I know a lot of CV fans hate Soma (Me, for one), but he’s largely popular and makes Nintendo appearances a lot. Simon could be another shoe-in, because everyone who knows anything about Castlevania knows who he is.

Simon
Pit’s already in
Megaman

If the above three or in, Captain N better be there.

^In that case Megaman would probably be a green suit wearing midget witht the voice of a chain-smoker.

God, this lack of info is killing me inside. I don’t really mind if they keep the 3rd-party characters a surprise, but I at least would like to see who else is returning and if they’ll be changed (e.g: Zelda with sword from Twilight Princess FTMFW).

Just wishful thinking.
He would fit the game mechanics pretty well though.

But you shouldn’t treat it like a fighting game. That’s why I hate competitive play. What’s so amusing about wave-dashing around until someone gets hit? It’s meant to be fun, yet people will take any chance they can to assert their “superiority” at a goddamn video game, and call people who play Smash Bros. the way it’s meant to be played n00bs, or something stupid like that.

Snake is known for his Playstation games, but has had games on Nintendo platforms, so the companies are close enough to put their characters in. But anyone beyond Snake would just seem weird.

And I hope it’s original Simon, not the one with red hair. Or just forget Simon and put in Richter.

That rat guy with the shades from SMB 2

Alucard is kind of rough… because for his Nintendo appearances there’s Castlevania 3 where the character is completely different. Then there’s that GBA Sofia Belmont game where he appears as a villain and that game has been removed from the canon so I doubt Konami would want anything to reference that game. And there’s his appearances as Arikado but that’s also fairly different. Yeah, Alucard is mostly known for SOTN which hasn’t appeared on a Nintendo platform. But anything is possible so who knows.

I don’t know about Capcom and Nintendo not being friendly. Nintendo did let Capcom make Zelda games after all. For the Wii they still have Residend Evil Umbrella Chronicles coming out for it, who knows what else because it’s fairly early, and they like everyone else has to figure out how to make games for that Wii mote… Inafune is working on a future Wii game though - http://wii.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=8617 - All of these companies have their little beefs but at the end of the day business is business. Of course I’m not saying that anyone from Capcom will be in Brawl because I’m not psychic.

And most of the talk of third party characters comes from Sakurai, who said there won’t be that many more third party characters, maybe 1 or 2. So most of this third party talk is his fault, not wishful thinking on our this thread’s part. Well okay maybe a little but Gamefaqs is still FAR WORSE. Sure, maybe 1 or 2 could also mean zero - but if he didn’t want the internet to go nuts he wouldn’t of said anything like that…

Sora’s name did make it on to the list of characters fans wanted to see in the game in Sakurai’s poll, at the very least it’s a suggestion he liked and felt like sharing it. So he at least has that going for him. Course that could mean nothing since someone also requested James Bond and someone else asked for Pinnochio… :looney: Well, Sora was at least on a game for a Nintendo console (unlike Sephiroth… not gonna happen) but does Squeenix own all of the rights for him? Don’t they have to share custody with Disney? That little Mickey Mouse Head chain on the Keyblade may cause problems…

Captain N… weeell… I can tell you for the upcoming DVD set of Captain N Nintendo has shown veeery little support in it’s creation, unlike the upcoming Sonic DVD Cartoon set that got a lot of support from Sega all throughout. But it seems that recently Nintendo has changed their tune on it and they are being very supportive of it, now that the DVD set is being heavily demanded lol! Still gonna take a miracle to get Captain N in this game of course, Nintendo USA just started caring about it, how long’s it gonna take for Sakurai to care - never gonna happen…

Big ol’ thread about the Captain N DVD -

Nintendo support! And trust me, if you dig through the above link the Nintendo Support came reeeeeeally late…

Captain N DVD comes out February 27!

And still no news on this game… hence, most of my rambling. :crybaby:

I hope Sonic will be in there

As much as I hate to break this to you but
Good players don’t wave dash like it’s the only thing worthwhile to do, it’s another option, mostly for ledge-grabbing from the ground quickly, and a different kind of evasive maneuver compared to rolling, hell for some characters it’s near useless!

A good game with a large playerbase is often, that is, in most cases, enjoyed by any player, and sometimes praised for being great is
A) Simple
B) Deep

Chess, Starcraft, Counter-Strike, and many many other extremely popular multiplayer games follow those two rules, because it fucking works. Lamenting the fact that the game has depth is retarded on all possible levels. Let it work for whoever plays it, not be another forgettable game. That isn’t to say simplicity OR depth do not work on any level either. Jump rope at it’s base level is incredibly simple, yet many people play it (I’m aware there is competitive levels of jump rope, but I’m ignoring it for this example). Hell, simplicity is why the Wii is so damn popular right now. Even if you do not classify Smash Bros as a fighting game (which it is in all purposes, has the closest relation to on multiple levels), it still has depth, and you should accept this fact, it is better for the game itself and the playerbase.

I wasn’t denying it had depth, I never said anything like that, and I don’t lament that it has depth. What I don’t like is the arrogance of some people when it comes to Smash Bros. I’ve seen people come into “Your favorite item” threads just to say “items are for n00bs and I never play with them.” That’s just plain stupid. Games are meant to be played for fun, but too often, especially with fighting games, people forget that games are played to be enjoyed, not so you can be a dumbass to everyone else.

I don’t really see many people playing GGXX/ for fun. The majority of fighting games require a serious time investment and a high level of commitment before you achieve any level of skill; this means that the majority of people who play these fighters are people who value winning above all else, and therefore make everyone else lose. Or in your words, people value “being a dumbass to everyone else.”

That just comes with the territory of a fighter. The whole point is to win; of course, there’s the winners-that-respect-you, and the winners-that-are-arrogant-pricks, but the fact remains that a competitive game like a fighter is going to generate the kind of crowd that takes the game a bit too seriously.

For these types of people, their version of fun involves a “win”–or rather, a hardcore, up-the-ass rape/ownage. Given this, of course they’re going to view people that play the game casually with contempt.

Not that this justifies their attitude, of course. But that’s how the some of them think.

Even when I didn’t know what wavedashing or shffling was, I still thought items were for noobs.

What I think is so good about smash is it has two very distinct ways you can play the game. You can either play “for fun”, where you have all the items on, play on all the stages in 4 people free for alls. However, there is also the “competitive” way you can play. No items, usually the 6 neutral stages and with all the advanced techniques. And only the scrubs of the competitive scene will go into threads and say “items are for noobs etc etc”. The people who have been around the competitive scene longer will just recognize that it’s how they choose to play the game and as long as they are having fun, it’s fine.

Items are taken away to minimize randomness in tournaments. They aren’t bad persay, but tournaments ARE a measure of skill and removing items minimizes any random possibilities of loss. The fact that this carries over into casual play is merely dependant on the people that play the game. The worst part is you act like these people AREN’T having fun. Just because their opinion of fun differs from yours does not mean you should look at them with contempt. They play to win, or play to learn to win. That does not make them better or worse.

Regardless, people who go into a thread saying “items are for n00bs” are just as ignorant as you dismissing opinions based upon ignorant forum posts.

What it sounds like to me is that you basically think your definition of fun is universal, it’s not. And if I sound arrogant to you, you’re sounding extremely ignorant to me.

I didn’t say they weren’t having fun. I said they were forgetting that games are about having fun, not so you can insult (does an insult have to insult someone? If so, then I’ll say “attempt to insult”) people. Even if they are having fun, does that mean they can make fun of people just because they have fun at a more competitive level? No.

While I think streetfighter has more advanced short ranged combat. I think Smash is superior in at least 2 ways.

*combo system: combos are really skill based in this game. You can’t just dial in combo strings and get a set amount of power dealt. It more complex. You have to factor in weight, angles, recovery time and size/height.

*Priority:When 2 moves hit each other they clank and the more powerful move gets frame advange out. This is a step up from what Streetfighter has.

*Terms of Victory:taking damage doesn’t=win as much as it “taking damage=easier to win by knocking out of the arena”. So its much more dynamic. You have to take damage AND knock them off the stage.

*Recovery/Edgeguard: When your off the stage you have get get back on while fighting in mid air.Edgeguarding is the same thing but the other way around. You have to stop them from getting on the stage while keeping yourself from being edgeguarded.

*Block is toned down:You can’t just turtle in this game with block(it gets worst as the shield is damaged more). But there are tactics that make using the block instumental like shield grabing and b out of shield attacks, jump out of shield and one that I can do powershield into WD.

*Zoning -This alone is EXTREMELY advanced. You have moves that can be beat at certian angles and ranges. By using the WD this gets VERY complex(luigi).combos can be extended with WD and you can hover around thier max range just to bait them into whiffing. You can WD back and setup a SHFFLer with a shieldgrab or WD+spotdodge nullify most projectiles(I said most not all). You have to play CPUs to find at what angles do attacks get beat and how to WD into position to beat it (like luigi can WD under doc and Uair his Fair and beat it clean or Cyclone on top of a pill to beat the pill and hit doc or green missile at a precise lower angle compared to the projectile and he goes .)
