That’s a cool idea. Maybe it could be a game mode…Assist Trophy Melee or something.
Basically, Assist Trophies are the same as Pokeballs. They just dont call Pokemon.
I like the assist trophy idea, its interesting. items might have place in high level play, only question is would the smash community be open about it >_>
Nope. They hate anything and everything that is even the slightest bit random for tournament play.
I can 100% guarantee they will turn items off for tournament play. “Items are just for fun”

So, would the Smash community be open about it? You mean the same way the community was open to item usage the first two + years of Melee’s competitive history, only to come to the conclusion that it didn’t work?
The objective question to ask is whether or not Brawl’s item system lends itself to the community’s standards of competitive play.

Awesome double dose there! I didn’t think I wanted Samurai Goro in Smash before, but he looks like he’ll fit right in! The assist thing looks pretty badass,too! Now would a release date be too much to ask?

yes but, theres bound to be the advocates (more like scrubs) who won’t give items a chance. thats what my post was directed at, whether or not that’ll have an impact on the scene.
If the items are less chaotic in brawl as they were in melee i think they’ll be kept at least for a while until you know you know someone looses a major tourney because a random capsule fell and blew up killing someone at 20 % <_<
Yeah, but you can’t throw Assist Trophies. There are strategic implications to consider. Because they are summoned on the spot, will assist trophies have a lot of range? Or will pokemon prove better because you can hit your opponent with the ball and/or use the pokemon as an edge guard? We probably won’t know until the game comes out.
i doubt they are gonna put a character who could have seriously been a contender in the trophy, its mostly gonna be obscure characters or characters that just appeared in mabye 1 game i bet. You can already see 3 of them and none of em are worthy of being made into characters (i actually saw the goro update and was prepared to get pissed before i read the rest). i mean comeon, hammer bros? NINTENDOGS??? im GLAD neither of these characters were even attempted to make into full characters, cs that would just take away from characters that could have been made. Honestly the only way i would be mad is if they put a truly viable character like diddy kong in the trophy, but by the looks of it they would be more prone to put dixie kong or kiddie kong in it or someshit so im ok with that.
i like the new item, even though it is just a different version of a pokeball basically, it still will up the amusment factor. Especially when you first get the game and use it and you discover all the different characters they incorporated.
I understand that some items should be turned off because of the randomness (pokeballs, assist trophies, eggs, etc.) and brokeness (bats, starman, etc.) but other items could be used during tournament play.
Right my bad, for some reason I was comparing them to assists in other fighting games.
The idea that they appear randomly in random spots adds a large degree of luck to the match.
I like items too, but luck in a tournament is already prevelant enough with bracketing. The game itself should have as little luck related things going on as possible.
The Nintendog assist is top tier on cuteness alone.
I saw the update and got mad excited because I thought Samurai Goro was a new character.
Then I found out he’s in a pokeball shaped like a glass chodey penis.
I think Sakurai should really look towards getting all the rivals to the main characters in there before he starts putting in weirdo’s the fans want. Goro would have made too much sense as the main rival to one of the most popular characters.
The new characters so far have been pretty good, aside from ZSS, but she is fine because she will be so different.
If Diddy Kong is a new character before Little Mac, King K. Rool, Sonic, Mega Man, Ness’s bad guy, or another Pokemon I will be a sad panda. lol at whoever said he would be worthy addition. That would be like adding fucking Toad.
I’m sad that it just got confirmed that I can’t be a Hammer Brother.

lol at you guys discussing the balance issues of Smash Brothers. The game has never been “Balanced” at all. Look at “High-Level” Smash Bros play. It’s way worse then MvC 2. Total joke city.
I want as many characters as possible. There were what?, like 26ish in the last game? If there isn’t at least 35 I will be disappointed.
Also, if Lil Mac isn’t in the game, I will be sad as well.
Watch, in the next 2 weeks of updates we will see like 4 new “Assists” and each one will be completely heart breaking.
I can see it now, I’m going to click on Smash Bros Dojo, see MEGA MAN and then freak out. Only to read that he is an unusable assist.
Why is everybody thinking Diddy Kong will appear in this game??? He’s Rare’s intellectual property, which means he belongs to fucking MICROSOFT. He’ll never be in another Nintendo game.
And don’t give me that “Solid Snake” stuff. Those are completely different circumstances…

The whole time you guys were talking about Samurai Goro I thought, it was Goro from Mortal Komabt dressed up in Samurai Gear. I was like Oh shit thats fucking awesome, random but awesome none the less.
Then I checked the Smash Bros. site and saw that it was the dude from F-Zero.
Man I felt like such a noob.
