Also, keep an eye for the VH238H. It’s the same EVO monitor but with an LED screen. I found them at Fry’s a couple of months back for $139 each and bought myself a couple.
Hi all. This is a great thread. Just wondering, would anyone know anything about the Sony KDL32EX723BU 32-inch Widescreen Full HDTV? I am thinking of getting this but again, I am worried about the possible input lag.
You may want to do a little bit of research to better understand the differences between screen response times (GTG etc) and input latency before making your purchase. I’m not knowledgeable enough to explain the intricacies of it, but I can tell you that you will likely be disappointed if you make your purchases based solely on refresh rate/response time.
Check out this threadif you want to learn a little more. It’s a little dated, but a lot of the information is still good.
If you’re looking for a screen of that size, you should still be able to find a VH236H very reasonably. I think there’s even an LED variant, but I don’t know about its input lag (or lack thereof).
do you guys know how to force the Xbox to send the sound by another channel when using HDMI? Im needing that in order to do a tournament with speakerless monitors. I have that VGA / Component cable, but I really want to use the HDMI port for the graphics, If I have to use the VGA-Component cable I will have to buy a lot of speakers compatible with component audio or that optical audio cable stuff , it would cost me some money.
Get an output device that uses optical. With my 360 setup, I get video through HDMI and audio through optical, and the 360 automatically detects it and switches the audio output.
It would appear Anandtech started doing Input Lag testing using SMTT. I have no clue how accurate that system is but it’s at least a step in the right direction to figure out which of the new monitors may provide the best quality for gamers. The link below is a review of a 27" IPS monitor that is apparently pretty awful for fighting games/shooters but it also includes a chart with a few other options. It would seem the HP 27" IPS model is extremely good for fighting games though with a 3ms or so input lag which surprises the shit out of me (and makes me skeptical).
The VH236H isn’t lag free. It isn’t even the best monitor for input lag. It’s good but I find it odd how many people advertise it as “lag free” for some reason.
24" is just too small for me and I really really want 120hz for eye strain reasons (3D can suck it).
I don’t think people push it as the “best” monitor for input lag. However, it has below 1 frame of input lag, and it’s readily available at most major online retailers, and is also on sale very frequently (there was a deal yesterday bringing it down to $129 w/ rebate)
Maybe it’s not the best, and sure there are even arguably better choices, but once you go below 1 frame of input latency you’re pretty much in the clear anyway. The best players in the world use it as their monitor of choice, it’s used at most of the majors, etc. It’s a damn fine starting point if you’re looking for a cheap, reliable monitor in that price range that will get you used to an effectively-lagless setup.
I see it written all the time which is why I wrote what I wrote. I see it all over this forum, other forums and sites and even youtube pretty often. And I know it’s good, that’s why I said “it’s good”.
It’s just not lagless and for some reason it bothers me when people spread misinformation. Especially when there could be much better solutions out there in the near future (and there is already better now).
How do you get that significantly better than no full frames of lag? It’s effectively zero for all intents and purposes. Yes, the people that know better will call it “effectively lagless”, or say that it has “sub-1 frame of input latency”, or some other variant. If you’ve got time to worry about whether people actually know the difference between truly lag-free and sub-1 frame, you’re very fortunate, and I’m pretty envious.
At the end of the day, what’s more important than debating semantics is that it is *subjectively *the best choice for the vast majority of players. Cheap, reliable, available, decent size, less than a single frame of input latency, and good response time.
What’s awesome is that there are finally some other alternatives - the HP in the link you provided looks good. A little steep for my blood, but definitely looks like a winner.
