Earlier versions of SoR characters are unlockable. You have to complete the game maybe once or twice to get money for the shop and buy them in the ‘extras’ section of the shop (they all come in one package unlike the secret characters).
Edit: SixMachine beat me to it.
As far as the SOR remake site having exceeded bandwidth goes: one of the mods made a thread last week saying they were approaching their bandwidth limit this month due to there being more new members/activity because of the release of SoRR V5 (before sega came and shut it down) and that the site will be back up in May once they reach that limit.
Apparently alt+x will quit and give you a savestate…at the beginning of the level I believe. Really useful to know.
I beat it once on Normal, didn’t really do that well though. Took the second path, which seems to be SOR2 path. Now doing first path with Zan on Hard, actually playing worse than before even, but Zan is a good character still. I’m on the 1st path on the left, which I assume is SOR1 path, although they give you a choice to switch to SOR2 it seems for Stage 5.
I guess path 3 is SOR3. I wonder what that last path is. I guess each path has multiple routes though, so it’ll be awhile for me.
I’m still trying to figure out exactly how I want the setup. I like SOR2 camera and SOR1 jump for sure. SOR3 exceptions is probably worth it. For combo SOR2 probably is better? For pause delay I have it on SOR2 but I might switch that later on.
For the run options, I think everyone is better with them except probably SOR2 Axel and maybe SOR2 Max. I don’t have the secret characters, but I should be able to unlock SOR1 and SOR2 versions after this playthrough. I’ll slowly get around to the other characters and other options later on.
I play these solo, I wish it had online play. I’ll probably try the CPU friend for Very Hard upward. It took me a few years of SOR2 before I had good playthroughs on Mania, so if this game lasts me that long that’d be awesome. I like this game a lot, I’ll still play SOR2 sometimes probably too though. SOR1 is a good game too. I don’t really like 3 but I played that a bunch as well. I’ll probably mostly play SOR2 and this game.
I just dled SORR 5.0 and it looks interesting. I just need to figure out how to get it to see my ps2 controller…which works just fine for all my emus, but I’m having an issue with this application, for some reason.
D/Led this last week and have been playing the snot out of it. Mania in this version is not the insane shit storm it was in the original SoR2, but its still a good challenge. I beat the SoR2 path on Mania with CPU SoR2 Skate with one continue on Mr. X. I seriously would have paid good money for this (I was looking for a place to donate to the guys but couldn’t find it; they must have taken it down once they heard from Sega)
You want to set pause delay to either SOR3 or Combined. This decides the amount of hitstun/recovery for your moves, and it’s generally easier to combo things together with SOR3’s shorter delay setting. Combined should be used if SOR3 delay causes glitches or unfortunate side effects for the character you’re using (like some hits in a combo whiffing when they shouldn’t or something). Combined makes every character retain their settings from the game they originate from.
My preferred settings:
Damage Between Players: OFF, but this prevents you from using team attacks since you can’t grab each other.
Weapon Type: SOR2. Lets you swap and pick up other items easily and doesn’t limit your weapon use with an energy bar. Sucks that you can’t grab enemies without dropping them though.
Meter Type: Both. SOR3 type power gauge lets you use specials freely without a life penalty as long as you don’t spam them, and keeping the timer intact lets you receive a time bonus at the end of every stage and can force kill your CPU partner if he gets stuck on something somehow.
Combo Type: SOR2, though this is mostly preference. Since the first hit of each character’s attack series is usually the fastest, I think it’s usually nice to be able to spam them if needed.
Jump Type: SOR3. Being able to change the trajectory of a jump is a no-brainer, but I actually don’t like being able to turn around completely. There’s never an instance where I want to jump in one direction but not actually attack in that direction. SOR1 type might be better for some characters though.
Death Type: SOR in singleplayer, REMAKE in co-op. Remake prevents an enemy from falling out of your combo when your partner respawns.
Camera Type: Switched between these a bunch and rarely notice a difference.
SOR3 Exceptions: OFF. Easy grab infinites are nice, but not at the expense of being able to run diagonally.
Pause Delay: SOR3 usually, Combined with some characters.
Controls: Saturn USB pad with SOR3 6-button layout plus Police mapped to right trigger.
You might be hitting multiple buttons on the keyboard at once. This happens to me occasionally when I use keyboard for games like these, when you have like more than three or so buttons pressed at the same time it screws stuff up. I bet this game is killer on a gamepad/stick, but I’m too lazy to pull them out.
Anyways yeah this game is pretty much the definite version for me now. SOR2 is still great but I love the amount of choices SORR offers you to mix things up. I feel terrible that Sega shut them down, this is honestly worth a solid $20. Get some basic online multiplayer and it’s all set.
And yes finally someone agrees with me. DD2 on the nes is the best game in the series.
The only thing I dislike is that they got rid of the ability to run from side to side. Think of Sengoku 3. It was actually in V4 and I remember liking it quite a bit.
I think Double Dragon 2 was the best as well. The controls just take a lot of getting used to. Double Dragon 3 could’ve been the best if the inputs were better and you had more lives. But again, if you want a fan remake of that go look up Oben Bor and check out those Double Dragon games.
 You REALLY can’t tell?: Double Dragon 2, the cinema after you beat the second stage. The copter takes off after you beat the 2 ninja…leap, g-r-a-s-p
