Streets of Rage Remake (Updates in First Post)

I would say Shiva is top. Everything about him is good, except he doesn’t like the police (I think that’s his only weakness but he doesn’t need it). I would say he pretty much outdamages everyone else except max because his special hadouken does half a bar and when you add in the combo and throws, it’s pretty big damage. It also helps on enemies where comboing is annoying because they tend to be in the air a lot so you get that one hit, like the Jet guys. The Hadouken has more priority than their super man punch.

Max I don’t think is up there with the rest (but he’s still very damn good). Even though he has the best damage his mobility is pretty bad. The best way to move around is his dash attack and even then it’s not as easy as the faster characters who can sprint around and do damage relatively easier. His throws do great damage, but again his mobility makes his throw game harder to do than say Shiva or Rudra. But anyway, he’s probably just right under top imo. I would say he is best of the original characters.

I’ll reserve my judgments with Ash because i only did a quick run through some levels but not a whole playthrough yet with him.

the only thing really wrong about shiva is that his neutral special isn’t all that great. Overall he has some trouble getting masses of Galsias and what have you off of him. He’s like a really fast dhalsim or something. his stamina is good, his speed is great and his damage may seem average but he has so many more opportunities to get it that it hardly matters. He can literally hit ppl before their A.I. registers them being in attack range (because they fucking aren’t) and indicates that they should attack. There’s hardly any discussion to be had on top spot. He can get THREE hits out of his pummel throw before he’s forced to end it (standard is two fyi) and his jabs have so much advantage that he can start at max range poke and combo into his back slam RELIABLY.

Oh and he rapes some bosses.

i can’t find the game anywhere can someone shoot me a pm?

i also think Shiva’s top. The police thing is whatever, his jabs are straight nonsense for the reasons raishin and six state above. He can just interrupt stuff for free, where other characters have to dance around and dodge. Shit gets hilarious whenever you have to fight the wrestler guy (i think they call him Barbarian in this game? end boss of SoR2 stage 4) and you can just stand there and punch him to death with no fear in either version of shiva, because his roar + break combo move doesn’t hit far enough to even touch shiva’s range.

Of the original 6 i’m thinking Adam’s the best? Great range/dmg, his regular dash attack has multiple hits and covers a ton of ground. Not to mention him having a running special that appears to be fully invincible. i think it is at least? Have yet to ever be hit out of it.

There’s no way Ash is bad. He’s got the most damaging 3 star blitz move in the game, his 1 star gets him out of trouble, and next to Roo he runs the fastest. His damage is decent.

Elle is also pretty shity. Her reach is nice, but her move animations are LONG, drawn out, and don’t do much damage at all. Her blitz moves are all pretty weak, and have bad range. She’s fucking awesome with a knife, and she can use her “police call” everywhere, but that isn’t enough to make her good.

The worst has to be SOR3 Axel. He’d be good if is F+A special was invincible like it was in SOR3, but because it isn’t is basically useless. It takes him forever to complete, and has no range, so more times than not (espcially on harder modes) he’ll get knocked out of it by enemies. His damage output is pretty bad too.

I don’t think Adam is even the best of the original 6 because he’s got a lot of recovery and startup on his moves specifically the 3rd attack in his series. When dealing with crowds where he’s surrounded, boss characters who don’t get knocked upward or there are quick enemies you’ve often got to skip the uppercut or you’ll get tagged for it. His 3star blitz is nice, but it takes a little while for his 1 star to come out so you can get knocked out of it sometimes.

As for the best of the original 6 I’d give it to Skate. His biggest problem before was that he took a punch like tissue paper, but since damage has been toned down this isn’t such a problem anymore. Also his moves are better against the smarter faster AI in this game. Before moves that traveled a long distance didn’t really help a whole lot because the enemies would swarm you anyway. In this game you’ve got to be more aggressive chasing enemies down and this is where Skate’s really good. Also his 3 star move is one of the best in the game, not because it’s super damaging, but because it goes under a LOT of attacks. It’s really abusable because of this. The big SOR1 firebreathing fatties can’t even hit him during it. He owns them for free, and this goes for a good amount of other attacks.

My breakdown of tiers:
Top:
Shiva (both forms, SoR2 slightly stronger): Obvious reasons, jabs have ridiculous, obscene range. Basic combo ended with side special does huge damage. His dash attacks aren’t my favorite, but they work. His aerials are decent, but others are better. No police special.

Ash: Might seem like a strange choice, but he’s a beast. His 3 star dash attack is the best in the game, and can kill most standard enemies in one attack. His biggest drawback is the jumpback on his basic combo, but this is remedied by ending it with his short-dash side special. This does both more damage, and moves you forward to help prevent attacks from behind. His forward aerial is probably the best in the game, the attack has obscene range and his jumps are incredibly high. Mixing his dash attack and his aerial allowed me to beat Mr. X on hard without being hit by him once (I was hit by the goons a couple times). His special can be used on any stage as well, something Shiva and X lack.

Mr. X: All around solid. Great zoning with his neutral gun special. His dash attack is a great way to clear out enemies in front of you, and his jab combo is quick and effective. No police special, unfortunately.

High:
**Rudra: **A great choice, her police special can be used anywhere. Her shurikens can make her play keep away effectively, especially with bosses. Her basic combo is quick, but doesn’t do that much damage, and you don’t want to ending it with a neutral or side special doesn’t help much. Great speed and jumping as well. Dash attacks are good but not great.

Max: Damage machine. He can grapple any enemy in the game, and do over a bar of damage to bosses. Main weakness is being slow and open to attacks from quick annoying enemies.

Adam: Another damage machine with a bit more mobility. He doesn’t have the same output as max, but has more options. His dashing special is great, as are his standard dash attacks. Ending his basic combo with his side special has incredible damage output.

Mid:
**Sor2 Axel: **The best choice of the 3 Axels, his 3 star uppercut can do massive damage. Unfortunately it has some strange hitboxes, and requires the enemy to be a bit lower than you on the Y plane to do a full hit, which is a bit strange. His standard combos are good and he has a lot of weapon specials. Ending a standard combo with his side special will do massive damage, this is what sets him apart from the other Axels. A solid choice all around. Police special not being available on harder stages keeps him out of high.

**
Zan: ** Good range and a projectile dash special. His attacks aren’t super damaging, but he’s quick and his dash attacks provide good spacing. Using his range and speed can keep him out of harms way easily.

Blaze (All versions): Blaze is another good all around choice, decent at most things but not really great at anything. Her forward aerial is another good one, with a lot of range, which can be used to space. Combined with the range on her side special she has a good spacing game. I didn’t see a lot of differences between them, although SoR1’s basic combo was a good deal slower, but her side special did way more damage than the others.

SoR1/3 Axel: Similar to SoR2 Axel, but with lower damage side specials mean weaker combos.

Elle: Pretty bad, imo. I put her in mid mostly because she has a special she can use on all stages. In a game where the enemies love to dance around and try to get behind you, all her moves have tons of end lag. Her basic combo takes FOREVER, as does her electric whip side special. It has huge range sure, but then you’re just gonna get hit in the back. God forbid you try to combine the two. Her dash attack is quick and effective, but doesn’t do much damage. If you want crowd control, go Mr. X. Better range, better damage, and all his moves are twice as fast.

Roo: Had a tough time deciding if he or Elle were better. His attacks are very short range but quick, his basic combo can do some damage, especially when ended with his side special. He has decent range on his aerial and a good jump. His dash attacks are good but hard to aim. He’d be higher if his special was available all the time, why they gave him a cop car I don’t know. His neutral special is pretty bad though.

Low:
Skate: Like Roo, but with half the damage output.

SOR2 Skate is godlike. YJDK. It’s all about that neck throw and air down+B. Upgraded blitz attacks are bonkers too. I just wish it was a little easier to dash in and grab mid-combo in this game; seems a lot harder to do than it was in SOR2.

Elle is decent all-around but shines so much more in 2P. If you have somebody to cover her back when her lengthy moves whiff she’s great at locking entire crowds down. Knife proficiency is always good on the SOR1 route.

Unlock the SOR1+2 versions of characters at your first opportunity, because they’re usually better than the SOR3 counterparts. More damage and invincibility frames at the expense of some speed/recovery time, but you can just set the Pause Delay to SOR3 to mostly circumvent that drawback.

I’ve played through a complete run as 9 of the 12 characters (Mr. X, Roo, and Ash remain) and haven’t really found one I outright dislike.

After trying him, I can definitely say that SoR2 Skate is not bottom tier at all. He can’t even be low tier. His damage output is ridiculous, and the only thing that offsets it is his short range.

SoR2 Axel being mid is crazy talk, given he still has his infinite with SoR3/Remake pause delay.
So if he gets a clean hit on any enemy that can’t block mid combo, its GG. This includes R. Bear and Mr. X.

And Rudra’s really stupid with the “timer” meter style because it gives her FREE shurikens…

I just want… the sound track :o

Hi guys, I was one of the remixers for SORR. It’s a huge shame that Sega gave the project the go ahead and then demanded it’s removal after it was finally released.
Still i’m glad to see many of you grabbed the game while you had a chance, hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks for your work dude. This game is better than the majority of commercial games by a long shot.

I read on the SORR forums that the team was in negotiations with Sega…I don’t know why Sega decided to wait until now to pull the game.

Anyway, excellent job on the soundtrack! Thanks for dropping by.

At least Sega gave them the chance to release it. I’ve seen many a Sonic remakes that have gotten the proverbial axe before their release.

Apparently, Sega JUST released SoR2 in the iTunes store. The question is if the release was legitimately planned prior to SORR’s release, or thrown there as a scapegoat for them to force Bombergames to take down SORR>?

That would explain the game being taken down. Honestly, I can’t go back to vanilla SOR2 after playing SORR.

I’m playing right now, and I just witnessed Adam’s 3-star special. Totally imitating Balrog.
