lol Pre blocking what is this Guilty Gear?

hahhaa seriously…this dude really believes this is a thing.

0 people actually, Ken’s actor is the co-writer of the series, and probably one of the reasons Joey was so up for making this film, thinking about.

Akuma’s rival is Gouken, not Ryu.

Goutetsu was a balance between light and dark of anatsuken.

Gouken embraced the light side and developed it. He is a caring person who took an orphaned boy (Ryu) in as his own son. Took in Ken. Made friends (like Ken’s dad). Takes his art seriously but doesn’t really have much of an ego. Has a sense of humor and is very peaceful.

Akuma embraced the dark side and developed it. He cares for no one but himself, and is an egomaniac. He is an eternal loner, and angry always.

Ryu’s rival is Ken, not Akuma

Ryu is introverted, quiet, very respectful, a very serious student. A loner who works very hard to improve himself and making his techniques more efficient. He comes from humble beginnings.

Ken is extroverted, likes to talk, says what’s on his mind, is very social, a ladies man and later family man. Likes to be flashy in his techniques, and though he works hard relies on his natural talent more and has a bit of an ego. Comes from the wealthy and powerful Masters family.

I’d like to know where people get that Akuma is angry always. Because that is ridiculous. Akuma is a mature, focused, and a serious individual. The only time I’ve seen Akuma legit angry was the Udon comics when Ryu deliberately refused to blast him with a SNH powered Hadouken.

That’s debatable, but yeah, Akuma isn’t always angry, he’s just always a serious guy.

And you can have more than one rival. Depending on how you look at it, Ryu’s rival could be Ken, Akuma, Sagat, and even himself.

Ummm…don’t you need to be angry in order for the dark energy thingy to corrupt you?

no

You don’t have to be angry, you just have to be willing to obliterate your opponent whatever the cost which doesn’t seem so mature or even serious to me.

The interesting thing about the SNH is that it represents unhealthy obsession. Ryu doesn’t have it because he is more gifted, he has it because he is a less balanced individual than Ken. Ken’s personality makes him appear more immature and superficial than Ryu at first glance, but if you look closer he is the more balanced of the two. He avoids bottling things up inside by communicating his frustrations, he has a sense of individuality, he can and does form meaningful connections with people and he manages to juggle training and the desire to win, with a personal and a professional life. That’s why his role is to take care of Ryu and not the other way around. That’s also the reason he isn’t vulnerable to the SNH. Ryu has an outward appearance of calm, when he is anything but on the inside. An important aspect of the Japanese way of life that most westerners don’t know about is the fact that privacy wasn’t a part of their culture till relatively recently, they didn’t even have a word for it. That’s why they are used to presenting an outward appearance of calm, which affords them a form of psychological privacy like hiding in plain sight. So while it’s not immediately obvious, Ryu not only represents the impeccable work ethic and determination of the Japanese, but also the tendency those traits have to transform into obsession. Perfecting his martial art becomes his sole reason of being to the detriment of every other aspect of his life, which doesn’t do wonders for his psychological balance and mental health. In his quest for perfection he has retreated from society, he doesn’t have any other connection besides Ken to anchor him to humanity. That’s what makes him susceptible to the SNH. That, and the fact that Gouki is his dad of course :-P.

Ryu is aware of the above and that’s why he admires Ken. He has even called him the stronger of the two which has little to do with physical strength and everything to do with what he perceives as a strength of character. The interesting thing with all the retcons is that Capcom at some point decided to shift Ryu to a kind of less positive role model and Ken to a more positive one, which was clearly not their initial intent. It could be said that Ken lucked out, because while almost every other SF2 character was a stereotype, Guile had already taken the spot of the “American”, leaving the half-breed free to explore different directions, bridging two very unlike civilizations and ways of thinking. Ryu also became more interesting, a commentary to both the good and the bad of the Japanese tradition. Likewise, he came to be a more relateable character, since his quest of simply becoming the best martial artist transformed to a quest for balance and identity.

I think that SF Assassin’s Fist managed to portray the gist of it, and that’s why i enjoyed it so much. As far as FG stories go, Capcom has managed to craft an interesting origin story through the years, and it was a wise decision to start the series with it instead of World Warrior. To be perfectly honest, i find that most of the rest of the cannon is nowhere near as good and i can’t imagine how will Joey manage to make a coherent (and not fatally cheesy) story out of it. Best of luck to him though, i hope he proves me dead wrong.

Pretty damn awesome. I think my only complaint would be Akuma’s attitude/reason for wanting to fight Gouken, and the comment regarding killing his pups. I’d like to see his motivation mature into wanting to be the strongest and only desiring to fight those who could give him a challenge.
Gimme dat Blu-ray!

That was an important part of the story. Ansatsuken isn’t Gouki’s technique to shape, it has been passed from teacher to pupil for ages. The moment he decided to embrace the SNH was the moment he separated himself from humanity which includes sentiments like brotherly love. Ansatsuken teaches there can be only one master and that’s that. Tradition is the way that can’t be changed.

This. The existing canon already shows that Akuma isn’t the type to kill someone if they aren’t his equal or better in battle.

My only guess is that he was just lying to to get Gouken angry enough to tap into the SNH (which failed) and fighting him (which succeeded).

Part of the Ansatsuken philosophy is that one must use any means necessary to achieve one’s goals, i don’t see why you guys think Gouki was out of character. Fighting and killing Ken and Ryu would be deemed unworthy as an end to Gouki, but not as a mean to fight Gouken or punish him for attempting to deceive him about his status as a master of Ansatsuken. Plus he knows that it’s an effective threat so he might not even have to do it. So while Gouki wouldn’t hurt someone he perceives weak without reason, in this instance he has plenty of reason. Gouki may not be a stereotypical evil character but he is ruthless, and the series did a great job portraying that.

What SkiesOfAzel said in the 3 posts made above is bang on.

Also, nice to see Azel getting some love

Thanks!

My love for the Panzer Dragoon series knows no bounds. Watching a demo of PD Zwei (episode 3, the forest stage) inside a video game store for the first time did things to me :P. I immediately went back home, gathered my gear (a genesis and an snes, cartridges etc) inside a bag and went back to that store. I traded everything for a Saturn and that demo (the game hadn’t come out yet) and the rest is history. From the amazing artwork, to the music, to the setting and the story, PD created an atmosphere, a mood and an experience that only team Ico has managed to replicate, mainly with Shadow Of the Colossus. It’s one of those rare occasions when a game ceases to be entertainment and transcends to art. Aesthetics aside, Gash’s speech about security vs freedom near the end of Azel PD was one of the things that influenced me a lot during an impressionable age. I can’t think of another game that has managed to do that to me. The sad part is that in less than twenty years that speech has become a lot more relevant.

In the event ryu is akuma’s son…doesn’t it seem more likely akuma raped the bitch as opposed to having consensual sex?

No, the crazy old man is Ryu’s father.

The crazy old man is Goutetsu’s brother, thus Ryu’s grandpa. Since his true name might be Sheng Long, he is also Ryu’s uncle from an alternate future. You’ve heard this here first folks!

Alright so there is something that did bother me about this series…akuma’s look.

First off I applaud the effort but akuma needs to look more demonic…he’s far too human looking here.

Needs more of this:

Man what fuckin part of limited budget dont you understand exactly?
