No, it’s not. Ryu’s retconned story was that it was his defeat at Sagat’s hand that drove him to the brink. And the only tie between him and Gouki is that they take different paths to get up the same mountain. Ryu’s character is his determination. To even reject the SNH. Ryu has no family background which is a nice difference. Tying Ryu’s power to anything other than his determination to master himself is a strike against his own character. Same with Gouki. I hate when people do that in fictional works. Because characters like that just end up mowing people down and winning not on their own skill. Gouki is top predator in SF because he WORKED for it. Ryu gets respect because he works for it.
And Tekken’s family dynamic is not interesting because of the Devil Gene. Its interesting because Heihachi corrupted the Mishima bloodline on his own and created a cycle of “No regards for family in the pursuit of power. The curse of the Mishima bloodline.”
Ryu could be like a luke skywalker to akuma’s vader. It didn’t hurt lukes character to be his son nor made vaders own struggle less unique. Why couldn’t ryu still remain true to his character and be akuma’s son in the process…it isn’t like its impossible for him to forge his own identity.
As a sample lets say KOF rebooted and kyo and iori were long lost brothers…would it ruin or hurt their characters?
Because their fires are different, their principles are different, their clans/tribes are different!
How do you explain Iori Yagami being Kyo’s brother and managing to have an perfectly legit purple flame?
The principles on which both clans dislike each other is more than enough to give a reason those two characters shouldn’t be brotherly related in any sort of way.
Not EVERYTHING has to be related by blood. Family ties like “Oh your rival is actually your long lost brother” and “oh the big bad is actually your father” or “your love interest is actually your sister!” more often than not just make everything corny.
This was the best thing of SF I’ve ever seen outside of the game since the anime of it back in the early/mid 90’s (I think it was. The one where Bison kidnapped Ken, Chun fought Vega in her apartment. Yall know which one I’m talkin about hahah).
Loved the acting and the dialogue in it. Had a nice lil touch of comedy too. Too many things to mention. But a few small detailed parts I thought were great and/or funny was when they were first learning Hadoukens and Ken was doing the push ups. When he saw Ryu getting closer to making it, he told him “well done man”. I thought that was great because it showed the brotherly bond, and even though they’re rivals, they liked to see each other get better. Even if one was a little behind… Just like when Ken saw Ryu make that Hadouken in the woods in the middle of the night. There was no jealousy or nothing like that. His first reaction was “Throw it!” lol. Like whoa you made one!? Awesome! Throw it!
A funny part was the day after Ken got hit by Ryu’s Hadouken and Ryu said “How’s your arm?” Kens response, “Man, shut up. Throw a hadouken at you, see how you like it”. lol.
The old guy was comedy gold.
Akuma… Dam! lol. F’ng amazing.
Gouken. That dude NAILED that role man, holy crap! In episode 2 where he had Ryu and Ken face each other, dam yo, he wasn’t mad at them, but he was serious as a mutha, lol. That’s that shit Goutetsu instilled in him. Goutetsu was hardcore man. “When you hit, you aim to obliterate him!” Aint no knock him out or hurt him. When you hit him, you kill him… Epic tatsu by Ken in the dojo for the win. Ken “Went a lil crazy, sorry Ryu”. Gouken “Ken! You did well, don’t be sorry. He’ll thank you later”. Hit his ass like that again if he let’s you, basically, lol.
I have nothing bad to say about this, and the writing was excellent. It was amazing and I’m looking forward to owning this on DVD and even buying copies for friends and family. That’s great yall are selling DVD’s n blu rays. Yall did great. Even with not having near as much time as yall would have liked to film fight scenes n what not.
And I don’t mean to sound mean, but there’s not much choice and I apologize, hahah. Screw anybody that has dumb stuff to complain about and want to take magnifying glasses up to the screen like “Yup, look. A humming bird in the woods, right there in the corner. There’s no humming birds in Japan”. FOH!
I think chun li should be brothers with dictator. That way they can have the same dad and on Tuesday dictator kills him. Plus you can have the cop sister hunt down the criminal brother. Guile can be the overseas cousin and tells them to go home and be a family man so he can have his cousins to play with again.
Except that was something that was being worked on at least since the start of TESB’s production.
Ryu being related to Gouki is something that’s being tacked on despite prior material stating otherwise, as well as most other canon material not even doing anything close. Luke always had that thing about living up to his father’s legacy (before he discovered that he was Vader). Ryu had nothing of the sort, he was always about the path to self improvement and becoming a better fighter. Akuma has always been a sort of dark opposite to Ryu. Heading towards the same goal, but following different paths. A family connection does nothing for this - in fact, it actually ruins Gouki’s character since it now implies that he got where he was due to genetics, and not through his own hard work.
Saw a random comment about this series in another thread, then a friend of mine asked me if I had seen it. Told me it was live action, and I said “no thanks”. Ended up watching the first episode, and could not believe what I was seeing. Aside from the silliness of shouting “SHORYUKEN”, and the way it actually looks, what they did with this series was phenomenal. I also wonder how many people they had to audition before finding the perfect actor/fighter for Ken, because he was spot on.
Also, the actor that plays Gouki (prior to mastery) looks a bit like Tokido to me.
I don’t really know what kind of shows you’re referring to. Stuff like what Van Damme or Ong Bak movies had with the repeat-o-camera? Some of the martial arts movies where they seem to float up walls and such when jumping? I don’t watch modern anime either. Anyway, I thought the fireballs were on the verge of camp, but didn’t cross over, and the tastus actually looked almost possible. The shoryukens looked like super delayed wire-fu and just silly to me though.
Wire-fu in most modern action films/martial art films are very cheesy and the fake screams and grunts of most fight scenes verge on the side of camp. I couldn’t be the only 1 who thought the floating antics of something like crouching tiger looked a bit “wonky.”
On that note it isn’t always a bad thing to be cheesy…so long as you don’t look cheap.
episode 11 hadouken spelling fuck up…someones explanation for it. its interesting to read shit coming out of peoples asses…you’d think my laptop would be dirtier.
