Fighting gloves in a videogame have always been a pet peeve of mine. Covering only the back of the hand, what, are they doing backfists all day?
As much as there are issues with SFIVâs art (mostly in the execution, but not the actual concept behind it of making it look closer to a specific artistsâ artstyle), the gloves are one thing I liked that they did.
Heck, even Akimanâs art showâs them with proper knuckle protection.
EDIT: The other thing is that the gloves used in AF look loose, as if they could get grabbed. The ones in IV (and the official art for III, not in-game) covered the whole hand like gloves.
Mishimas have always had the most OP of hand/wrist protection
edit:image link was fucked
That said I liked the old mitts used in SF, protected the wrists/back of the hands while freein uo the knuckles/fingers, these guys are true karateka training up the striking surfaces is an artform ya know. I was kinda sad when later games they were basically just using mma gloves.
Ryu being Akumaâs kid is never really confirmed (outside of Generations, which is an awful SF OVA btw). There are hints here that leave it open to that interpretation, yet at the same time, we see that being able to use the SNH isnât genetic. Heck, the only practitioner who doesnât tap into it is Gouken.
Yes, thereâs no mention of Ryu even possibly being related to Akuma. Thereâs nothing that hints to SNH awakening being genetic.
People need to remember that Ryu being related to Akuma was something that was in Generations and not the mainline canon itself. While AF does borrow some ideas from Generations, the guys know enough than to add stuff that isnât canon in the main series.
I really hate that Generations started this nonsense with Gouki being Ryuâs father. Part of the appeal of Gouki is that his dedication to mastering his full potential is that in turn, he turned his back on the standard expectations of men i.e. chasing girls/sex/marriage/kids/family. It shows the strength of his resolve.
I like the idea of Akuma being Ryus father, brings a human factor to him. I think it would be kinda sad if he went through all this process just to become powerful enough to not get jobbed by Gen, and ofcourse everybody knows Gen is all about the pussy, motherfucker was a chinese James Bond.
Generations stank of bad fanfiction. So does this whole father business.
The thing about Akuma and Ryu was that the whole dichotomy of how they were opposites but heading towards the same goal. Both are aiming towards âenlightenment through combatâ, i.e. trying to achieve trying to be the best martial artist as a form of ascetism. The difference is that Gouki is going through via the SNH while Ryu is going through a different path.
Akuma constantly challenging Ryu, while partly because he wants worthy opponents, is also about proving the other patch wrong. If the only way for Ryu to become a worthy opponent is for him to tap into the SNH, then Akuma has won metaphorically speaking.
For me, the whole family bit sort of gets in the way of that, moving away from the classical Asian philosophies being discussed.
Iâm not saying you canât think thatâs how it plays out Iâm simply saying it isnât heavily implied at all. I personally donât like it for the reasons D3V mentioned, on of it being too fucking Star Wars for me, not to mention it adds nothing to their relationship/rivalry/clashing philosophies, which are the far more interesting aspects of the twoâs relationship. Honestly Akuma is Ryuâs real rival in every sense of the word. They are diametrically opposed to each other in almost every single way but as said aiming for the same goal, enlightenment through combat.
Akuma wasnt aiming for any enlightenment, ever. His only ambition is to find strong opponents and crush them. Depending on the source, he has left worthy opponents (in a critical condition/destracted mindset) leave without a fight.
To me personally, I rate him just a vain glorious bastard on a mega ego trip. He started off as an OP villian, but the more people try to give him backstory or whatever, its clear he is simply a maniac only out to slate his bloodlust.
Ryu on the other hand is all about the enlightenment, philosophizing crazy bullshit like to find his perfect self he needs to constantly train his hadouken. A noble selfless man who has spent a life time of kicking ass but wont admit he is strong, always getting stronger with each day. Some real Bruce Lee shit.
He has innate ability with the satsui no hado and at all times he has shown he is incredibly weak to its influence. All his Evil Ryu/Dark Ryu incarnations are a result of him taking a beatdown and letting the murderer in his sub consious take over.
For dramatic effect, this just cries out for that story he was Akumas son, the only person to fuck with Satsui no Hado and not lose was Gotetsu. No reason was given for Ryus natural infinity.
Now since Oni is canon, being in SF4, I think just as it went Gouki > Akuma > Oni, I think Ryu (if V ever comes out and its based after III) will probably become either full on Evil Ryu or meet him half way there, maybe he finally gets some of that Chun Li sex and he learns to ease up a bit.
Love to see the explanation for Ryus SnH shenanigans but in the meantime, bad fanfiction ftw
