Dunno. Either way that point’s moot for here since localization at times didn’t just simplify the translation.
Okay now Adon. First:
Final battle vs Sagat:
Adon: “You have taught me well, master. Now I have surpassed you!”
Sagat: “You are a mere shadow of my skill. It’s time you learn your place!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Sagat:
Adon: “Sagat!..you were an amazing master… But that’s until today! The defeated don’t qualify to call themselves emperor!!”
Sagat: “Very well…how far has your skill become eh…I’ll answer you with my emperor’s fist!”
Seriously? They both had to become verbal assholes to each other overseas? ‘…surpassed you!..mere shadow of my skill…’ Ugh. Next:
Ending:
Adon: “I am the strongest fighter ever. I crushed Sagat as I will crush any who opposes me! …!”
M. Bison: “You could be a valuable asset. Join me in taking over the world. Join me or die.”
Adon: “I care not for you or your drugs. Now out of my way drug lord!”
M. Bison: “No one speaks to me in such a tone.”
Adon: “Bison if you fight me, you die!”
And originally:
Adon: “I likely understood this to be. Who is the strongest man of Muay Thai? Also who indeed is the strongest in the world! …!”
Vega: “Adon I presume…your capacity, will be shown to me. To my ‘Shadoloo’, you would seem to be suitable as a key officer wouldn’t you?”
Adon: “‘Shadoloo’…? That narcotics business? For me such a place isn’t an atmosphere to go to. Outta my sight will ya!”
Vega: “Ho…that’s nice authority. Yet if it wasn’t such eh, fuhahaha!”
Adon: “…Gonna try it?!?”
And now Bison had to join the jerks club with his threatening ultimatums. Only a slightly better score than the pre-final battle exchange. Still ick with the emotional transitions.
Next time, Rose.
Now for Rose, first:
Final battle vs M. Bison:
Rose: “You’ve abused your powers for too long.”
M. Bison: “I knew you’d come sooner or later. Let’s finish this!”
Rose: “You do not deserve those gifts. The day of reckoning is here!”
M. Bison: “Stop making speeches and fight!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Vega:
Rose: “Vega! Using such a manner of ‘power’, stop already!!”
Vega: “You came as expected eh. For a kindred holder of the same power it’s an unavoidable fight.”
Rose: “Your evil power, you will surely see it confined. With this soul power!!”
Vega: “Hmph…nonsense!”
So Bison has to finish things with Rose overseas and accuses her of making speeches, and Rose claims Bison has gifts, along with heralding the ‘day of reckoning.’ Ick, average score. Next the ending:
M. Bison: “Arrghh!!”
Rose: “How do you like my Soul Power now?”
The Soul Power of Rose is the one thing that can defeat Bison’s Psycho Power. With her last bit of Soul Power Rose defeats Bison.
Rose: “I have done what I was sent to do. I feel as if I may have used up all…”
Exhausted and near death, Rose hears what sounds like a heartbeat. Was it Bison?
And originally:
Ending:
Vega: “Guaaaaaaaah!!”
Rose: “Vega…! This is the end!!”
Rose having bet her whole energy wrapped Vega’s body in ‘soul power’, the wicked ‘psycho power’ is confined. The dreadful demon being’s last…
Rose: “With this…the mission has ended… …Already even my…p, power is… …”
After the sublime fight is little silence. What did Rose likely hear? An ill feeling resounds, the demon being’s throbbing!
Now Rose has to turn arrogant about her power in English, and the supposed ‘fact’ about soul power and psycho power describing which one inevitably falls to the other, also an uncertainty needing to be stressed about Bison’s status that was obvious enough for Vega. Whatever, average score.
Next time, Sagat.
Now to Sagat, first:
Final battle vs Ryu:
Sagat: “You scarred me and sealed your fate. Now the scales will be balanced. You took my honor and I’ll destroy you!”
Ryu: “You just don’t get it, do you?”
Sagat: “Shut up! I won’t lose this time!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Ryu:
Sagat: “Ryu! This time you will not be pardoned! This scar of regret, as well as regret for the staining of the emperor’s name now, I clear away!!”
Ryu: “…Sagat… Why you lost, you still haven’t gotten ahold of it?”
Sagat: “Shut up! For the emperor there is no 2nd errorr!!”
These lines were actually pretty decent. Just a little paraphrasing and a little extra impersonal rudeness overseas, but otherwise a good conversion. Next for the ending:
Ending:
Sagat: “Revenge is a dish best served cold. But now that I have defeated Ryu why do I feel so empty? Why did he look at me with pity? Ryu is a man of honor. Perhaps he held back. Ryu would not do that. Would he? I must know if he fought with all his strength.”
M. Bison: “Sagat give up this foolish vendetta. You’ve won. Now Sagat if you wish to be feared, you must master Psycho Power.”
And originally:
Sagat: “To say at last that I refreshed myself with vindication of honor, what’s with this fruitlessness? His eyes…what was with those pity filled eyes!? A fist of hatred, to say that it doesn’t become serious eh… This scar’s pain still won’t leave. Until I truly win, against him!!”
Vega: “Sagat!..you want to fight that man one more time?? Then, come before me. I shall draw out your true power. With this ‘psycho power’!”
And back to the low scores. Sagat goes from contemplating the seriousness of fighting with hatred, to wondering if Ryu holds honor and held back. Then in English Bison aims to steer Sagat away from Ryu and towards psycho power instead of Vega tempting Sagat with a Ryu rematch by supplementing Sagat’s power with Vega’s. Total 180 flip there, too bad.
Next time, M. Bison.
Ready for Bison, first up:
Final battle vs Rose:
Rose: “Bison… You have misused your powers. It will no longer be tolerated.”
M. Bison: “They sent you to deal with me, did they? Now you’ll learn what real power is!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Rose:
Rose: “Vega… Your errors, can no longer be ignored! My mission is to block you…even psycho power shall be as far as here!!”
Vega: “Ho…there was still a user of soul power alive wasn’t there. I’ll show you. ‘Power’, such is the manner it’s used!!”
Really Bison? ‘They’ sent Rose? Who’s ‘they’? Sheesh. Next the ending:
M. Bison: “Soul Power is nothing to me. You wasted my time and your life. So pitiful.”
With Rose defeated Bison replays the battle in his mind over and over. Is there no one to stop him from ruling the world?
And originally:
Vega: “…You felt to pursue justice and such so-called idiotic things… While possessing the same power…how foolish!!”
With Rose now defeated, Vega has become, the lone transmitter of psycho power. Is the one person no more, who could crush Vega’s ambition of dyeing the world in darkness?
Really Bison? The very same power you have is nothing to you? What irony overseas. And also Vega goes from being a lone transmitter to Bison replaying battles battles in his mind over and over, and for what? Who can say how the Bison’s mind works…
Next time, Akuma.
Go for Akuma, first:
vs CPU Akuma:
Akuma: “I am power made flesh! Feel how weak you truly are!”
Originally:
vs CPU Gouki:
Gouki: “I am the one of the ultimate fist… You’re powerless and your body will realize it!”
Almost, if it wasn’t for the ‘power made flesh’ BS. Moving on:
Final battle vs M. Bison:
M. Bison: “Rarely have I seen such power! Why do you hesitate?”
Akuma: “Is it possible that you can defeat me? No! I will always triumph!”
Originally:
Vega: “… Fu…What’s wrong? You don’t come at me?? That tremendous ‘ki’, not intending to show it to me!”
Gouki: “…You’ll defeat me hmm…? I have become the one of the ultimate fist!!”
Again so close…and lastly:
Ending:
If evil has a name it is Akuma! Many have opposed this warrior. All have failed. Powerless against his great skill even Bison fears the mighty Akuma.
Akuma: “There is no one who can defeat me. My quest is at an end. Yet I am…empty…”
For some, it’s the path not the goal.
And originally:
Goutetsu…Gouken…and also Vega… Every formidable opponent Gouki has defeated. Before “satsui no hadou” they’ve been immersed at their wit’s end…
Gouki: “Am I not one who’s surpassed this world’s existences? Then there’s also no reason to exist in this world…”
The isolation of the man who’s obtained the extreme fist. Arrival to the strongest…is that a matter of demise??
And straying for a third time. “‘Evil’ has a name” indeed, overseas. Pitiful and knocks it down to an average score for the foreign labeling and mis-characterizing. Also Goutetsu, Gouken, and Vega had to lazily turn into ‘many’ a topping of Bison’s fear. Whatever.
Next time, Dan and the remainder of Street Fighter Alpha.
Okay finally the last of SFA with Dan:
Final battle vs Sagat:
Dan: “At last we meet, Sagat!”
Sagat: “Do I know you?”
Dan: “Years ago, you killed my father. Now it’s your turn!”
Sagat: “Ah…him. He cost me an eye. Now I will have revenge on his son!”
Originally:
Dan: “The one eye man…You’re Sagat aren’t you!”
Sagat: “What kind of person are you?”
Dan: “My father’s fooe! Fight with mee!!”
Sagat: “That man’s son eh…this eye’s grudge, still hasn’t been dispelled!!”
Almost spot on, if it wasn’t for Dan becoming somewhat more accusatory overseas. Then…
Ending:
Dan: “I made it, dad! Sagat is gone and you can rest. Nothing can touch me know!”
M. Bison: “Such confidence…”
Dan: “Who the heck are you?”
M. Bison: “My name is not important. Come with me and I’ll make you…the strongest in the world!”
Dan: “You’re a little late, pal. I’m already there!”
M. Bison: “When we meet again my young friend…you will regret your decision.”
And originally:
Dan: “Father…! At last I…beat up your foe!! Hyahoooh!”
Vega: “Good spirit isn’t it…”
Dan: “!? Who’re you!!”
Vega: “Who I am and the like, is trivial. Just that it’d be agreeable if you accompany me. Only with that you…will become how many times stronger!”
Dan: “What did you say? I’m already the what! strongest? Hyahoooh! I did it Father!”
Vega: “…Hmph, your lower limit of idiocy seems the strongest doesn’t it… The conceited likes of you with that degree of skill, is valueless to the extent of trash…”
And again close, yet Dan in English gloats more, while Bison for some reason promises more and threatens more. Anyway, now for the rest of the SFA features:
If CPU Akuma + CPU Dan is not found and no continues used:
Your skill has not gone unnoticed.
If CPU Gouki + CPU Dan is not found and no continues used:
As the sole splendid victor, you call out the one of the ultimate fist…
Why overseas you’re left hanging from Akuma’s notice is beyond me. Then:
If CPU Akuma is found and defeated:
Someone new has entered the fight!
If CPU Gouki is found and defeated:
One continuing in the same battle, a newly become fighter… The emperor hating man “Dan”, appears within the struggle.
Ditto with Dan… Next:
If Dan is found and defeated with no continues used:
The struggle never ends. Train for new challenges!
If Dan is found and defeated with no continues used:
The struggle is still not over… Don’t shirk off your training.
Finally a nearly spot-on conversion. And last but not least, the dramatic battle:
M. Bison: “Gentlemen, I’m M. Bison, lord of Shadaloo. You are worthy fighters and I have an offer. Join me or die. Decide now.”
Ken: “You must be joking. Shall we give him our answer?”
Ryu: “Yeah, I could use a laugh.”
And originally with unique win quotes from Ryu and Ken depending on who scores the last hit on Vega (wasn’t the case with Bison):
Vega: “Heheheh…these ones will do! I’ve found two first-class fighters at the same time. Come follow Lord Vega! I’ll make you the strongest fighters of ‘Shadoloo’!”
Ken: “What are you bastard!! Ryu, this guy’s in our way isn’t he!”
Ryu: “…Yeah! Let’s go Ken, we’ll beat him up!!”
And back to the petty improvising, Bison with his threats, Ken and Ryu with their scoffing. Average score for the overseas conversion.
Next time, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and starting with Ryu plus the win quote comparisons resumed.
On to Alpha 2. These will be 2 posts per character, first post for win quotes and rival battle lines, second post for final battle lines and ending. Plus one little extra to start:
all intruding battles with anyone vs CPU Shin Akuma:
anyone: “Who are you?!”
Akuma: “I am power made flesh! Feel how weak you truly are!”
Originally:
anyone vs CPU Shin Gouki:
anyone: “Who’re you!!”
Shin Gouki: “I am the one of the ultimate fist… You’re powerless and your body will realize it!”
Yeah, ‘power made flesh’ overseas and all that jazz. Anyways, beginning with Ryu:
“You fought well. I was honored.”
Probably drawn from:
“That was a good bout, fight me again!”
So Ryu goes from being excited to being proud. Meh, could be worse. Next:
“I look forward to our next battle.”
Likely converted from:
“I’ve taken this battle. Come whenever you’ll recapture it!”
Some loss of enthusiasm in English, again meh. Next:
“What’s wrong? Why do you hold back?”
Probably from:
“What’s wrong, show me your true power!”
No-complaints paraphrasing. And last quote:
“Now I’ll find a better challenge!”
Likely from:
“For me… I go to meet, the mightier ones!”
From more personal to more general, again not much for qualms. And:
Rival battle vs Sakura:
Sakura: “Ah ha! Here you are…don’t move!”
Ryu: “What do you want?”
Sakura: “I’ve always wanted to challenge you!”
Ryu: “Are you worthy? Show me your moves.”
Originally:
Sakura: “Pant, pant…finally caught up to you! Don’t go anywhere now!!”
Ryu: “…You? What business do you have with me?”
Sakura: “From the time I saw you before constantly, given what I saw I’ve been wanting to fight you! Will you be my opponent!?”
Ryu: “Ah, very well. From what I’ve noticed you seem strong. Come at me with all your ability!”
So some politeness lost in the translation, but other than Ryu’s last line the conversion’s quite intact. If only Ryu wasn’t somewhat puffy at the very end. Above average score.
Next time, the rest for Ryu.
And now the rest for A2 Ryu:
Final battle vs Akuma:
Akuma: “Well, we meet again!”
Ryu: “It’s been awhile Akuma. So, have you gotten any better?”
Akuma: “You tell me!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Gouki:
Gouki: “…! You’re, Gouken’s…!”
Ryu: “I’m thinking that I’ve encountered you from somewhere…you’re Master’s… But, this isn’t for private strife. As a sole fighter, I challenge you to a bout!”
Gouki: “…Hmph, boy! For my blood to boil, been a while hasn’t it!!”
Oy, major ball drop on this one. Akuma announces that they meet again? Ryu asking if Akuma’s ‘gotten any better’ ? All-around yuck. And:
Ending:
Akuma: “You possess the same power as I. When the ‘Evil Intent’ awakens within you, then you will know. All these past battles will seem like child’s play.”
Ryu: “W…what?! The island…it’s…it’s disappearing!?”
Akuma: “When you have learned to summon all your inner power, find me. Then we will truly learn who is more powerful.”
As Akuma’s island disappears… So does Akuma. Leaving behind the feeling of his evil presence.
Ryu: “AKUMA!!”
Left only with the sense of his untapped powers…Akuma’s words give Ryu yet another test. Ryu’s journey, to be a true warrior, is never ending.
And originally:
Gouki: “…Heheh…Ryu!, again you’re also a carrier of the same power as me… You know of the time you awoke to ‘satsui no hadou’… The battles until this were matters of farces…hmhmhmm!”
Ryu: “Wh…what did you say!? Uuaaah!? Th, the island’s crumbling…!?”
Gouki: [Ryu!..that strength, show me you can magnificently draw it out! At that time will be the time set for the true settlement between me and you…!]
Gouki’s island “Gokuentou” crumbled away. As faint fighting spirit remained, where did Gouki vanish
to…
Ryu: “…Gouki!”
To sleep in his own insides, the existence of an unknown power. Gouki’s words, have started to become a new trial to grant Ryu. Aiming for the true style of fighting Ryu’s journey never ends…
Somewhat better this time. Points deducted for changing ‘satsui no hadou’ into ‘evil intent’ overseas, as well as Akuma with his ‘evil’ presence rather than his fighting spirit, and neglecting to call Ryu by name.
Next time, Ken.
Okay now for Ken, first the win quotes:
“Don’t tell me you’re actually unconscious.”
Probably from:
“You awake already?”
A little more arrogance overseas, but anyways. Next:
“Now you see the difference between us!”
Likely from:
“This is, a dude of true ability discrepancy!”
Same idea, different perspective, next:
“Next time I won’t be so easy on you!”
Possibly rooted in:
“…Non-frankly a stuffed over-optimist eh! The next time come like you’re serious!!”
Still hardly any resemblance for that one. Next:
“You’re better than you look. Try harder.”
Maybe from:
“Regretted it didn’t you! Good luck next time on that rhythm!!”
Somewhat better than the previous quote, the English loses some degree of emotion. Anyways,
Rival battle vs Dan:
Dan: “Hey, Blondie, here’s a quarter. Get your own moves.”
Ken: “Who are you? Do you know the art of fighting?”
Dan: “Let’s get ready to rummble.”
Ken: “After you, ladies first!”
And originally:
Dan: “Oi, blond-hair scoundrel! Using seemingly imitated moves of mine what the blazes are you planning dude!?”
Ken: “What’s with you dude? Until now, I’d thought only Ryu would use the same moves as me and yet.”
Dan: “Don’t be bluffing! Not my moves, there’s not a fellow who can simply mimic them like such!”
Ken: “…Well, this is only your talking isn’t it. I’m with certainty stronger than you though!”
So…why the arcade machine references overseas and the lack of mentioning Ryu with respect to their arsenals, or Ken’s brief taunt in English? Average score.
Next time, the rest for Ken.
And now what remains for Ken:
Final battle vs Ryu:
Ken: “Where have you been?”
Ryu: “Why? Need some more schooling? …Like the lesson I gave Sagat?”
Ken: “Sure, let’s see your moves. Show and tell!”
Originally:
Final battle vs Ryu:
Ken: “Yo, been a while hasn’t it! I’d given up the drive to seek you out.”
Ryu: “…Ken, I…what had I been aiming for…? I defeated Sagat, with this fist…is this, what’s the proof of the true fighter??”
Ken: “Hey hey…always again with the bad habits?? Fight one round with me, that’ll open up your eyes!!”
What in the world?? Ken resorts to brief, lazy quips, and Ryu becomes a shallow douche to him? Blech, majorly poor score for overseas. Then:
Ending:
Ken: “Get up Ryu! Something’s bugging you. Your heart wasn’t in it this time. That battle with Sagat really messed with your head man. Stay focused! Remember, it’s nothing but the fight…I guess?! Here, you keep this. If you lose it again, this will remind you…of me and the fight.”
Ryu: “!!! Thanks, Ken. You helped me a lot!”
They left each other…going their separate ways. Promising to meet and fight again.
Ken: “I was lucky! He was stronger than I expected. I’ve got to pump up my training or I won’t be so lucky. Next time…he’ll be helping me up!”
And originally:
Ken: “C’mon, get up! Ryu! You’re not the always expectedly clumsy guy, are you… Fighting Sagat, I don’t know what you felt, we can’t help but search for the answers while we fight this way. Probably right! This guy, I entrust to ya. If you go astray again, seeing this you’ll remember… Myself and, this battle just now won’cha!”
Ryu: “… …Ken, sorry. Again I’ve been lent your help haven’t I!”
After that…the 2 of them parting, began to walk down each of their paths, promising to meet again and fight again…
Ken: “That guy…whether he’s getting strong or not! With me even idling I’ll be left behind soon won’t I. Well, at best on the contrary to not receive a preaching I should seem to do something in readiness for it eh!”
Only slightly better this time. Still Ken has to become goofy together with remaining supportive, though Ryu has to stay smart-alecky for whatever reason in English, and Ken has to mention some off-screen opponent he had to struggle against instead of staying focused on Ryu. Whatever.
Next time, Chun-Li.
Okay starting off Chun-Li, first the win quotes:
“I expected better.”
Probably derived from:
“Though you look like you’re strong, not much are you!”
More snide overseas. Next,
“I don’t have time for amateurs!”
Likely gleaned from:
“Annoying while this is from an amateur!”
More dismissive in English. Next,
“You don’t have the skill to beat me!”
Probably converted from:
“That’s right, it’s futile resistance! Isn’t it alright to understand that?”
Driving the point home with brevity, same ol’ same ol’. And lastly,
“If you’re going to fight, fight for real.”
Possibly derived from:
“Your nature seems alright but, no strategy for you is there.”
Ditto more or less. On to her rival battle:
Gen: “Young one, what is it you seek?”
Chun-Li: “It does not matter, you can’t help.”
Gen: “I could teach you.”
Chun-Li: “Out of my way, I’m looking for someone.”
Originally:
Gen: “Ho…that’s a penetrating eye. Lass, where did you learn those moves?”
Chun Li: “These are lessons taken from my father! …Who, might you be?”
Gen: “My name and the like, is trivial. Hmhmhm…that we’d encounter each other with those moves in such a place no…”
Chun Li: “…If you want to fight how about you come right out and say it? Fine, come at me!”
So Gen becomes more caring overseas, and Chun-Li was made more distant and cold in English for whatever reason. Below average score, too bad.
Next time, the rest for Chun-Li.
And the rest for Chun-Li:
Final battle vs M. Bison:
Chun-Li: “Evil in the flesh, Lord Bison. What happened to my father? What have you done with him? You know something!”
M. Bison: “Don’t ask questions if you aren’t prepared for the answers.”
Originally:
Final battle vs Vega:
Chun Li: “You huh? The ringleader of all, ‘Shadoloo’s’ boss…Vega! Your organization had been pursuing my father…and then his figure vanished! Now, you will tell me everything!!”
Vega: “Fuhfuh…how courageous isn’t it. In just the right boresome place, you’ll entertain me with courtesy!”
Why Chun-Li became more accusatory and less emotional while Bison turned more grim overseas is beyond me. Average score. Next the ending:
M. Bison: “Chun Li! You surprised me. Next time I’ll use both hands. Unfortunately, I have no time for these petty games.”
Chun-Li: “Where do you think you are going?”
M. Bison: “Don’t worry child, we will meet again. I hope you’ll amuse me then. More than your father did!! Ha ha ha ha!!”
Chun-Li: “…My father? Bison! It was you! You killed my father!”
…Bison disappeared to the underworld. A few days later…at the China Branch Interpol Headquarters…
Boss 1: “Chun Li, I have appointed you as Special Investigator of Shadaloo.”
Boss 2: “Revenge your father’s death with us!”
Chun-Li: “I’ll get you Bison! Next time we meet, we’ll settle it! …This is the last time I cry. Don’t worry…Father!”
And originally:
Vega: “Fuhahahaha! You entertained me very well! Unfortunate but, the accompanying sideshow goes as far as here.”
Chun Li: “Vega!! You’re not getting away!!”
Vega: “There are no plans to get away. We’ll likely come to meet again. At that time, I’ll seemingly hope you’ll entertain me more than your father!! Fuhahahahahaah!!..”
Chun Li: “…My father…!? My father, never…!!”
After that, Vega once again vanished into the undersurface world…
Several days later…Interpol China branch office.
Police chief: “Detective Chun Li…in opposing Shadoloo I appoint you to the special investigations division. In regrets for your father, such will refresh us all together won’t it?”
Chun Li: “Just you wait, Vega. When next we meet, will be the set time of the true settlement!! For me to cry, this is the last. Don’t worry…Father!”
Better this time, though Chun-Li points the finger at Bison far more in English than she does at Vega in Japanese, Bison belittles her more than Vega, and for some reason she responds to two superiors instead of one. Odd but still slightly above average score for conversion.
Next time, Sagat.
Okay now Sagat, win quotes:
“Now who is the strongest?”
No original quote really took any hints from this one. Perhaps the closest was:
“Everyone with the exception of me, professing to be the world’s best is unforgiven!”
So barely above a goose egg score. Next:
“It will take more than you to best me!”
Ditto more or less. Another was:
“You’ll beat me you say? Don’t screw with me!”
Another near zero. Next:
“Do not challenge what you cannot defeat!”
A little from this one perhaps:
“With that frail fist, you face toward the emperor, how foolish…!”
Still a low, low score. And next:
“Accept your weakness. Never return here!”
About the only one in the neighborhood:
“The defeated retire!!”
Not good track record for win quotes needless to say. Then:
Rival battle vs Adon:
Adon: “How could you lose to Ryu? You deserve to die!”
Sagat: “It’s time I teach you respect. It’s your lucky day. You will share Ryu’s fate.”
And originally:
Adon: “Appeared haven’t you! You blasted disgrace to Muay Thai! I was constantly seeking you out. Therefore I’ll send you to hell with this hand won’t I!”
Sagat: “Hmph! Exceedingly conceited! Just fine…I’ve worked out a move for the sake of vengeance on Ryu, I shall test it first on you!”
So Adon in English has to let out a question of disbelief and knows who Ryu is, and Sagat overseas needs to coax and threaten Adon with Ryu’s ‘inevitable’ fate. Average score.
Next time, the rest of Sagat.
And what’s left for Sagat:
Final battle vs Ryu:
Sagat: “Ryu, now is the time for revenge.”
Ryu: “You still haven’t recovered from our last duel.”
Sagat: “I have something new for you. This time you’ll be scarred.”
Originally:
Sagat: “Finally I’ve found you…Ryu! I’ve waited for this day!”
Ryu: “Sagat!? That body, what in the…”
Sagat: “That day the humiliation I received from you, that will repay double with the move I’ve worked out… ‘Tiger blow’!! Your chest also, I’ll carve into with my raage!!”
So why did they both become so blunt overseas? ‘now is the time for revenge,’ ‘still haven’t recovered from our last duel,’ so flat and unemotional, average score. Then:
Ending:
Sagat: “I’ve defeated Ryu! I am the Champion! I’ve gotten my revenge. But, it seems like a hollow victory. Champion, bah! I know now… That’s why Ryu just stared at me. He knew, he just didn’t say.”
M. Bison: “What’s the matter, Sagat?”
Sagat: “I’m getting off here. I have something I’ve got to do! Later, you must tell me about your ‘Psycho-Power.’”
M. Bison: “O.K. Go now. You are on my path. Come back to me when you are stronger.”
Leaving Bison, Sagat decides to train alone.
Sagat: “Damn! I’m going to need a more powerful move than the Tiger Blow next time! But, I must find it on my own!”
Sagat’s mind is clear…as he searches for his own inner strength to be a True Champion!"
And originally:
Sagat: “…That day, I defeated Ryu and took back the title of ‘emperor’… Humiliation was surely doubly repaid. …Yet what was with that emptiness? ‘Emperor’…? That’s it…! The guy’s eye from that time…that’s what it was eh!”
Vega: “What’s the matter, Sagat?”
Sagat: “…Sorry, let me off here. For me, there’s a matter left undone. The discussion of your so-called ‘psycho power’, give it to me afterwards…!”
Vega: “Fu…very well. No helping it on such is there. Discussion mustn’t be for third raters requesting for very easy help.”
Sagat having separated from Vega’s side, does continue training alone.
Sagat: “Uooooh! A move surpassing the tiger blow…! Acquire a move to outdo Ryu…!! This, with just my power!!”
Now, there’s no cloudiness in Sagat’s heart. Just a very little, eye pupil desiring true “strength”…The figure of an earnest fighter, is here!
Back to the ‘Champion’ with Sagat in English. And he wants to learn about psycho power. Also Bison believes Sagat’s on his path and cares about when he’ll get stronger. And finally Sagat gets to needlessly curse overseas rather than just wonder and struggle during his training, another average score.
Next time, Adon.
Ready for Adon, first the win quotes:
“I am a Muay Thai master. You are sucking gravel.”
Probably referenced from:
“Your figure is to grovel. I had seen it from before the fight.”
Half on, half off. Overseas Adon naturally gloats more. Next.
“My legend starts now!”
Likely from:
Look steadily! I am Muay Thai’s new god!"
Oddly his cockiness was toned down a smidge in English. Next.
“Don’t worry. It’s all over.”
Probably from:
“Don’t panic, before long you’ll entertain me!”
Another half-on half-off transition. Why he’d care for the end of his opponent’s suffering overseas is beyond me. And finally,
“Is that the best you can do?”
This one never really converted. The original quote most closely resembling was:
“Still go at it? Seems you want to drown in quite a sea of blood don’t you.”
Another tone-down, this was a major one hiding Adon’s thirst for carnage. Next the rival battle exchanges:
Rival battle vs M. Bison:
M. Bison: “You have earned a place in Shadaloo.”
Adon: “Who are you?”
M. Bison: “I’m Bison, Lord of Shadaloo. I’m the best there is!”
Adon: “The best there was, is more like it.”
And originally:
Vega: “Pretty good skills…and nothing better than that expression!”
Adon: “!? What’s, with you?”
Vega: “My name is Vega. The one standing at every peak. Adon!, come to ‘Shadoloo’!!”
Adon: “Peak you say…? Don’t be half asleep! Only one is at the peak of the fighting world, namely me!!”
So overseas Adon strangely acknowledges that Bison at least ‘had’ a place among the best, and Bison has to be more illustrious with his invitation for Adon. Above average to average for conversion purposes I suppose, given that Adon’s not as rudely emotional as he is in Japanese.
Next time, the rest of Adon.
And the rest for Adon:
Final battle vs Sagat:
Adon: “Aah, Sagat! Did you think you could escape from me? Now that I found you, you must be killed.”
Sagat: “In your dreams, warrior!”
Adon: “My dreams are your nightmares.”
Originally:
Adon: “You were here eh, Sagat! Running around trying to escape everyday, I’m sure you’re wretched right…? At least I’ll dismiss you as I was your number one student!”
Sagat: “Rising against the emperor, Adon? Blasted amateur…understand with your body!”
Adon: “Still you blabber about the likes of emperor?! Then you’ll realize it with your body just fine, to become a complete defeat!!”
Decent conversion actually, although each of Sagat’s and Adon’s last lines turned into painfully brief bickering quips. Next:
Ending:
Adon: Sagat, you’re through! Your Muay Thai is old and useless. If you try me again…I’ll crush you! YEAHHH!"
Out with the old. In with the new. Months later at a Muay Thai arena…10 minutes before the main event with the champion Adon.
Disciple: “Master Adon! There is a problem! Your challenger was killed by a mysterious warrior moments ago!”
Adon: “Who? What did he look like?”
Disciple: “Dressed in black with red hair. He didn’t look…he wasn’t…”
Adon: “I know him. He uses the same power Ryu used to defeat Sagat. I must annihilate him now to prove…Adon of Muay Thai is the mightiest champion of THIS world!”
And originally:
Adon: “Sagat!! Your period is completely finished! That uncouth pseudo-Muay Thai, you’ve already shown to me once… I crush it into tiny fraagments!! Teyaaaaaaaah!!”
The myth crumbled away. Accordingly the birth of a new myth…
After numerous months- Runpini Stadium.
10 minutes before the sovereign Adon’s main event.
Attendant: “L, Lord Adon! There’s trouble!! The expected athlete to fight Lord Adon now, was defeated by a mysterious intruder…”
Adon: “Ho…how was the guy?”
Attendant: “With a jet-black gi, it’s a red haired man.”
Adon: “! …Hmph, if it’s that one then I know. A guy who uses the same techniques as Ryu, the man who defeated Sagat. Interesting! Now at this place I’ll completely crush that one, Adon, will prove that Muay Thai is the strongest!”
Again not a bad transition overseas, minus the more descriptive setting in Japanese, and the misleading swap of ‘techniques’ for ‘power.’ Also Adon’s opponent going from defeated to killed, and Adon’s disciple’s additional itching to stutter that Akuma’s beyond an ordinary warrior. Average to slightly above average score for the English.
Next time, Birdie.
Continuing now with Birdie, his win quotes:
“It’s good to be back!”
No derivation from any original quote whatsoever. The first one was:
“Go back home won’cha, mister!!” (or “boy!!” or “little missy!!”)
Zero score. Next:
“Still the best!”
Probably hinted from:
“I’m No. 1!!”
Slight more gloat in English. Next:
“What made you think you could beat me?”
Another one with hardly any derivation. Possibly the most similar was:
“Is that a punch? Even a cat dodges that!!”
Another zero. Next:
“Show some respect and maybe you keep breathing.”
Likely took any hints from:
“You’d probably do well to listen! Use your head will ya!”
Meh, slightly above a zero that time. Then:
Rival battle vs Dhalsim:
Dhalsim: “Retreat and make peace with your spirit.”
Birdie: “Yea, okay Yoga-boy. I’ll kick you so hard you’ll dirty your diaper!”
Dhalsim: “May you fight better in your next life.”
And originally:
Dhalsim: “Thou, repent! That pair of arms is not for the sake of shaking people in violence.”
Birdie: “What, bastard? You’ve gotta strange cool manner going! Unfortunately I don’t believe in a god. Better draw back monk!”
Dhalsim: “Pitiful sinner (tsumibito)!.. That impure soul, I’ll purify through my yoga’s inner mysteries!”
So overseas Dhalsim for whatever reason has to keep focusing his brief lines on fighting, and Birdie has to spout some belittling trash talk that makes him sound like a country bumpkin besides insulting. Average score and that’s probably being generous.
Next time, the rest for Birdie.
And now the rest of Birdie:
Final battle vs M. Bison:
Birdie: “I hear you’re the boss…make me an offer.”
M. Bison: “I’ll offer to destroy you.”
Birdie: “Make me a better offer.”
M. Bison: “All right, if you live, you’re in.”
Originally:
Birdie: “Yo! ‘Shadoloo’s’ understood godfather, is you right? How 'bout it, will you hire me?”
Vega: “I have no interest in anything but the strong. That body, probably not for showing off is it.”
Birdie: “Damn straight, you scoundrel! From now I’ll show you my skills!”
Vega: “Heheheh, a man of fine authority. Very well, you’ll be an opponent!”
So why do both Birdie and Bison have to be jerks to each other overseas? Birdie demanding and Bison threatening…barely average score. Then,
Ending:
Birdie: “I am the BEST! What do you 'ave to say for yourself Bison?”
M. Bison: “You are strong. O.K.! I’ll accept you as a member of Shadaloo.”
Birdie: “YES! With my help you can rule anything your 'eart desires!”
Shadaloo Command Center. Data room.
Birdie: “YEAH!! Bison, you lunatic! Now I know your hidden agenda. You won’t exploit me! I’m outta 'ere! Watch your back, mate.”
And originally:
Birdie: “How’s it! This is my true ability!!!”
Vega: “I see…certainly power that may perhaps endure Lord Vega. Very well. I usher you in to ‘Shadoloo’.”
Birdie: “I did it! Heheh, a union with me and world conquest is at whatever your so-called leisure!”
Shadoloo base: data room.
Birdie: “Oohryaaaaaaah!! Heh…Vega!! Your schemes are unraveling. You likely plan to cleverly utilize me, that I’ll not allow. Seemingly catching you off guard by setting traps, at best you should be careful of the matter shouldn’t ya!”
Amazingly better, this ending’s English conversion gets above average for scores.
Next time, Guy.
Ready for Guy, first his win quotes:
“You can’t beat what you can’t touch!”
What a put-down and with no reference whatsoever. One of his originals that can be seen as appropriate:
“The fear of your own conceit…”
Next:
“You are so outclassed.”
Another zero. Another original:
“The way to prevail is with a fierce god’s assault!”
Next:
“Don’t worry, everyone loses to me!”
Ditto for a mostly zero. Possibly the only quote with any shade of resemblance:
“Don’t take it the wrong way… This is also for bushinryu’s sake!”
And lastly:
“Shouldn’t you be crawling to a hospital about now?”
Pattern of zeroes seen yet? One more original quote:
“The battle was decided, you went that far!”
Enough with the sorry overseas win quote transitions. Now:
Rival battle vs Rose:
Rose: “I see there is a hole in your mind.”
Guy: “There is nothing in my mind.”
Rose: “So strong, yet so stupid.”
Guy: “Can’t you see, this will be your final fight.”
And originally:
Rose: “You’re, strong aren’t you. But, I sense perplexion in your heart…”
Guy: “What, might you be? Perplexion and the like in my heart…doesn’t even exist!”
Rose: “Oh?, I wonder about that…how about you show me it to be sure with that fist?”
Guy: “I don’t like needless disputes, not only here but for bushinryu! Now, collapse not!”
Seriously English? ‘Final fight’ ? Both Rose and Guy tear each other down overseas, sorry excuse for a conversion netting barely above a zero score.
Next time, the rest for Guy.
