Where’s the rest of your matchessss. The only one with you was you getting bodied by keepaway Dante somewhat. I know you have stuff to report on VJoe doncha?
The pointing thing may have been a taunt. Do you remember what you were doing at the time?
Thors best jumping attack outta airdash is j.E. J.Cxxj.E and j.CxxMighty strike are good too where applicable. Mighty Strike is chargeable, but I’m not sure if charging it grants it any additional properties. Its dissappointing to find out his vertical air Mighty Strike goes DOWN and not up, but I can see some uses for it. I’d also like to know what that yellow glow move is.
Heh yea I was wondering the same thing about She Hulk the other day–whether I could DHC into her lvl 3 super grab on block. I completely forgot about using that setup with Thor as well since I tend to forget that he even has a super grab at all. Good to know that it can’t be jumped at close range, but would that make DHCing into super grab (on block) be a free setup? Could the opponent escape the grab at all? That would be stupidly good.
I’m still trying to think of a good character for anti projectile assists, since I plan on mainly playing the brawler types (She Hulk, Spencer, Thor, Hulk) and that Dante/Deadpool shit looks annoying. I imagine it’s only going to get worse once people get in the lab. The best I can think of is Dorm’s pillar assist, which pops up under the character from across the screen. I had no intention of playing Dorm, but he may very well end up being “Doom rocks” for brawlers.
I’m guessing the finger point move is either a counter or maybe some kind of temporary buff (meter/damage/etc)?
Thanks for all the info dude. It’s some of the best yet.
I almost forgot about the Mighty Finger-Point. I also think it’s a reversal, but a confirmation would be great.
And I’m so used to Super Grabs blowing so hard in the VS series, I didn’t even think of possible DHC setups into them in MvC3. In theory, setups/gimmicks could actually be pretty cool. I’m thinking of pairing up Wolvie with Thor, and a possible setup would be to do a really bad blockstring (like c.A, c.A), cancel it into Berserker Rage, then DHC into Thor Super Grab. If I’m right, they won’t be in blockstun at all while Wolvie is powering up, and Thor’s Super Grab could catch them while they are still instinctively holding down-back to block.
And whiffed supers setups would be point-blank Fatal Claw, Shinkuu Hadoken straight up, angled Proton Cannon. But the power-up supers might be better just because you’d be tagging out the character for now-buffed assists.
Personally, I think brawlers need more of a general anti-keepaway assist, rather than just anti-projectile. And there seems to be a few that should be helpful against that.
Yea right on. I should specify that I tend to lump keep away and projectiles in the same group, heh. To me the biggest gaps in Thor’s game will be keep away and anti air, so he’ll need to have two assist characters that cover that–especially if you run him on point.
I’m ridiculously stubborn with the character archetypes that I like, so I’m always trying to think up semi-viable teams with the brawler types. I think Thor/Hulk/xx (with xx being Dorm, Doom, Viper, etc) could still be decent, since Hulk can provide Thor with much needed anti air in the form of his vertical Gamma Charge–which reportedly has super armor. The second character (e.g. Dorm) would be able to use portal/pillar to interrupt the full screen projectiles spam.
Hrrrmmmm I’m starting to think that Thor/Hulk/Dorm could have all of their weaknesses covered no matter who you put on point. Hulk’s AA Gamma Charge will benefit Thor and Dorm. Dorm’s portal/pillar will benefit both the brawlers. The big question for me is what assist to put on Thor. Mighty Smash is ridiculously tempting, but will Hulk need AA when he gets rushed down? His normal, non-assist version of Gamma Charge is reported to not have any super armor so I’m not sure how good it will be. If it sucks then I’d consider putting Thor on his Mighty Strike assist, which travels up-forward and should presumably work for AA duty.
For anyone who has played or in the know:
Is it confirmed that Thor’s Mighty Spark projectile has alot of “health”–meaning that it will tend to beat other projectiles if they collide? Will it beat Deadpool’s bullets?
I think Thor will have an easier time against keepaway with air dash, Strike, and Mighty Spark A. He probably won’t be able to home in on a runaway Trish or Storm very easy or anything, but he doesn’t look like he’ll be as bad off as Hulk or Chris.
Maybe Haggar will have a really good anti-keepaway assist, like he throws a pipe up into the air or something lol. But I think it might be best to keep Thor on Smash. It seems like his best assist, offensive and defensive. The angle is anti-air-ish anyway, and it leads to combos on hit, which is huge. Strike is a bit slow on assist, too.
Yeah I’m also holding out hope for Spencer’s ranged grab assist (assuming he’ll have it). I’m very interested in how it will react against projectiles. If it goes through projectiles and grabs the opponent then my bralwer trifecta teams will be complete.
For Thor I still wanna mess around with his other assists. I know considering anything other than Mighty Smash is turning out to be sacrilege, but I think his projectile may end up being decent against canceling/defeating other projectiles if the reports about it are true.
Off topic, but E.C. man how long you been around the FG communities? I remember seeing you from waaaaaaaaaaayyyyy back on the old Tekken message boards. For some reason I can still remember the ridiculousness on the Tekken Tag Tournament official message board, where Chinaman used to talk shit on East Coast players saying “EC sucks!” and you’d be like “No I don’t!!!” I dunno how/why I still remember that after all these years.
That would be quite awesome. Still, not gonna be that much help for Hulk when Storm starts flying away again. The bright side to runaway Storm is that there’ll be no more “Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!” I have to hear that in tourneys when I’m not even playing the game. That makes me want to punch children.
I’m still not liking how high his projectile is. It might be better for a runaway point character. I might use it if I pick up MODOK or Storm.
LOL. ol’ tekkentagtournament.com. Back before Jarney became WCMaxi, you could break the entire forum with a simple bad HTML tag, trolling/flaming was an artform, and I started the whole “Get Laid” meme that took off on Shinra Online. Good times.
I’ve been around since, um… I dunno. Tekken.net I think? Maybe I joined Soulcalibur.com first and then I joined Tekken.net and Electric Cancel a little afterwards. I know it was around '98 or '99. Before SRK and TZ existed yet, heh.
Thor was really fun when I got to have a second go with him at the Capcom Food Fight thing. I’m looking forward to playing the complete char on release.
It was difficult to get through keep away with Thor since his dashes are so slow and short, but when I added the Hulk gamma wave assist for cover I was able to get through most anything. His ground dash is very short and slow. Wave dashing doesn’t seem to speed it up much.
8-way air dash isn’t very good for closing space on runaways. He has a little lofty dip at the end of an air dash the really hangs him up. You have to cancel it with a normal to keep your dash momentum going, but it’s very risky to leave yourself open like that against Dormammu. I completely forgot to try fly mode.
His tri jumps were actually really great use of his dash and I really liked rushing down with him. It’s not the fastest, but it’s way more than Gief ever got in MvC2. Also, 8-way dash into command grab is beautiful once you break down your opponent’s tendencies and know how they’ll try to run away.
The whole time I was trying to find the right air combo to reset my opponent with his command grab and then possibly relaunch into an infinite, since you can combo after his power bombs, but I never got it down. I’m certain it can be done, but it will probably take practice mode in Feb. If anyone gets a chance to play Thor at other fight clubs, see what you can come up with. It’s probably a timing thing.
I stuck with mighty smash for his assist, and it proved Thor’s worth with that alone. If it connected, you had all the time in the world to follow up with a combo, and it’s only 2 hits so it doesn’t wear away at hit stun or damage mitigation. If they blocked the initial hit, you could easily go for a cross or mixup while Thor was on his way back down for the second strike. It really helped my Wolverine on point using this. Block string, Mighty smash assist, QCB + P to do wolverines auto cross up to time it with Thor on the way back down was really fun.
The hyper grab super was really good and it had very little recovery. One match I was surprised when Deadpool did a standing short and interrupted my super. I don’t know if he punched before or after the ‘flash,’ but I was definitely interrupted in throw range, so he’s not invulnerable.
One last bit of speculation is that after the hyper grab super opponents seemed to stay on their back longer than I remember in videos. I couldn’t land it in my last few matches to try to start an OTG with Hulk’s gamma wave assist, but some optimistic food for thought if anyone gets a chance to try it. That would be a hell of a reset if you could turn his throw super into a combo. Then again, Royal Flush says you can DHC from throw super, so Thor grab DHC to Chun legs super may be devastating enough… wow!
Anyway, no real hard facts for you, but those were my impressions. Hope they are helpful!
Whoah whoah whoah. That was you??? Were you using a different name, cause I thought the dude’s screen name began with an “S” or something. Those were funny times. People got sssooooooooooo mad. I was around on the old soulcalibur.com site. Hahaha I remember jarney@namco.com Good times. I remember when that message board got broken a few times by someone who’s handled was Incredible Hulk, and created dozens of threads with “HULK SMASH!” I found out years later that it was someone from my local gaming group.
I sometimes forget where the hell I used to browse before Zaibatsu came around. I definitely remember Tekken.net. Didn’t that get redesigned and become Zaibatsu? I also remember posting alot on Drumdude’s Tekken message board. It was pretty activate during the early arcade days of TTT. Lot’s of old school Cali people posted there as well like Shauno, QDogg, etc. I never got into the Fighters.net forums, but I used to browse them alot. For some reason I still remember the drama when The Faceless Master made a Tekken 3 Nina FAQ, and some other dude (Sauer Kraut?) stole it word for word and claimed it as his own. People’s FAQs used to get jacked back then. Didn’t EGM steal people’s FAQs and publish them in their magazine? Oh God, the memories.
Yea big thanks for the info dude! Interesting observation about his super throw. I wonder if he can OTG with his shockwave super afterward? It may require a XFC though. Thor–>Hulk should have some pretty good synergy on their DHC. Air tornado–>gamma quake should work (in theory), as should shockwave–>gamma tsunami. :looney:
I wasn’t the original guy, per se. IIRC, some douchebag came on the forum calling everyone losers for playing Tekken instead of trying to get laid and how he knew Lavar Arrington or something. I made a few posts afterwards telling people about Laid? was awesome and every needs to get it. The dudes that would eventually do Shinra ran with the joke.
And I def remembered that Hulk dude. Sooo annoying lol. He’d single-handedly shut down the forum for an entire weekend.
Ah, drumdude. I can’t remember the site, but I’m sure I registered. I can’t remember that drama. I do remember annaquin and his amazing combos though. To this day, I’m still not sure if he was a troll, thought people were really gullible, or just really didn’t understand what a “combo” was.
That kinda sucks. But maybe usage of it will improve as people get more comfortable, like possibly doing more air dash > Strike to offensively close space. At least I hope it’ll improve.
Looking at the official vids, it looks like you do Hammer Spin, E (whatever the notation for Hammer Spin is).
I think Wolvie/Hulk or Wolvie/Thor are gonna be really good together, at least short-term. I’m hoping Wolvie’s Drill Claw can catch runaway Storm/Trish without having to select an anti-runaway assist.
That blows. Even if he punched before the flash, wouldn’t that mean that the throw has some startup? And wouldn’t that mean you could jump after the super flash? Or are pre-jump frames different in this system? I don’t know TvC/MvC3’s system mechanics enough.
I’m really liking the idea of a Thor team partnered with Hulk and Wesker/Spencer. Lead off with Wesker or Spencer, use them to get in close, then do an air combo exchange, DHC, or some other tag-in and let Thor/Hulk finish it off for major damage. The assists look solid no matter who’s on point, since you’ll have Mighty Smash, Gamma Wave or Charge, and either Samurai Edge or Bionic Arm (whatever it’s actually called). DHCs seem strong, too, with Thor’s and Hulk’s shockwaves going well together, and Thornado and Gamma Quake/Crush going back and forth freely, and then Maximum Wesker and Hyper Bionic Arm/Reel (or whatever) meshing with pretty much anything. It’s all theory craft, but in my head it seems like a huge damage team with a way to get around the low mobility most big damage teams seem to have to deal with.
Yea I’m definitely thinking about Spencer/Thor/Hulk. I mentioned it before, but a big question mark for me is how Spencer’s ranged grab will interact with projectiles. That will make/break it as an assist. I’m still majorly concerned about getting zoned to death with that team though. Honestly I’m most excited about playing Spencer and She Hulk out of all the revealed characters thus far, but I’m just sticking around the Thor forums since so little info has dropped on the other two.
Ultimately I think Thor/Hulk should always be a solid pair of partners, and I’ll rotate the third person with She Hulk or Spencer. I’m gonna rep those four the most when the game drops. Maybe Haggar if he looks decent, and/or maybe Taskmaster if the rumors about him are true–he supposedly has a special where he shoots arrows into the air and they come down on top of the opponent. I’m all about something like that if it ends up being one of his assists.
Yup, I’m excited about Taskmaster, too (the only one besides Lei Lei of the rumored list that I’m actually looking forward to). I also agree with the comment on Spencer’s assist dealing with projectiles–that will make it either awesome or useless.
I’m a little less concerned about zoning with either Mighty Smash or Gamma Wave/Charge backing up the point character, and I think Wesker is gonna be a great anti-zoner, too. The issue is still one to be concerned with, though, and I’m still thinking about other characters who might help deal with it. Some of the ones I would speculate could be useful would be Cap’s shieldarang (especially a 45-degree one if he has it), any of the keepaway characters (though I don’t think they’d mesh so well with the team overall), and Amaterasu–though if Lei Lei is in and plays anything like I imagine her to, she could be great.
I’m kind of Meh about Taskmaster. I mean, he looks a lot like Doom in terms of appearance and he can’t copy superpowers, only physical moves and abilities. That means he’ll probably have a moveset consisting of borrwed normals and some non-superpower special moves, which sounds a bit boring.
Yah the main reason I want someone with a vertical ranged assist (like Dorm’s pillar or Taskmaster’s rumored arrow drop) is primarily because of MODOK and his shield. I want something that will hit him from above or below and ignore the shield entirely. Standard projectiles will just get absorbed by the shield while he still gets to spam ranged damage. Otherwise I’d just accept pretty much any generic assist that would let me get closer.
Well… MODOK’s shield raises a ton of questions. The vertical projectile attacks are one obvious answer, but I think lots of others will need to be tested. Will Cap’s shieldarang go through the shield and hit on the way back, or just rebound off? What about low attacks, or Doom rocks/missiles, or Gamma Wave, or Cold Stars, or Spencer’s arm, etc. etc. Hell, Thor’s lightning bolt seems to have massive projectile priority, so what about that?
