SSF4 Tier List Thread REBOOT Super + AE (Updated: 02-01-09)

Regarding this, I will say that the vast majority of players complained that SF4 was far too defensive. Perhaps Capcom listened and decided to emphasize offense this time.

Not that I agree with all the nerfs. Some were just stupid.

That’s an opinion though. And defense wasn’t really sacrificed.

I don’t see what’s wrong with leveling the playing field. I mean what AE basically does is make mid/low tier rushdown chars stand a chance vs god tier defensive chars. I agree the twins are a little over the top (I personally hate them) and a lot of nerfs are uncalled for. But at the same time I’m glad some characters like Makoto, Sakura, Hakan, Dee Jay, Ken and Adon are getting a little help.

Capcom shouldn’t have nerfed anyone at all if you ask me. They should’ve just buffed the bottom/mid tier characters imo.

I’ve played AE many many times, and it feels like an improvement. Only Yun feels out of place, like a “nail that sticks up”. I do find the most powerful characters interesting though. Yun, Yang, Fei Long, Ken, Sagat, Viper, Dictator and Makoto.

I feel that if Capcom had taken to buffing the elements of certain characters that required strategy, the game would have become a lot more interesting. Now it’s sort of like 3S tiers where there’s a strong, wide set of top tier, but a couple of chars that really just dominate.

I think Arcade Edition has a long life ahead of it (well, unless Street Fighter x Tekken or Tekken x Street Fighter hits arcades by storm)

lol you gotta be kidding me. Sagat is so slow and dull. Tiger shot! Tiger shot! Tiger shot! Tiger Knee! Tiger uppercut! Tiger shot!

Tournament wise, Yun vs Fei is way more entertaining to watch than Ryu vs Sagat, Dhalsim vs Guile or E.Honda vs M.Bison.**

and now we come full circle. you claimed this as fact rather than opinion.

and yes defense was sacrificed not as in defense mechanics but defensive characters and by buffing characters that make you guess for free
Honda, Dhalsim, Guile, etc nerfed Makoto, Hakan, Fei, Yun, Yang, etc added/buffed

ima stop though, this is getting out of topic to fast.

@nyo

well of course its going to have a long life, is marvel really going to take off like crazy?

question, was Sagat’s high tiger shot nerfed? Ive played AE but only wasted my time playing Vega.

Adon is a very good character in console super. Ken and Sakura benefit a lot from other characters getting worse, they are both viable in console. Mak/Hakan/Dee Jay needed the help, but honestly their changes without nerfing anyone would have been fine. Makoto shot way up, Hakan is the same sort of character but not terrible, and a lot of Dee Jay’s design flaws(he’s terribly designed in super, it’s like they ignored what made ST Dee Jay good) were corrected.

Also the problem is the playing field isn’t level. Based off of results AE is way less balanced than console super, and a lot of characters are worse for no apparent reason.

Leveling the playing field is making all character types viable, not making a handful of characters better than everyone else, and giving the middle finger to everyone else. Characters like Vega did not need any nerfs, but for whatever reason they ended up having things nerfed.

Console has a high tier character for pretty much every archetype, and I think thats good for a game overall especially when there are so many good and viable characters.

Maybe I’m dumb though, when I hear level I think balance.

I don’t think he’s any less cheap than Fei. =P

Fei is strong but he doesn’t feel cheap imho. Especially in AE with the hk cw nerf. Yun on the other hand is strong AND cheap as shit.

That’s why there are like 8 yun in the top 20 and only 1 or 2 Fei.

Vulcan hades is talking about Vanilla Sagat when he’s probably not even played that game.

There are 5 Yuns and 4 Feis. For a top 20 that’s a lot for either character.

if you go by top 50 there’s twice as many yuns as fei longs, yangs, or sagats I believe

also no charge characters except bison in top 50 due to them nerfing charge characters across the board (except Deejay)

easy mode cheap character is worse than a cheap character with a learning curve? In they end they both are the same. I guess I understand the concern though. You have a character like Yun who makes efforts with other characters seem meaningless.

hypothetically, if there is a rebalance and yun is the only one touched, then that same group of players will migrate to fei long. But I guess until that happens, there’s no point in bickering about it.

fei long at least has a set of bad matchups/counters that are already well known, they all got nerfed but he’s still disadvantaged in most of his formerly bad matchups

the twins are a complete earthquake to the overall flow/balance of the game since they have literally every offensive option imaginable to them and neither of them seem to have any bad matchups except gief.

I’ve played yun a lot and[probably due to my character choice: makoto]] he is just a beast upclose. His c.lk is godlike and with meaty dive kicks is straight up guessing time with pleasant encores for most of the night. Still he has low life[3-4 Hawk SPDs and he’s out for sure] and low stun[wheeeeeee corner combos] and so it feels like it evens out somewhat for me. The few things that confuse me and put him over the edge for me tho is his oddly invincible dragon kick letting it be used as a shoryu for anti-air[//okwhatever] and as everyone says EX Lunge punch. Why is this move so safe? At certain distances he can BD out of reversal SPDs. And so ultra-combable? Its like Rufus level fear from half screen, move cautiously friends.

Also Fei not so cheap? You haven’t been staring at him the corner ever have you?

fei has no stupid dive kicks or “get in for free” move…he actually has to walk and poke you to the corner (and his walking speed is quite ass honestly). He has to put some effort into cornering you and with good footsies it’s not like you’re gonna get cornered in 10 seconds (then again, makoto has basically no footsies). When you’re cornered it’s a fucking nightmare, that’s true, but he has to gain that positional advantage, he doesn’t get it for free. Also if he mis spaces a rekka you can punish him and get out…this doesn’t happen with yun who can rape you safely with dive kick/grab/command grab mixups all day, both wether you’re cornered or not.

id like to give a hell yeah for constructive fei long comments by non fei long mains.

but speaking objectively, fei can corner his opponents pretty easily. 1 successful rekka string usually equals corner rape.

My view is that just because Fei costs 99c and Yun costs 79c, it doesn’t mean that Fei isn’t also cheap compared to the rest of $2 cast.

yeah, hes kinda cheap. no real weaknesses and all. maybe walk speed. that sounds like the arguments against vanilla sagat tho.

im fully expecting damage nerfs by the time this hits console. most of what he has seems fair, except for the big damage combos from CWs, and the 9 character meterless death combo. 450 meterless with a heavy jump in is a bit excessive

Is Yun’s EX lunge punch invulnerable or something? What’s stopping everyone from just hitting it? It’s not that fast.

And if Yun’s lunge punches are safe on block, I want all of Dudley’s machine gun blows to be safe too.

Yun has that Abel cheapness where a couple moves allow him to get in, then all of his other moves force you to guess and lead to big damage when you guess wrong. Fei has to play more solidly to do less damage overall, and because of this there’s a clear divide between skilled players and the less skilled when it comes to him. Overall, that’s just better character design, without regard to how good he is or isn’t in this game. S-tier shouldn’t equate to “stupidly random.”

There are obvious things to fix for both characters though (damage mainly). I have faith Capcom will ground them accordingly to make the game more balanced like Super again.

It’s one of those moves that starts up slowly but travels very quickly (i.e. the hardest ones to react to). I wasn’t lying when I said it was one of the most DERP specials I have seen. If you space each version correctly it’s safe on block, meaning you can cross the screen in less than one second and be right in the opponent’s face. It also has after-images which make it difficult to see when Yun will arrive in front of you.

It is sort of what it would be like if Dudley’s MGB were safe on block and could juggle into Ultra anywhere on screen.

I’d like to add that EX lunge isn’t just safe, it’s PLUS frames on block, you’re completely at yun’s mercy after blocking it to guess between low/command grab
