SSF4 Lessons with Justin Wong, Mike Ross, Marn and Gootecks

so there’s nothing to be said for learning properly? Playing top level players who don’t let you abuse anything and have solid fundamentals gives you better learning opportunities than playing randoms on XBL or 99% (or more likely, 100%) of the people in your local scene.

You can’t teach talent to anyone. Some guys just got it like that. It doesn’t matter if it was Tony Hawk teaching me how to skate vert, or Kobe Bryant showing me how to hit that fadeaway jumper, or Shaun White showing me how to pull off alleyoop double McTwists. People need to realize that they will NEVER be Marn or Wong or Daigo. You do not possess their exact talents. Sure you could pay them, and im pretty sure they won’t turn down money (free money, at that), but don’t think that it’s an equal trade.

They can only teach you what is within their limits: They can’t teach you how to think, how to land every combo, how to react to every attack and how to adapt to every matchup. Some things you’re going to have to find out another way. You can’t go to Jiffy Lube and expect them to perform some body work on your car, its just not within their limits.

The same applies here. Know that you will be taught, and you will learn something. Just realize that you may or may not get your moneys worth, depending on what you’re expecting to learn.

You really don’t know what they’re going to do within the hour time frame.

It’s kind of a huge assumption on your part to say that they wont get their money’s worth. You’re just not in the position to make that claim.

I don’t disagree with this. But you can get very similar training elsewhere, albeit it may take a much longer time to learn, and it may be in the form of tournaments and just reaching out to better players. I agree their training will help, but it can be obtained by other means for those who’d rather “Do it Yourself”.

Everybody needs to think this over again. It’s not a terrible idea at all and it’s not like it’s useless.

I paid $30 one time to get a CS lesson from one of the greatest strat callers around at that time from ESEA, back when I played CS competitively. I was really skeptical at first but it was actually totally worth the money. It’s not so much about the pros teaching you new things (although this sometimes comes with it) as it is about them picking out flaws in your game and telling you exactly what you need to work on and the best ways to work on it. And in the case of having a strat caller teaching you, they also teach you a ton of little tips and tricks while they’re at it. It’s more like a having a coach in a sport than it is like sitting in a classroom.

However, I would NEVER pay for more than one lesson. I would recommend people take one lesson from their pro of choice, so that that pro can help point them in the right direction. Once they’ve done that, there isn’t much more they can do for you, they can’t magically make your aim (execution in SSF4) better. All they can do is help you learn what you need to work on. But to me this is worth $30-$40 as the amount you learn about your game in an hour with a pro is what it takes weeks if not months to learn on your own.

That said, I wouldn’t be one of the first to sign up for a lesson with these guys, let them get into a groove first so they actually get some idea of what they’re doing.

You didn’t read properly, but I forgive you. I left the discussion open for both possibilities. I didn’t in any way insist that they would be wasting their time or money.

I’m willing to bet $40 that whoever takes these online lessons end up no better off after their hour is up.

Nah, thats a pretty bogus claim. As long as the person trying to learn isn’t a braindead schmuck, he’s going to learn something, even if its just the mistakes he constantly makes.

I was talking more along the lines of them not being able to teach you how to react/combo/match ups.

You’re obviously entitled to your opinion.

I turned somebody who couldn’t tell Soulcalibur from DOA into a fairly okay Soulcalibur 4 player with comprehension of wake-up strategy, poking, punishing mistakes, and actually parrying attacks when he sees them coming.

People who want to learn will learn, and although results may vary - there will be results.

Just as results vary, so to what value people put on them. Would I pay for lessons? Nah, just too many vids and online write-ups. But I don’t mind it as there is a market for it. Viva la capitalism.

how about i pay them in monopoly money

Technically these guys are giving you a decent deal, any counter-strike/pc players around here had to deal with like 60$ per hour lessons. Double that if you wanted your whole team(5 guys) trained.

Oh well they can certainly “walk you through” the process of the timing, what to be on the look out for, and what to expect. My point was (as was mentioned before) this is being done through skype, so really, if you’re having trouble doing combos for instance, the only thing they can really do is tell you what you’re doing right/wrong. They cant show you in person by manipulating your fingers where your timing is off. They cant be in your brain every time a punish situation is presented and react accordingly for you. There are some things that YOU’RE going to have to accomplish yourself.

Again, I wasn’t trying to take anything away from these guys, cuz they are good at what they do. Just realize that theres only so much they can do for you. The rest is in your hands, literally.

Or Tridents layers Gum!!

This nigga said soul caliber…

roflmfao. I’m done. Quote of the year

As much as I think some of these guys are chill and all, they are not even worth $10/hour for video game lessons. It just ain’t that big.

That said, this is gonna turn over after the handful of people buying these lessons stop.

but to get the money to pay for training i need to win tournaments on streetfighter.

to win tournaments on streetfighter i need to get the cash for the training.

catch 22 sit here.

Actually, lessons like these are extremely beneficial for high level players who already mastered all the basics and executions, just not from these guys.

What you want to learn from a really good player is just strategy in matchups, nothing else. Strategy(what to do at what time, how to think, what to react to) is what determines the level of a player, since one can always train his reaction and execution by himself, but new strategies and thoughts only come by accident. The top players in the world are the ones with the most advanced strategies that overpowers others, and anyone who already knew what they were doing and are putting in the time for training would gain leaps and bounds from just a few moments talking to pros, and would be set for a very long time since they won’t need to change their playstyle for a very long time afterwards.

But what these guys are offering are just bad wares, if any of them went to SBO this year they still won’t make it past the first two rounds. So having them telling you how to play is just a waste of money since if you took it anywhere like Japan it wouldn’t work. I’d be more than willing to pay someone like Momochi $50 just for 20 minutes of talking and nothing else. Just recording down what he does for each matchup would make me twice the player for a long time to come. But not to people like Wong or Gootecks, I can get there myself.
