Besides Flash Kick and cr. HP, what are his other anti-airs and in what situations are they best used?
Other than safe jumps, what are you guys doing after a throw/sweep and why? (I’ve been just throwing Booms, but I’m looking for something more offensive and scary when I’m walking up to them).
I know Guile’s game is primarily a grounded one, but does he have any good air normals?
St mk is an awesome anti air. Air throw is great too as it starts up so quick. J HK is a great air to air. St mp is great but unfortunately sometimes cl st mp comes out and that’s rubbish.
Upside Down Kick mix ups are the in thing right now. If you do a meaty UDK on wake up it’ll counterhit all tech attempts. So mixing up UDK combos with throws, target combos, overhead and of course occasionally blocking to keep your opponent honest and you have something approaching a basic game.
You also have the psuedo safejump after a back throw (f hp) that will be safe against a DP (don’t hit an air normal and it’ll work as a bait).
Guile has THE air throw, which lets you decide what side your opponent will get knocked down and starts in 3, j hk has huge range, nueutral j hp is great too, j lk is his cross up but it kinda sucks tbh.
Play on the UK endless stream on XBL to get used to the pressure. I suggest that you look for the UK FGC group or the SF FIENDS group to help you out. They have players like Ixion, Overmostheads, Incognitus, and myself along with other players with different skill levels. Learning match ups and playing under pressure will help you.
Been working on developing a more sound play style around Guile’s Cr.Lp > St.Hp Link. I’m finding that staying at such a close range gives me a better read as to what my opponent’s “Go-To-Panic” buttons and be able to develop counter poke strategies more easily. The lp > hp link leaves Guile at the perfect range where should the opponent try to jump in immediately, they can be anti air’ed easily. I can also take a slight step backwards to force their normal to whiff and counterpoke with far St. Heavy Kick (Step Kick) before their normal recovers (this works extremely well against E.Ryu’s cr.mk). The cr.lp > st.hp link also puts Guile at perfect spacing where his opponents have to guess whether Guile is going to go for a reversal bait, tick throw or Counterhit set up.
EDIT: Doesn’t seem to work too well against Grapplers though. LOL
You know what pisses me off? The fact that Guile’s health nerf and counterhit on Booms combined is so stupid that if someone mashes out an Ultra right when Guile throws a boom, he literally loses half of his life. A full 50% of his life is dropped.
And they give people Ultra’s that can go 3/4 of the screen. Like really?
You’re losing the first round w pixel health and opponent has lots. Is it worth recuperating mentally there and then and attempting a comeback or better to lose the round and mentally prepare for the next one?
I don’t really know what to say about question 1 since Guile doesn’t have much in the way of “explosive comeback” tools or options, but regarding question 2, I usually focus on trying to just boom the round out to build meter for then next round if possible.
On a random note… I had a horrible night online last night and lost to just about every rush down character possible (although it eventually ended with me recouping the PP’s I lost and breaking even for what that’s worth… lol). Combination of my joystick apparently being semi-broken, laggy ass connections all night, and just all around crappy feeling play/bad matchups. It’s nights like these that make me feel Guile is just completely outdated with everything in the game now; I mean sure, we all manage to squeeze out some success with him to a degree, and I enjoy playing him of course, but man, full screen ultras, all the safe tools to get in with, and the nerf mandates they insist he needs to be “balanced” kill this game for me sometimes, to the point where I seriously just don’t play for weeks. He’s basically the same dude from SF2, but everything around him has changed drastically. I won’t quit using him, but it’d be nice for Guile to be given the little things he needs to be complete just once in this series. Okay, end rant. lol =)
I already do the meter building, I was just wondering if there’s anything else beyond that. Like if it’s even worth mounting an offence at that point (natural comeback)?
Agreed with everything you said about Guile. Tbh I’ve had a love hate relationship with him since vanilla. I absolutely hate how he doesn’t fit into the game and for all the reasons you stated, but at the same time I love playing “proper” SF and Guile’s play style overall. So I stick with him, fighting back the tears and AAing fools!
When my life starts running low, I start getting more aggressive (not jumping). I tend to be able to mount comebacks using frame traps and pressuring more. I know that people begin crouch teching when you get close and they have a life lead. I also realized that players will seldom reversal for risk of getting baited and losing life.
If I’m in range, I’ll throw them. If not, I’ll just hold down back and not do anything unless I see them go into a Level 3 Focus then I’ll just Flashkick them. What’s the worst that they can do off of a Level 1 or 2 Focus Attack? It’s not like it does chip damage or anything. The opponent holding focus in your face is the equivalent of them playing chicken aka who flinches first.
On a side note, if you’re really good with hitting 1f links and you pick up on the focusing. There’s points where you can do Far St.Hp > Far St.Hp (Plink the 2nd st.hp immediately) or Far St.Hp > cr.mp (plink the cr.mp immediately) and knock a huge chunk of damage off of your opponent. It’s risky and you’re reactions need to be really good and fast. I’ve done it quite a few times but then again, I play extremely risky anyways. lol.
On a side note, I personally believe Guile Vs Ryu is 6-4 in Guile’s favor. I played a huge set (we were playing for 3 hours straight nonstop) against a solid Ryu player at a local event in NYC. 8/10 times I was able to force him into the corner by staying right outside of his sweep range and made him scared of throwing fireballs as well as any other pokes. I was abusing Guile’s long range command normals to where every single normal of Ryu’s wouldn’t be able to reach me at all nor would he be able to dp me in fear of whiffing and not being able to fadc out (not like that would matter anyways, lol. (-5 on block). I was also being very careful of my sonic boom pressure and kept a random pattern of throwing them so he didn’t catch on.
did anyone of one watch the live stream from shadowloo showdown? I was on stream yesterday and lost to a rolento player 2-1named Sketch who is from the States. The game changer was with the BS ultra 2 when I had the life lead in the deciding round in game 3. I hate it when i fall for gimmicks but i should have been paying attention regardless.
I just watched it. That’s tough. I usually fall for that stuff when I don’t know the matchup. Like Chun Li’s ultra, etc. Overall you looked good there, though.
