SSF4 Guile General Discussion Thread

I would like to congratulate Warahk for making top 8 at NCR8. Didn’t watch who you lost to in winners but I did see the match vs you and Crizzle. Viper is definitely not a good match for Guile. Even I am guilty for losing to Viper in the past month in tourney. I know we don’t talk much or anything but we should find time to discuss the Viper match-up or any in particular.

Also, Lamerboi for competing in NCR8. Again I did not watch the stream until I came back from my travel this weekend, so I don’t know who you lost to.

thanks!

Thanks dieminion, i lost to ricky in winners final in my pool. Despite what that video showed I am actually very familiar with the viper match up, it’s the match i’ve played the most. i do really well against jayce, who i consider to be better than crizzle, no offense intended. Crizzle was in my pool at SCR, i beat him there. he told me he spent a lot of time watching videos of me and researching the match up since SCR. Crizzle read me like a book the first round and it mind fucked me for the rest of the set. I also beat marns viper in pools at NCR, not recorded.

Yes man, I can tell that. You looked very dissapointed after you lost, I could see you on the background on the stream. . Every body was talking and posting shit about the rage quit last time. But, this time around, you lost with dignity and proved to be one of the best american guiles.

Now that you mention your lost vs ricky, is there a way to see the matches you played on saturday, I would like to see those aswell.

Hey I was wondering if you guys had any advise or key move sequences for agression when the opponent is cornered. Dieminion does this really nicely. But just ways to keep momentum going, when I can expect to be able to 2-in-1 into another boom, r general attacking ideas to keep in mind as I “freestyle,” etc. I know Guile usually wants to be lame, but when they’re cornered is guile’s chance to rtsd. Any advice on doing that? Thanks!

Just finished reading about some changes to Guile on EVENHUBS for the Arcade Ed. And I am disappointed.

  • Close Toward or Back + Hard Kick (Sobat) now can avoid crouching attacks.

  • Sonic Hurricane damage nerfed.

  • Air Throw startup time increased to 4 frames. Was 3 frames in SSF4.

I thought Sobat kick already AVOIDS low attacks, so no buff there. Everything else just sucks.
I know this is just a brief glimpse of changes but shouldn’t Guile be getting buffs rather than nerfs? It just doesn’t make any sense.

Hey guys, I’ve been working on my combo game with Guile and the more technical aspects. I’ve been avoiding this for a long time, but I feel that I should work on my technical game with Guile. There are two issues I’m having. I can do his basic bnb stuff like jab into fierce, and his cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.mp xx flashkick. But I’m having issues with UDK, st.FP, sonic boom. I can’t seem to get this link down at all.

Also I’m having issues with Guiles dash ultra. I’ve given up on flashkick fadc ultra. But I really am trying to get dash ultra down. I have been in training mode, and I do the inputs perfectly, but it still doesn’t come out. Is there some type of trick to this? As in going neutral and then doing b,f + PPP? And advice would be greatly appreciated

The UDK > FP is easier to do on certain characters than others. And when the game first came out I was able to dash>SH but trying it lately I can’t get it anymore either for some reason.

lol if you think that’s even half of the nerfs, prepare to be even more disappointed. let’s all hope i’m wrong though

I hope so too. Well, we’ll know by next week.

By UDK > S.FP are you referring to after a lv 2 focus? That link doesn’t work unless the UDK is meaty, which is why it isn’t working on normal standing characters. If you land a focus though, it’s like a 2-3 frame link. UDK only gives +4 frame advantage on hit, so c.lp / c.mp are your only two realistic options there. UDK > C.MP > fp.boom (or ex boom) would be the trick to use. Pretty sure lp and mp booms don’t travel fast enough to hit them after the c.mp cancel.

In regards to the dash ultra, it’s just (player 1 side) :l: (hold), :r::r:, :l:, :r: + :3p: . The back charge gives you the initial back input, the dash forward is your forward input, then while dashing it’s just back, forward, punches.

i’ve been doing the UDK from a L3 focus attack not a L2. Does this only work for L2 focus attack? Anyway, I really want to master this link because of the damage. I figured I can get some pretty beefy damage if I get a focus crumple, so that’s why I’m going for this link as opposed to the (apparently more reliable) udk > cr.mp link.

As far as dash ultra, those are my exact inputs. Except I’m trying it with a focus dash forward. What I do is db, b+FA, f,f, b,f + PPP. In training mode this is exactly how my inputs appear so it SHOULD work. I think it’s an issue with how I’m timing it. Which is why I’m wondering do you need to go into neutral after the dash, and then do the b,f +PPP. I’m SO determined to learn this, I’ve been practicing it since the game came out. But been too lazy to actually figure out how to do it.

Why on God’s Blessed Earth would they nerf U2? The only time it is ever used in high level play is via FADC, which by then it does negligable damage anyhow (imo it’s better not used at all; the edge of having it stocked outweighs the 100~ damage you get off from using it in those combos but w/e).

It’s not like Guile was prawning anyone with it outside of high play either (once you’ve jumped into SH the first time it’s highly unlikely you will do it again) and the damage isn’t exactly big either. It just seems very arbitray, almost as if capcom were thinking: hey guys what move can we nerf for all the Guile players? And then some ass-clown in the group said U2.

Branh,
Here’s some visual support.

Hit the :hp: when you see Guile’s leg horizontal. You can also just simply hit :hp:~:mp: to find the linking easier.

My advice is, practice it a million times, thats the only way to get the timing. I started of like you and now I can pretty much crumple anybody into s.hp or s.mp >sb > fadc> ghk>fk>fadc> u2

Don’t forget to check the list over on the combo thread for all of the character specific crumple UDK combos Branh.

Even after a crumple, be it lvl 2 or 3, a s.hp is NOT guaranteed after an UDK. It’s all character specific. If you want to practice the link that works on everyone, take a dummy with a big hitbox, like Abel, Rufus, Zangief, Sagat, etc. and start hitting lvl 2 crumple > UDK > c.mp xx light boom. Once you master that, it only gets easier from there.

BTW, sorry I haven’t updated any of the threads lately. My internet situation has been less than stellar.

So even though Guile is now merely “competitive”, they’re taking him back down again with a bunch of unnecessary changes? For f*cks sake, can’t they just leave the damn game alone for once? The balance of the game finally feels halfway decent.

I’m hoping that with the Air Throw and U2 nerf Capcom will buff other areas to improve Guile’s chances against cross ups.

You guys are crazy. The air throw thing won’t really effect him that much, same goes for sonic hurricane. That with the fact that f/b.mk was mentioned probably means they buffed it’s hitbox to tag things like shoto c.mk which it couldn’t before. Pure speculation.

But Guile was always competitve, even in Vanilla. His issue was he didn’t have anything scary to fight the top, top tiers with,… namely ryu, akuma, and sagat. Even if they nerfed sonic hurricane down to something rediculous like 200 damage, it would still mean that those guys are going to be afraid to throw fireballs within it’s range, which hurts their game like crazy. If they said something like they were going to nerf U2’s range, that would be something to worry about. But guile’s great, and is still going to be great. Have you seen some of the nerfs characters have gotten? How the heck is honda supposed to beat Guile now? Seriously?

To the best of my knowledge there was some conflicting translations and I think they’re doing something with Upside-Down Kick, not the Sobats… though it would be really nice if they made forward sobat hit shotos as you fly over their c.mk

… and if Honda still has an unchanged butt slam then all he needs to do is spam that and I’m still free =P (god I need to learn how to counter that… /salt…)

I think in general I’m just sort of annoyed that they’re doing any kind of balancing to any characters at this point. I’m not “worried” per se about the changes to Guile, but the game overall and the match ups all feel fine the way they are not; why change anything for the arcade release, you know? At this point, everyone seems to finally gotten adjusted to the original changes made for Super, and now it’s going to be even more adjusting… oh well, whatever. =P
