I am fully aware that my game could use improvement but not in the area that you specified I am perfectly happy with not guessing and letting them back themselves into the corner at times sorry if you don’t feel the same way. Guessing all the time is going to make you inconsistent.
I never really thought about that approach. I mean, I’ve always done it instinctively against T. Hawk because it’s pretty fuckin stupid to have to guess between a high damage command grab/ultra and a DP, but I never really tried it in other matchups where guessing after SPD can be just as or more disastrous for Gief than his opponent. Ima experiment with this…

Try and consider most gief mains dont use a secondary-and since ur viper is somewhat gdlk (lol) u can use her for counter picks. but the reason people say gief isnt balanced is because he has so many bad-very bad matchups that he def. needs a rebalance. So, the only question now is WHAT to change not IF although everyone has their opinions right or wrong in respect to WHAT. Just imagine u used gief the whole tourney without viper …even at near perfection he will never win EVO or upcoming SBO as he is right now.
You do realize that I only played Viper 2 matches at Evo both of which were top 16 matches?..and I lost both of those matches once to Tokido and once to Poongko…and even then it was a mistake because I did better with Gief than Viper against Poongko…I didn’t win a single match with Viper the whole tournament so yea…
Bad Matchups aren’t unwinnable. I mean yeah, when Dhalsim can hp you 10 times a match from across the screen for free the matchup sucks, but it’s not like you can’t win. The SF4 Series has yet to have an actual 0-10 matchup, and I can guarantee there will never be one. Saying “There’s no way I can win against this character” before you plugin your stick is the easiest way to lose.
Good job getting top 8 flash. I think you really might be on to something with ae gief needing to be less pressure wake up oriented less because of how much damage you could take but because it gives them a chance to guess out of the corner. I’ve been playing “I’m a crazy gief” style gief and it works to a point but I’m getting beat by the real top tier players so I need to change stuff up. You seem to be having success using a low risk stlye gief play. I’m sick of getting top 8 and want to start getting top 3 in larger regional tourneys. And I’m not losing to characters I’m losing to players because I’m not losing to sagats or akumas. I really appreciate you throwing your two cents in on this stuff.

You are forced to play a good secondary character if you want to get #1 at majors with gief, the sagat/dhalsim/akuma/chun matchups are not winnable consistently at top level.

@flash Straight up man, what I was suggesting has nothing to do with making a guess. The ego thing? That’s for putting words in my mouth. I don’t appreciate that. I never said “your playstyle is flat out wrong”. I’ve been playing Gief since vanilla and not competitive til recently. You made top 8, congrats. I made top 100 and was very close to top 32. For the amount of time I put into the game and match-ups I ran into, I am proud of that. I did well.
Bottom line is, I offered an opinion and you rejected it.
I don’t have to prove myself to any of you. Nor should any of you have to prove yourselves to me. Be constructive or don’t respond.
P.S. - After messing around with crumple to U2… seems character specific and a very small window to land it. No thanks.
WOW really flash? the whole tourney till top 8?..damn then u probably on to something. really tho, because for one your “play style” or attitude towards gief’s movement is diffrent- hence the flack. To some extent, most giefs have become flow chart and follow some patterns in diffrent matchups that we has seen from other top players or read. If you feel the akuma matchup or any other terrible matchup isnt so bad and that you lost because of unforced errors (so to speak) then what SHOULD you have done diffrently?
Because watching the aquasilk fight in the post evo vids- aqua played gief like he’s “meant” to be but didnt get a round. Maybe its tokidos akuma but tokido was pretty much auto pilot in that set.
I think if we come and share ideas\video its would be more constructive.
P.S my bad on sayin your gief couldnt get there alone when he infact did. --I think more people would understand if u could explain what you do diffrently??

You are simply wrong. Vangief consistently places well and I’ve never seen him pick anyone else. I mean those bad matchups are obviously something big to overcome, but it’s very feasible to think a Zangief could win a major in AE.
It sounds to me like you aren’t losing to the characters that can zone Zangief well, you are losing to your own self-defeatist attitude.
Places well and places #1 are two different things. From Vanilla to AE, neither Vance or Zangief have ever won a major. Not in the U.S. Not in Japan. Anybody good enough to get to a major Grand Finals is good enough counterpick Gief for an easy win. It’s sad and sometimes a lil disheartening, but it is what it is.
