SSF4 AE Zangief Changes, Videos, Match-up Discussion

U2 Stuffs a lot of moves i’m finding out(for example Honda headbutts hurricane kicks tiger knee’s all get stopped by U2)
before it was hard to land this move but now if they leave the ground in anyway you got a good chance of catching them in the blizzard

He didn’t even rely on kara TU, TK pressure or any of Sagat’s buttons other than HK and still almost won. What a MU.

It has a lot of priority ! It beats Onis Super, it beats Sagats U1. i think it beats everything beside some Ex- Dragonpunch like moves. Im pretty sure i have been able to beat Ex Flash kick in Super from Guile. dont know about Rufus Ex Messiah. There are no Rufus to play against online !

U2 beats ex dp’s if you are doing the u2 up along with the ex move because the u2 active grab frames last longer than the ex dp’s invinceablity. It just doesn’t work on the way down vs ex moves if you are falling because the grab frames cut off once you hit the ground but if you are going up it tends to work.

U2 is pretty amazing in terms of what it can grab, but I use U1 only because I mess up too much on U2 :T

So now that we have had a bit of time where do you rank Gief?

I see him as a high B tier.

Mid tier or maybe upper mid with no free matchups , can hold his own against twins but has matchups were you need to counterpick or have A LOT of luck.

To me he’s probably right in the middle or maybe slightly lower. I think it’s too early to tell how the mu’s will be against the four new characters but I’d say he beats Evil Ryu, is probably even with the twins, and might end up losing to Oni.

Some matches of me vs Rockhowar (Chun), if you are familiar with the EU scene you will know how strong player he is. I did make some stupid mistakes, but I still need to work on the matchup a bit more:

If you jump late after sweep you can do reaction ultra when you see the yellow flash of her ex legs, rather than guessing

Your game is pretty good in this matchup, I would suggest that you use U2 differently (to come back on the debate about U2).

I almost only use U2 in SSFIV AE (I didn’t in SSFIV), but I almost never try to grab a dragon or something like that with it. It’s sad that people think U2 can only be used as an anti SRK thing. In your video, you clearly try to get Chun-Li to use her EX SBK so you can grab it with U2. That’s not a bad idea, except your opponent already knows that, and will more certainly try to block/backdash (that you can’t grab because you’re already falling from your jump).

In most matchups, I use U2 to punish every situations where the opponent is leaving the ground. For example, it’s perfect to punish someone who jumps at the exact same time as you do, cause there’s nothing they can do to avoid it (you can even grab Dhalsim’s teleport if you use it soon enough). Just because you can give a parabolic direction to U2, you can use it more as an aggressive tool than for punishment. I use it a lot to punish every opponent’s jumps when cornered (usually trying to avoid lp SPD and its crazy range). It’s also perfect for punishing Ibuki’s or Viper’s high jumps, Akuma’s and Ibuki’s air projectiles (even more perfect because they are floating a bit in the air when throwing a kunai/fireball), almost every wall jump in the game, blocked SRKs (need a good timing though), etc.

For a better effect, of course, you’ll have to know exactly how to land an U2 immediatly after you left the ground, or you’ll have to deal with an easily punishable EX RBG…

Of course, an oppononent who took your U2 once or twice will mostly stop jumping when you have it : you won’t believe how many empty jump -> SPD you can land with just that kind of pressure.

I use Ultra 2 in almost every matchup. It’s not about landing it every single time you have it but the fact the opponent is hesistant to leave the ground when you have it. It’s also used for great utility purposes when needed. I’ve used it to avoid antiair U2 from Dudley, U1 from Makoto, etc. I’ve also used it to escape the corner if necessary. I think it’s 10 times more useful than Ultra 1 now just because of the numerous options you have with it.

I’d only use Ultra 1 in a mirror match and maybe against Abel.

You need ultra 1 to punish:
Sagat - EX Tiger Knee
Ken - Tatsu
Adon - H/M Jaguar Kick and M Jaguar Tooth

And it’s just way more useful against characters you probably wouldn’t meet in their air i.e. Makoto, Dee Jay, Balrog, etc.

are you sure u can u1 punish sagat ex tiger knee?

You can punish most Tiger Knees on guard with SPD, Super or U1. It depends on the distance and the version (LK, MK, HK or EX) of the TK. Not all EX Tiger Knees are punishable like this, though, but I recommend you try on training mode to get an idea. Basically, reversal U1 will grab most of the Tiger Knees you guarded.

If the sagat is any good don´t try to punish regular tk´s with spd/u1 because if tk is well spaced is safe on block. Top sagats will space it correctly and punish your spd.

Balance patch coming towards the end of the year. I wonder what they’re gonna do to the Cyclone this time.

More nerfs? :frowning:
Wonder how much attention the characters will get who aren’t Yun.

Watch them lower the stun on his headbutt and make his lariat even more trash.

On a positive not shoutouts to Flash rep that Gief.

Also that was crazy by Van but the negative of no KD keeps showing up.

Hello Gief players!
I’m new in this forum, I have read some of the posts concerning Zangief and I wanted to say thank you to the community and to shoryuken.com in general, some of the tips in here surely had helped me to improve my game.

Do you have any advises for the Juri vs Zangief match up?, I’m having a lot of problems with her lately

Thanks in advance!
