@iMatt RE: Ken - Gief matchup

I’ve played a few Kens online and it seems like this match is better for than it was in Super. It felt much easier to punish Ken’s main pokes (cr.forward and the forward step kick) with a SPD, something that proved difficult in Super if the Ken player was good at spacing those normals. Other than that it felt the same, but this development really helped me shut down those Ken players.

EDIT: The SPD punish also prevents Ken players from aggressively spamming those two pokes, something I’ve seen a lot of Ken players attempt online.

Its so utterly retarded to try and decide the matchups at this early stage… Especially for the new charas, as you have no idea if you’ve really played a good player or not…

@ NR^2, if the stepkick still is -1 when spaced correctly i dont see how a new range on SPD would make it easier to punish.

These are all early impressions. Short term evals if you will.

Most of your matchup analysis here is based around jumping, which gives me the impression you jump way too much. If you do jump in, late knees stuffs slide completely and you can combo off of it, so slide poses approximately no problem at all. Projectile is piss easy to react to and get counter hit knockdown. I have a video of a best of 3 in the arcade with Afii’s Deejay to upload so you will see later this weekend. You can also focus through his fireball but SPD is not guaranteed. The thing I had the most problem with was the dread kicks, I ate a lot of them - I just don’t think I am used to the animation or something - I only ate them by not blocking, rather than pushing buttons. Weird.

Regarding his wakeup flying knee thing pressure, I think theoretically you should be able to focus backdash and recover in time to block - maybe even SPD? Will test next time I face Afii in the arcade. Also whiffing normal GH is probably the worst way to close the distance to a range where he can touch you. Focus instead or just block, in my opinion.

Everyone has an option out of the vortex, focus attack.

I dont see how KD-Gone and Deejays slide nerf can make this Matchup harder. Id say its 6-4 Deejay. EX-Ban on reaction gives Knockdown vs. Fireballs because of Deejays special state when throwing. In addition empty jumping now works to get over fireballs, again because of slide nerf.

@Worstgief

I can’t believe that you excuse Ibuki… Shes a whore, in all sence of the word, except for the selling sex part… Shes a true bitch, her KD leads to so much undeserved damage its discusting. and 13-frame recovery from kunai vs. Focus dash(44frame recovery). Ive never lost to a Ibuki, but i can really see where the whine originates from!

In my experience of playing against ibuki a lot in super (and one of the best imo, fasoll) zangief has advantage in that matchup. I didn´t play the matchup in AE yet, but I don´t think we have disadvantage tbh.

Siberian blizzard it´s just amazing now, one of the best ultras in the game even if it´s high risk it limits your opponent so much now that is ridiculous. I need to test if it´s possible to do walking u2 like you do 1 because that will lead to some scary mixups if they dare to jump.

Also let me retract of what I said earlier, akuma matchup is very very different now, only a 6-4 for akuma which is pretty good considering he is one of the banes of gief since vanilla. Jumping fireballs are gone with u2 and once he is cornered without scape tatsu things can turn around very fast.

Been playing a lot vs good twin players, I´m pretty sure zangief beats Yang. I´m not really sure zangief beats yun, or at least not the way he beats yang, maybe 5.5 advantage.

The only matchup of the ones I play usually that I really miss EX gh kd are cody, feilong and viper. Tbh it´s not as bad as I thought it would be. Zangief is definetly in a better spot in AE than in Super. We should be happy we can deal with the twins BS and make them actually use the brain in a fight.

You can do a standing U2, it requires some quick work with the stick though. I try to buffer it with some kind of move to bait a jump or a DP, but a standing ultra does well too.

The Yun/Yang matchup is very much in Gief’s favor. The Yang matchup is a little less one sided than Yun, but both have difficulties consistently keping Zangief out, just be careful of their DPs and the palm attack - it has very strange properties. If either plays the keep away spam palm to build meter tactic you can either stalk them into the corner or back up and build meter with whiffed SPDs.

I heard a Gief got bodied by Daigo is this true

Um… Ibuki is free on wakeup. Her DP is braindead easy to safe jump. All you have to do is focus attack her as she lands. Doesn’t matter if she kunais or not.

U didn’t miss much bro. The guy was horrible.

Zangief is def. much better in AE, he is MUCH scarier for me when I play E. Ryu Zangief makes short work of E Ryu and 1 grab takes like 20% hp lol

Well E. Ryu does have paper thin health to begin with so far Vangief made quick work of a Ryu earlier hopefully Snake Eyez makes an appearance on the stream.

I’m not liking the takeaway from his KD from EX Hand. I’ve been frustrated as shit squaring off against Oni/Ibuki. I feel like that loss gives them an easy mode reversal instead of increasing my mix-up potential.

I’m pretty sure Sagat match-up is even dumber now, as well as Dhalsim. Only time extra damage on a grab matters is when you’re in a position to land it in the first place.

I’ll keep experimenting and try to be more patient though. I’ll also be maining Dudley since I want to learn a rush down character.

Well Vangief got eliminated by Valle off stream, before that the Fei match frustrated the crap out of him. Snake Eyes was doing real good against Juicebox till he got more comfortable and took it I don’t know if he got eliminated or not.

That cr.MK xx SPD/Ultra to punish corner jumping is kinda sexy. I’m stealin that shit

The sim MU is one where I think it kinda helps since w/o the KD. He’s more inclined to want to backdash or teleport after ex gh pushing him into the corner. Dhalsim in the corner vs a good Gief is a dead sim.

Yeah that was really nice! I wonder if it works on everyone or just some characters.

I have to say so far that I’m really liking the new Gief in AE. The extra range on SPD is really giving me alot more options, especially combined with the improved U2. I haven’t faced a good Sagat or Dhalsim yet though, so we’ll see how that goes… lol

That’s probably the worst idea I’ve ever heard.
