SSF4 AE 2012 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (New)

Luckily he doesn’t punish LP Roll as consistently into combos. He usually stops at cr.LK then goes into blockstrings. I go to local’s gaming HQ to play with this guy, and he IS monstrous. Unfortunately the HQ does not have any recording device. The only one available is the video way back in Super, but not against me.

Not really decent because there were mistakes on Ryu’s side, but I can promise you, he is much better with 1 additional year of experience and AE. He jumps much less, that’s for sure.

Right so. Was having some ranked matches over the weekend and got to meet some Guy. This is a prospective collection of 4 matches over the 2 days. I got to fight VEPArie (Europe) and Mr Roy Lei (Canada). I have seen VEPArie as an online Guy user since vanilla days and in my mind he is certainly a decent enough Guy with 10,000 matches under his belt. I get to match up with him a lot in ranked so I think he is probably ‘same skill’ as me according to xbox? I don’t know Mr Roy Lei but perhaps some of us from across the atlantic can say something about him. Anyways, my video clearly shows that my ranked 200 Gen does have the tools to give them a run for their money. I used a lot of rolls too and they didn’t really manage to punish me too hard as well. Also I got to use focus attacks and to some good effect at times but disastrous at others. Really guys, Guy is alright. We DO have a fighting chance. Abel, Akuma, Yuns give me worse worse nightmare than he does. And when I see ken… my Xbox will ‘suddenly’ experience a power outage.

He looks really good in fact. Surprising numbers of normal slides used, but it does work better in online than in offline

Also, I do agree with you. I don’t see Guy as that bad (srsly, there are much worse matchups -> Ken, Chun, Ken, Ken). It’s just that the match gets really annoying when he can punish all specials except hands (but then again there are a lot more characters who can punish all these and lead to more damage). I never gave out numbers, but I look at it as no higher than 6-4 at worst, no lower than 5-5. If you outplay the opponent, even by a small amount, you have much higher win rate against Guy than say… Ken.

This doesn’t go without saying that there were some matchup knowledge listed here that I didn’t know about. Hopefully I’ll fare better against him on Wednesday.

Worst match-ups are mainly characters who can destroy you on wake-up situations with their mix-up like Akuma, Abel, Seth. And ofcourse characters who have better normals/footsie range like Chun, which can be even worse than mix-ups lol.

Seth and Abel just breaks me. Someone good at vs Abel better post some videos up so that I can learn some tips.

Good stuff Geckolimus, very nice Gen. Thanks for posting.
The only odd thing I noticed is he didn’t really punish your whiffed Gekiros. I get rocked hard for whiffing those.

Ranked play does put pressure on the players. I missed a few good opportunities myself. The way to minimize being punished is to
Whiff far away from the opponent and use lk. Gekiro. It’s always a risk that you will have to take when u whiff. Thanks for your comments!

Ibuki match-up info:

  1. do not get knocked down because you will die.

I already sent this to messiah to add in the OP.

nice ass avatar. wheres that pic from?

on topic. cammy is still giving me problems. its not as simple as before, but if she gets in, its still rape city. she also is on my tough to AA list. air CS fucks up AAnormals, and her jump normals beat non ex giekros. then if you step to the spot where lk giekro works, CS will make it whiff

fuckin dice roll every time she jumps, and the penalty is cody-esque frame traps

Thanks, the pic is from Udon comic designs.

Cammy can be pretty fucking annoying. It gets scary when she gets in ‘the zone’ and keeps scoring knocksdowns from her c.lk c.lp etc sprial arrow combos>repeat only this time with ambiguous cross-up. Can’t really jump in on her at all either without doinbg safejump setup, her godly srk makes sure of that. I just try to play footsies with her and she does CS I usually lk gekiro if I expect it which will usually trade slightly in my favor. Definately a hard match-up though. I have the same problem with Ibuki, worse actually. I probably just suck at her match-up but still, that goddamn vortex is pretty cheap especially because she can time to throw the kunai early or late which means you either need to block left or right. Got raped by some French Ibuki, feels bad man =( Also her (I guess?) frametraps piss me off, with the sweep kicks and then she is sometimes just into range for another sweep kickc block string>I get knocked down again, and the whole fun starts all over again, especially if you play an Ibuki who can actually sjc into her Ultra and such. In general vortex/mix-up characters that rely on wake-up pressure are so hard for Gen to deal with. That Ibuki player got raped hard by my seth simply because he can get out of the vortex by teleporting at the right moment or doing hp srk x1.

Gen definately makes it hard for me to stick with him 100% when playing these kinds of characters lol.

if Cammy is CS happy on your wake-up, use Zetsuei ultra… she’ll stop doing that.

I don’t see Cammy very much at all since the AE. I hate to sound like a boring old Gen but the only tip I can give you is to block LOW. CS can be blocked low and she has got no overheads. Which means that she will have to try to actively to get you to stand and she doesn’t have that many options to do so. Try to use this fact to your advantage.

Gecko.

We are all a bit boring old Gen, deep inside. Lol

My new bad matchup: Sagat. Shit is more annoying than Akuma now. I try like a horse to get through his fireball wall which I cannot dodge with cr.MK, I do all kinds of shits and shenanigans to damage him and all he has to do is one successful TU FADC or an EX knee and I’m suddenly in pressure. If I get hit by either of those I’m back in full screen and I feel like shit.

If anyone could enlighten me on this, I would be really grateful.

i actually think gen beats sagat. after you work your way to mid range, he dosent have many options. your pokes will stuff his fireballs, and sagats jump ins all suck. ive AAed him with like every button gen has clean

only time it gets annoying is when you fight a terrible sagat and he does random ex knees when you step to mid range

Thanks for the reply. To provide more information, I tried to break down my problems:

Full Screen - His cannonball pressure. Problem here wasn’t huge with focus dash in and neutral jump. I just couldn’t dodge shit with crane cr.MK and that was the only annoying part.

Mid Screen (right outside of my focus range) - Really annoying here. He either did a fireball, a backdash, or a random knee. I had to jump, or a focus backdash. Focus forward dash meant he threw another fireball and I got hit. After I got hit, the range changed to…

Mid Screen (right inside of st.MK range~right inside of crane cr.MP range) - He either did a fireball, a focus, a backdash, or an EX knee. Fear of his focus prompted me to cancel my st.MK into hands, and he was back to nearly full screen. I tried LK Gekiro cancel once. It whiffed completely and I lost a chunk of my health from focus. I tried cr.MP xx Roll cancel a few times. It worked usually, but later I got focused before the 2nd hit and I lost a chunk of my health. After I blocked his EX knee, he almost always did one crouching jab (3f) and did a grab. He sometimes didn’t. I lost my guessing game completely here and did LK Gekiro when he continued with his jab (so I got countered out). Only EX Gekiro beat it, but it went back to this range or a close range.

Close range (right outside of st.MP range) - He either did an EX fireball, a st.HK, a LK knee, a random EX knee, a focus, or a random TU FADC. A mixup of LK knee and st.HK was really annoying, but whiffing a cr.MK saved me a few times. I could jump here and do a cross-up, he would usually block and it goes into…

Close range (point blank) - I press a normal, he blocks. I go for a throw, he techs. I go for a frame trap to beat crouching tech, he TU FADCs. It was an annoying guessing game that I didn’t favour due to health difference.

Of course, the situation didn’t happen like this 100% of the times. I managed to win quite a lot from guessing right and doing empty jump into BNB + Oga crossups (It was more like a 45%-55% to 50%-50% win rate rather than something drastic like a 30%-70%, not quite sure since we had a lot of Gen-Yang matches beforehand), but I knew I had trouble, and I tried to pinpoint out the problems I had in this post.

Ex oga on Sagat… Fly through his fireballs and hit him from behind…

I tried that a few times. Unless I started EX Oga earlier than he started his tiger shot (standing), he was usually in time to block it and I ate a TU, so I stopped risking that.

I hit wiki to find out that his whole duration of standing tiger shot is 39f.

Yes, you have to see it coming and start it earlier. Otherwise you can try to do an empty oga if you see that he uppercuts on reaction

note against Cammy: her Vortex works by you teching knockdowns, don’t tech the knockdown and she doesn’t get an ambiguous cross-up setup.

Was playing a Yun yesterday, and it seemed that lk.gekiro works really well against palms in general. (even the feint palm which has lower body invincibility).
