SSF4 AE 2012 Gen Match-ups & Strategies (New)

I can confidently say you are the most enthusiastic Gen player then. I always love your videos, no homo.

Abel info sent and Cody info incoming (hopefully you can convince Yeb to read it and add anything I may have missed).

Can anyone give some indepth matchup tips against Guy? I fought against one of Europe’s best Guy players in a FT10 the other night and the lack of match-up specific punishes and such really hurt me a lot. His pressure was overwhelming to say the least. It ended 3-10

I don’t know why Guy mains feel like he needs more buffs in the 2012 patch because imo he is pretty damn good if you put the effort into him.

If you can hold off I’ll do my experience vs some great guys and how I handle them. I’m working so can’t do it right this minute.

Some tips that I try to remember myself when fighting Guy that I found useful:

  1. You can block the Flying elbows LOW. That limits a significant portion of options Guy has against you when he does those shenanigans in the air.
  2. Guy’s block strings and offensive aren’t air tight: i.e. try your luck with some jabs (with crouch tech OS) and even some LK gekiro
  3. Focus his attacks. His main offensive on the ground is that Sliding normal/Sliding special that gets the knockdown and safe on block at the proper distance. I have certainly caught a few of those and punish accordingly. Also focus is effective for those drop elbows as well. The only mainly two armor breaking moves he has are hozanto (which they usually don’t use it ‘raw’ but rather as combo ender) and the running roundhouse. Some yomi to avoid getting hit while focusing would be the way to go here.

Generally for Gen there are tools to counter Guy. Match-up 5-5 IMHO.
I may upload a video later if its helpful.

Regards
Gecko.

this may be known, but i thought it was kinda interesting.

Ha ha, that’s class!

Ok, off normal xx run > stop Guy where normal is one of medium or fierce then he is at -3, I forget which one it is though. So you can reversal hp hands or jab against that. Be warned that his stupid elbow can beat crane super. Be anti-airing his shit with c.mk in either stance.
Other than that wait for Brennan to get his thing done.

Yeah I found out about the elbow stuffing my goddamn crane super during the FT10 I was like lolwat. Thanks to the both of you, I want rematch that motherfucker and destroy him with Gen, instead of resorting to switch to viper. Guy reminds me of a ninja version of el fuerte. Except more solid all around and he actually has tools and does damage lol.

Also who is Brennan? Second time I’ve seen this name around here.

Dang, Gecko beat me to it. I’ll try to add some stuffs.
EDIT: DAMN, cr0nt beat it too lol! Btw about -3 it’s close st.MP. close st.HP is -4 after run stop.

  • Guy has ZERO air normals that can hit Gen out of his c.MK (active, not recovery frames). It also dodges run overhead, so it’ll most likely be the normal of your choice. Do not try to AA him out of his elbow with mantis c.HP or crane c.HK. While his flip elbow has sucky hitbox, the d+MP one has lower body invincibility, and can really put off your AA timing.
  • Run slide is never safe. It is -5 at best. Punish that shit on block. As for run overhead, you cannot focus 1st hit, but you can with 2nd. It’s very unlikely for Guy to hit you with the 1st hit unless he is at point blank range AND you are standing, so you can abuse that to your advantage. He is -6 on block after run overhead, so punish that shit on block too.
  • Never stand up when he cancels his normals into flip shenanigans. He cannot flip throw you when crouching, and he has tons of recovery frames when he doesn’t input anything. He will be left with only one choice: Elbow. c.MK gekiro that thing. (Gecko already mentioned this, but wth)
  • Do not roll unless you know you are going to hit/FADC. He can punish you with c.LK linked into st.MP. 2 times 1-frame links, but plinking eases that problem.
  • Be careful when you jump in since your air normals will whiff against Guy’s c.MK, which knocks you down.

Moi

hello guys … i am really almost happy with the Gen buffs specially with his mantis tweaks … But(Crane) stance is so crap :
1- Oga is so slow and unsafe :annoy:
2- Gen rolls are really useless normal one unsafe and the EX roll its really useless against shotos and Guile and Dee Jay fireballs !! :arazz:
3- No really good links in crane
4- normals are unsafe like the overhead after blocking against Ken or any three frame Reversal !!
But i can handle most of them and i dont really see them as a really bad matchup for Master Gen EXCEPT one match up against Guile !!?!

Gen vs :lame:Guile :

its a really nightmare match for me i cant deal with him on ground and if i jump which i hate to do that he anti air me with his cr.hp or s.mk of crf.hk … this match its really Gay cant do any thing against him … one of my friend he is really good guile player gives a really hard time i can beats him by chance if i am focus on the game like 120/100 BUT when i lose my hope i switch to my secondary Abel just as a counter pick him which i hate to do :wasted:
specially when i learned all Gen (safe jumps + OS + Oga Cross Up) !!! am really want an advise for this match and i dont want to counter pick him cuz i just like to Play Gen all the time
any tips ? plz

@Warlike: I have uploaded some vs Guy clips. You can see if there are things that you may pick up. Comments welcomed!

@Al Mantis: Guile is so lame I am tempted to unplug my xbox every time I see him. Need tips on him too myself! >:(

Will give some guile tips when I get home as well.

@Geckolimus
i found one good frame trap its good when you pressure Guile or any good defensive char i can share it here >> let say you cross up guile and he blocked then this is what you do after crossing up him(mantis) cr.lk(tech throw) cr.lp then just wait for a less than a part of second then press st.hp > hands or st.hp+st.mp(TC)>Hands …some time its works with me specially when the opponent try to do the (cr.os tech throw) !! its give u a Counter hits which is good some time !!

@ tha messiah
i am waiting for your tips

Guile is not too bad. It’s just a really boring match-up. Neutral jump sonic boom, get within footsie range and back him up in the corner, apply some pressure till you get knocked down at some point >guile runs away again, repeat the mentioned steps. Ugh. I also do a lot of feint Oga’s actually, in order to create some suspense on his part. Or if he is really a dumbass he might flashkick giving me a free punish and a way in. I would not recommend focussing his sonic booms anywhere near midrange because his backhandflip has pretty good range and so does his sweep if he expects you to focus. It is a battle of the patient really. Make him think you’re not going to jump and jump when he throws a sonic boom so he has no charge. Speaking of charge, once you’re in make sure to cross him up a lot because he can’t auto-correct his flashkicks and everytime he loses charge means you have time to get in that shit.

@Warlike
yea i know this match is so boring and i will tell you … he throw sonic boom and i jump neutral then he throws another sonic boom and he walk forward when i jump neutral he hits me with F.HP or dash then cr.hp …
btw i think teiga is useless against Guile !!!
thanks for the information

In the guile match he will want as much room behind him as he can get. Your aim will be to minimise that, and to push him backwards. This will involve lots of walking forward slowly and taking whatever chip damage you have to, and preventing yourself from losing ground. If its safe (spacing) you can use ©2mk to go under booms. This is such a boring match. Just gotta be really on point once you get in to stay there. Good luck!

RE: Guile

Get in that ass. I do everything I can do get right in his face, including Oga feints and Hands-FADC mixup. Oga Ceiling drop is kinda hard for Guile to deal with if he isn’t expecting it. Only jump when it’s close enough to cross up him up, don’t eat free c.hp from him. Neutral jump his slow sonic booms and use the time before he can throw another to inch your way forward.

If you do happen to get in midscreen, you can so roll blockstrings to push him into the corner while still staying close. (M)s.mp>©c.mp>hp roll will build you a very good amount of meter, do good chip, and push him across screen. On block, Guile doesn’t have any normals to punish the roll. If you can set up roll strings, the chip damage adds to your health, meter, and psychological advantage against Guile. Chip damage is extremely important against lame matchups like Sim and Guile.

U2 in the matchup is used to catch ex sonic booms and sonic booms he does when you’re already in the air. It’s supposed to be good for hitting his c.hp too if you can put a read on it.

I recently have been using Crane U2 in the match to catch guile’s who want to create space by jumping up+back after a boom. If you time it well, you can catch them before they land. I use Mantis U2 to punish chip-outs from sonic hurricane and Guile’s corner frame traps/high-low.

If you’re not confident in your u2, i think U1 mantis is good for when you do land that oga and crane u1 is good when you can push guile in the corner and make him jump up+back

It can be bad if he can keep you out, but I think the match is entirely Gen’s when you score a knockdown and stay right in his face. Just bait/respect flash kicks.

You’re nuts.
