you have the standard kit lens right? 18-55? the difference between 17 and 18 isnt that much really. youre looking into ultra wide at this point. if thats the case, just be aware that anything wider than 17mm usually starts to distort (bulge, spherize).
external flashes are useful… just depends what you need it for. i wouldnt invest in it unless you need one. theyre fun if youre using them off camera.
those are some nice pictures, what camera and lens do u use? I really like your nighttime/dawn shot, i havent got a chance to experiment with a shot like that yet but hopefully when i do, i hope it comes out as well as yours =p
i’ve got a Canon 30D w/ grip. my lenses now consist of 50mm f/1.4, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 17-40mm f/4L, and 70-200 f/4L IS. I almost always shoot with the 24-70.
The sunset pic, I took on my way home from work one night. tripod and shutter release helped out. i was on the beach, so it took a few tries - water would come up and take away sand underneath the tripod and it would sink. doh! i took about 10 pics before i couldn’t feel my fingers any more
took me close to 10 years to get those lenses as my set as much of a lens snob as i am (for my own equipment), you really don’t need L series lenses (or their equivalents) to make good images, as shown by the majority of pictures on sites like flickr.
there’s a dude (i wish i remembered who) that has a whole set of awesome photos taken with his digital point and shoot.
It’s nice being at real college where interesting people show up to talk. Neil deGrasse Tyson gave a lecture on “science illiteracy” that was pretty entertaining and informative. I was hoping it would be a little more intense, but it was still cool.
I’ll post up a small batch of the stuff I’ve been doing soon.
