I don’t think stall is done yet. You just have to be sure to carry a Taunt user.
Ironically, I think it makes Stealth Rock more important, since most Defog users are part Flying and will have to switch in often to do their thing.
It makes setting hazards less braindead than simply setting Stealth Rock and calling it a day… You actually have to think and time your pebble dropping like you would if you were using Spikes and Toxic Spikes.
More thinking is always a good thing.
Empoleon is stealth rock resistant, toxic spike resistant, and has defog, and has ice beam which eats Gliscor for breakfast, plus he can set up stealth rocks, I think he might get a tier boost just for that.
Yeah. I was breeding with Masuda method (Japanese Ditto with a Brave Honedge) just to make them produce eggs faster, and of course breeding foreign pokes together multiplies the shiny rate of the egg by 6. It showed up after like a dozen eggs, and luckily had good IVs.
To be fair, past gen stall tactics also didn’t have to deal with Choice items (Gen 3 only has Band, and didn’t have nearly as many abusers as today) ridiculous boosting moves (Shell smash anyone?) and a multiple of new Pokemon introduced throughout the years whose offensive stats, on average, dwarf those of the older Pokemon (not too much of a power creep this gen thankfully)
But maybe I’m just exaggerating. Still though, this is gonna make keeping hazards down more difficult than ever before for me, especially for my pokes that need those hazards to net kills.
Might see a slight drop in frail sweepers who need the rocks to net kos, but it can be played around. Stall can still be successful, you just have to “try harder”/Wesker…
Choice Items? Torment exists for a reason and Knock Off and Thief got a power boost. Embargo, Trick and Magic Room are a thing, too.
Stat Boosters? Taunt and Snatch have been around for 3 gens and still no one really uses them. I thought the whole reason for status moves like Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave were to make life hell for stat-uppers. Roar and Whirlwind never miss now. Malamar is a bro with Topsy Turvy.
Power creep? This is a bit more of a concern, but a vast majority of the new Pokemon have above average defensive stats and there are a few defensive Mega Pokemon(Venusaur, Aggron, and Mawile say hi) that really help in this regard.
I’m not trying to tell you how to play, but to say stall is dead merely because the most broken move ever created finally has actual counters now is really selling that playstyle short. I still believe that Stealth Rock is still an important move by the virtue of so many Defog users being part Flying and the ones that aren’t either have 4x weaknesses to common attack types or lose to Magnezone, who has been a bro to stall since it was still just Magneton.
Nothing is set in stone. Just play to your strengths and formulate a strategy around them. We’ll have plenty of time to see how things play out…
My point is stall’s job made been made harder and harder with each passing generation, and Defog certainly isn’t doing it much favors. And writing off Defog as being stoppable by Taunt is practically irrelevant unless everyone of your Pokes carry Taunt, which is a ridiculous thought.
Of course, that means the user of Defog can’t have hazards either, and having no hazards in exchange for a nigh unstoppable Rapid Spin is quite the risky trade off. No one likes getting messed up by that Sashed Terrakion because you can’t put rocks down.
So we’ll see where this brings us. One thing this will probably mean is the end of suicide leads, which I’m perfectly fine with. That fact people are willing are start the game off with 6-5 disadvantage just to get a layer or two of hazards speaks volumes about them.
