SRK Car Thread (Show it off or ask questions)

I never posted pictures of my mess. Here goes…

I’m looking at the 4 speed gearbox section of my Doug Nash 4+3. Some light rust on some of the gears and an eraser head sized chip in one of the shift collars. Not sure if I want to rebuild the 4 speed section yet or not but I see plenty of how-to guides and videos, so I may as a winter project.

The Doug Nash is a temporary stand in so I can drive the car and shake out the bugs in the rest of it and get it road legal again. The 4 speed section is stout and can handle 450 lb ft of torque. It’s the overdrive automatic section hanging off the back that has plagued the transmission’s reputation since the 80s. It’s a bit of a pig… weighing roughly 130 pounds. The transmission I may eventually use weighs in at roughly 85 lbs and is a true five speed (TKO 600) and uses the same clutch hydraulics as the Doug Nash 4+3. But the TKO 600 cost about $3600…so that’s a ways off. Honestly, I’d rather have the car painted with that money, first.

Hey man fox bodies are sweet, lol. Anyway the M1 had me trippin my dude. The Alpina as well. Man oh man… That collection is too nice. The Bimmers, and the R34 had me trippin out.

questions:

1.) My truck (2000 ford f150 xl) has been making this wind up noise whenever i really step on the accelerator/whenever i reach a high rpm and goes down once it shifts gears. It never use to do this so I was wondering what i should check on it?

2.) I saw someone near the naval base down here driving an r32 skyline. I havent kept up with importing laws and whatnot, so…how is this car on the road stateside?

Okay guys, so I have some bad news. It seems that project “Compact M” has come to an end. I started replacing some things, and I started noticing that there would be a large cost which I am not willing to shell out. So I am just going to cut my losses and sell it. I think I will head over to the Honda camp to see what is up with a possible project car. So I am back to the drawing board, I am hoping to buy a project car in January, so I will be researching to get some ideas. Not sure what I want, but I think it will be Japanese (I know more about those than German anyway). So anyone with some suggestions on a good (cheap) Japanese car then please send em my way (I am lookin at you too FMABB).

Hey man, I need your help. I am sellin the Bimmer, but am open to some trades. Where do you think I should start? Also I may start drinking the Honda Kool-Aid if I find something I like. So any tips of that? I am in no rush, but if you know any spots in Cincy that I should check out, then let me know.

I dont know about trades, honestly. The BMW compact is not a popular car at all, and then add the fact that anyone with a 88-00 Honda pretty much thinks he has gold Like this guy here. If it doesnt run, or run decently, people dont usually mess with it. Most of these people dont have the coin to put into a car to get it running, and most of the Hondas you’ll be looking at are going to be some guy’s daily driver that he wants to trade for another car he can drive every day. On top of that, even if it was running well, you’d pretty much HAVE to get a guy that’s feigning for that specific type of car, and is going to make a rash trade, because TBH, the shittiest Honda of my pics, that EG hatch (I hate, HATE EG hatches) I still would have not traded it for an E36, especially the compact.

My best tip is call Sleeper Autosport in Cincy, talk to Junior, see how cheap he can get it running. He might even have something for sale. Who knows. As you know, selling cars is fickle, that midori hatch I bought in 2005 for $2900. You coudnt buy that TODAY for $2900. Anything that keeps a car from just driving away from a sell, people are going to want a deep discount to point that you feel like scrapping it rather than giving it to some asshole. Alternatively register at mautofied, and post it there, you might get a trade, people make spur of the moment trades that arent in their favor all the time on that site… This kid that works around the corner traded his Eclipse GST for an RX8, then traded the RX8 to that guy for that same WRX that I posted before. That kid that offered the WRX originally, now tried to offer me the RX8 that he got from the kid around the corner(Fuck an RX8 LOL). All through mautofied. Infact I traded that Ceilca for that Integra through mautofied. People get trade happy as fuck on there though. Get a trade tonight, post it BACK for trade tomorrow. You might get a surprising trade offer, who knows.

And then when you go Honda shopping, I pretty much know what to look for on specific models, so, if you want to scoop me up whenever you go out to look at something, that works, or you can post a specific car, and I’ll write up what I know about it. Kris got a Civic a while back, he brought me, I had to test drive it, and teach him stick LOL.

  1. belts, or gear whine. latter could be serious depending on why, especially low gear oil.

  2. its either illegal, or of its FL, they dont give a shit. tons of S15’s R34’s, Lancer Evo, and random shit that shouldnt be here. Or lastly its one of Motorex’s cars.

I was never big on GM as they have always lacked that sense of brawn that Ford and Dodge has. But I’m interested to see the new Corvette and how it competes with the other supercars out there.

And am I alone in saying that the Audi S6 Avant is the best looking car on the road today?

Personally I dont find anything actually wrong with it…but it’s a wagon…so no thanks.

Not a fan of estates/wagons but Audi have been making some very sexy sport edition cars over the past couple of years.

Good lookin out on the info. I mean I am in no rush, but I will check out mautofied and post it up there. I can’t believe you hate eg hatches (I love those things, lol) but its cool, also I have a budget of 2k for a decent tuner, of course I would prefer stock, but some people don’t know what they have at times. Its not like I spent mass on the e36, so I am not trippin. And the car does run smooth, it just runs hot. So I’d rather get rid of it and get somethin that will be more manageable (and I hear nothing but praise for Honda). So I will look into some older integras, civic hatches, maybe a civic coupe or somethin. I am pretty open to some stuff, and I know you will have a better input as far as what I could find for my budget.

Also I didn’t know you had to teach kris how to drive a stick. Man I learned to drive stick before I was old enough to drive, lol.

Some of the best (and rarest) cars on the road today are wagons.

I wish I would have seen this before I bought mine. You’re right fuck an RX-8 this weekend will be my fourth consecutive weekend, fixing something on that piece of shit.

Spark plugs are a pain in the ass to change on the thing, and it’s recommend you change them every 10-15K at about $25-$50 each. If you don’t keep the dash properly lubricated it will start to crack terribly. The taillights on them normally get water leaked into them from the gasket. Besides the performance issues Fuck an RX-8. I’m trying to decide when I sell it which car to get.

A Z4, 328i, or IS 250 any recommendations?

This is a picture of the Dash

I never had any big issues when I owned a 04’ RX8. But the last place I worked at, I knew a kid that had a list of things he had to go get fixed/replaced. It ultimately was too much and had to sell it for what ever he could get for it. Rotary engines are sweet, but they do have their downfalls. I’d still love to have an FD RX7.

The new Corvette will be very nice. Of course, the diehard enthusiasts are pissing and moaning about it on the forums. The new engine code name LT1 was revealed not too long ago. It’s a rehash of an option code name originally used in the 1970 Corvette Stingray, and later used in the 1992-1996 Vettes. As far as brawn goes, GM lost it during the 70s but they picked it back up in the 80s and have ran with it ever since… at least when it comes to the Corvette. The C7 is a culmination of what they started back in 1984 with the introduction of the C4.

Yo man, if I were to go the Civic route, which would be the ones I should look for? I have always been a fan of both the midori and eg hatches, but I would obviously go for a coupe if I went that route. Anyway I wouldn’t mind an integra as well. I always liked those. But yeah man, it looks like I could be going the Honda route. They are easy to work on and get parts for, so I may have to get this poppin.

@Rockman - I say it depends. I am a huge Bimmer fan, so I would go for the Z4 M coupe (I am not a fan of convertibles). But then with that you only have two seats. The 328 is cool, but I would probably opt for the 335i (it just looks sexy as hell). As far as the 250, I am not too sure that they make those with manual transmission. But it really depends on what you want. The Z4 will be the sportiest out of the three imo, so it just depends. But if you like roadsters, I would try to get an S2k because those things are a lot less and can compete without a whole bunch of upgrades.

Well just to be sure, midori refers to the color, which was a one year limited run for EK(96-00) hatches Midori Green Pearl. And I feel you on the coupe route. I think the EG and EK look better as coupes, and only the coupes are available with power windows, roof, ect. Integras are not bad, and start with a B series, which you can build upon.

Also what you want, would be an EX coupe. The EG coupe EX is actually an EJ1, the EK coupe EX is an EJ8. They will come with a SOHC VTEC (EG D16Z6) (EK D16Y8), and power amenities. 2K MIGHT get you an EG coupe with a swap. There are DX coupes EG is EJ2, and EK is EJ6, these bare bones, roll-up windows, no sunroof ect. And if stock will be a SOHC non-VTEC, (EG D15B7) (EK D16Y7) with a looooong MPG geared tranny. With the EX engines, you can throw a turbo on those and get some decent power for cheap. The Integra is a better car objectively, but your budget will get you an LS/GS/RS DOHC non-VTEC B18B1. That is still quite a bit better than the SOHC VTEC, but like the SOHC VTEC, turbo is the only answer. SOHC’s hold about 230whp with turbo, if its not internally built, and non-VTEC B18 can do about 300whp on stock internals. Gearing is about the same for SOHC VTEC, and DOHC non-VTEC. Integra are built better, have better brakes, and have better finish. But of course, most of an Integra will bolt on to an EG or EK Civic. Engine…brakes…seats, even the dashboard.

Honda engine codes are on the block next to the tranny above the clutch slave. But if the car is stock the vin (first 6 will tell you what the car is) and engines should be

EG EX coupe 1HGEJ1 - D16Z6
EG DX coupe 1HGEJ2 - D15B7
EK EX coupe 1HGEJ8 - D16Y8
EK HX coupe 1HGEJ7 - D15Y5
EK DX coupe 1HGEJ6 - D16Y7
DC Integra JHMDC4 - B18B1
DC Integra VT JHMDC2 - B18C1

Obviously these would match if stock, stuff can be swapped around, but you want the EX engines, or better. If you find something with any B series swap, grab it up…after testing it. You find an Integra GSR running…fucking get it.

Lastly a few words:

On ALL Hondas - Honda cancer
On SOHC VTEC’s - Input shaft bearing

And here is a clip of my EJ1 before I put the B16A in it, it had the stock D16Z6 in it, and I threw an JDM Integra XSi ECU on it, and revved to the moon. SOHC are nice because they can take the beating, and are ultra cheap and plentiful if you do blow it pieces.

The first year I wasn’t really having any problems after the second it started to go down hill.

Yeah, I was personally leaning towards the Z4, because I always wanted a two seater. When I was getting the parts I needed for the Rx-8, the guy I was getting them from said the same thing about possibly getting a S2K.

Well I do like the midori pearl color for the hatch, but also I am talking about the years. Basically a 93-00 hatch is what I like (I just have always been a big fan of hatches). I also like the EX coupes, because the body styling, and I know it wouldn’t be too difficult to make it nice along with getting JDM parts and what not. Now sorry for asking a silly question, but what exactly is 'Honda cancer"? And as far as integras, I will keep that in mind as far as swapping parts around. Well I will start looking, and hopefully I will find something that isn’t a bad deal.
