SRK Car Thread (Show it off or ask questions)

I was replying about nice cars in general, but since you asked, my NSX cost 30K. The later models still fetch high prices.

Biggzy has a Nissan GTR, which costs 80+K, and runs low 11s.

i <3 nissan

attending automotive college with next to nothing knowledge on cars really opened a lot of doors for me. I personally like any 300+ HP performance cars. From the muscle car era, world rally cars, gt cars, pretty much any thing that can GO. Right now Im driving a subaru wagon, but itā€™s almost as slow as the 4 banger Ford Ranger I had in highschool, I would like sometime in the near future own a 370Z or a 02 Skyline GTR if I make the move to Japan. I think Nissan has done a fantastic job on the cars I mentioned before.

uti?

nope, Lincoln.

Ahh, they run mid to high 11ā€™s stock

What year is your NSX?

And bah, the GT-R. I hadnā€™t seen where someone said they owned one.

It was a couple years back I believe (2009 maybe) in the car thread. I believe he posted pics as well

GTR, the sound of 5k+ RPM makes me JIZZā€¦ INā€¦ MY PANTS.

still love my car also when iā€™m in the 4k-9k dashā€¦

So I found a car and made a deal, now just have to wait until tuesday when the banks open back up.

This will be the first car Iā€™ve owned thatā€™s worth taking care of so I wanted to see if people had tips/advice for how to do so. Really, nothing is too stupid/obvious for meā€¦Iā€™m one of those people who would get oil changes every 30,000 miles or soā€¦

As far as detailing, I would just take my old cars to the mexican car wash places that went through the hand wash assembly line. Is this okay to still do? Should I ask for specific things (waxing, etc)? Or is it better to go to one of those self-service places and do it all myself?

Iā€™m unfortunately going to have to street park it for at least a couple months probably. In terms of security, are steering wheel locks worthless? The car has an alarm, but I hate car alarms and donā€™t see how one would be effective so I assume Iā€™ll be keeping it off.

Any double din touch video stereo heads people recommend? Donā€™t really need navigation, just want good ipod connectivity, bluetooth, and video camera capability.

What car you got at the end? The civic EX?
Oil change is every 3000miles for regular oil.
General stuff you need to check:
Transmission fluid(it should be red when itā€™s new, if itā€™s dark red go check with the mechanic, generally you need to replace it every 60000), break fluid (clear in color, you donā€™t need to touch it when itā€™s full), coolant(some people call it anti-freeze, DO NOT open the cap when your engine is still hot, IT WILL explode and BURN YOU. Should be clean and filled at the proper level.), tire pressure(very important, it directly affect the life of your tires, the quality of your ride and safety). These are the most basic.

There are other parts need to be replaced during a certain mileage, check with your mechanic.

Professional theft know how to beat anti-theft system, locks etc, but have locks etc is better than nothing, so up to you reallyā€¦the thing you need to watch out imo is that you donā€™t put valuable stuff in your car, at least not visible from outside, lets say you put a nice laptop at the back seat, someone walk buy could just smash the window and grab it. So donā€™t get a fancy stereo system until you can park inside if you are worried/or your area is high risk.

Hand wash places are nice, pretty easy to tell how good the place is, just look at the car that are finished. Mainly there is normal wax (it is applied during the washing line I think) and hand wax. Hand wax are more expensive usually but in theory they are the best, myself is satisfied with normal wax.

I ended up finding a good deal on an 06 scion tc with 50k miles. Itā€™s got the door that goes over the console area so I can hide a fancy radio if I get one. Good advice. Iā€™ve been driving my gfā€™s prius and I wish they made smart keys for the tc but apparently it would be hugely expensive to mod  I still wonder if I should like professionally get the alarm system taken out when I get speakers or something else installed, or just keep it in and never use it. I feel like sometimes there is too much electrical stuff going on in cars (navi, rear camera, steering wheel controls, etc) that makes it easier for things to get crossed/stop working.

hey guys i pretty much know nothing about cars and need some basic help. a friend of mine has a 06 Saturn Ion. Iā€™ve heard they are pretty shitty. well, her SES light keeps coming on. a little after the light comes on her car will shake a bit then it wonā€™t let her drive over 30/35 MPH. she has to pull over and turn the car off. when she restarts it, itā€™s back to normal. itā€™s only happened a few times but she doesnā€™t want anything major to happen. what would the best thing to do? take it to a dealership or take it to autozone and have them run a diagnostics test.

It the car still cover by the dealer? If so go to dealer, otherwise donā€™t because dealer charge LOTS & LOTS of money.
Find a shop she knows and trust, in her case I would find a ASE mechanic this time, ASE - Certifying the Automotive Professional | Home

This is a general rule how a shop calculate for repair/maintenance

  1. How many hours does it take to get the job done (The shop should have their rate visible inside the office)
  2. Parts, shops will mark up the price, which is normal and acceptable unless it is too much, how much is too much? Depends on the part really, retail price is a decent guide line. (Some friendly shop let you bring parts yourselves, but if they donā€™t it is still consider normal)
  3. Dispose fee (if applicable), used oil, tires and some parts needs it.

I am not sure what SES light is (seems like engine light, her problem sounds like a ECU one though), but I highly recommend she take the car to check by a mechanic she knows and trust ASAP. Lights on the dash broad lights up for a reason, they donā€™t go off randomly and cars donā€™t heal themselves, if she keeps driving it chances are it is only going to get worst. For her safely she should stop driving ASAP and check it if situation allows.

Whatever job the shop did for her make sure she gets the signed print out with the details on it.

P.S. If she doesnā€™t know any good shop do the diagnostics test in Auto-Zone. After they figure out what problem is she could compare price for the actual job.

the SES light is just the check engine light. can autozone run a diagnostics test even if the check engine light isnā€™t on?

Yes, you can run it with or without the light on, they just plug their machine to the carā€™s ECU and they will give her the the code. With the code then you can search which problem it is. I think auto zone do diagnostics for free but I am not 100% sure.

Itā€™s a bad sensor.

They will tell you what the code is and make a recommendation (donā€™t know if that is ā€œdiagnosticsā€ or not) Dealerships might try some slick shit and charge you for it (Honda dealer around here does)

Whatā€™s up, fellow driver enthusiasts. Here is my current DD. Makes great for gas mileage. Clocking 34+mpg. My other project at the moment is a MKIV cabrio, ordered some coilovers and BBS wheels that will sit on it very nice. Going -3 camber. And in the market to get a rx7 FC or a r32 for track, for fun. Also have 2 other project cars me and some buddies have been building. 68 vdub bug and a 06 scion tC

Word to the wiseā€¦if your looking for a double din ipod player, bypass the Kenwoods this year. Reports of them being slow due to iPod album art has been confirmed by many (including me)

what sucks about that is back in the day Kenwood was easily the best iPod capable playerā€¦now it lags behind.

Iā€™m sorta on the market now with the new car on the wayā€¦I like my current Alpine, but I kind of want something with GPS built in, so Iā€™m thinking of throwing more money in the pot, but that canā€™t happen for a while.
