Well I have Doom with his beam assist in the second spot, with Magneto Hyper Grav anchor. I thought about using Strider, but Magneto is just a better character.
Well in the end it’s personal preference as always. But seriously, with that team i would run missiles/disruptor. But that’s just me.
Is Viper strong with Tatsu? I’m sure it helps her get people off her aswell as relaunch it’s just that I never see a team consisting of viper/xx/akuma. Any suggestions?
I was thinking about doing Viper/Doom/Akuma myself, it’s just that now that Akuma’s assist scales harder it’s a bit harder to use it to extend damage in combos. The hit stun also doesn’t last as long when used during spacing so you it’s harder especially for a character with ok ground speed at best like Viper to always turn the hit into a full combo. It’s easier to use with characters that have extremely fast aerial or ground movement when it comes to converting off of Marvel footsies into combos.
The potential spacing/defensive boost Viper could get from it I think is a bit outweighed by the changes to the assist and how they effect Viper’s combos and conversions off of it. That’s why even though I thought about it for a bit I ended up sticking with Viper/Doom/Strider. If things go bad you just wait for Strider to land on the floor. LOL.
More realistically though I’ve just been trying to teach myself to burn that meter sometimes for those matchups where you know you’re going to get crowded at the beginning of the round. It puts you at a bit of a meter disadvantage if they block but it’s better than flat out dying. Especially since landing TAC combos with a character like Doom makes it easy to build back the meter.
What DJ said. I wouldn’t bother using Tatsu (unless you want to take the time to learn some new tech that isn’t all to much discovered with that assist+Viper). It’s just not decent for her. Hit stun deterioration + scaled damaged. It’s like doing damage off a throw if you manage to start a combo with Akuma assist. That and it is really hard to convert off of a tatsu assist to start a combo unlike some characters you may know with the assist. (Mags/Wolverine/Vergil/Dante). Viper’s movement is just too clunky for what akuma assist offers on the last hit. I could imagine in blockstun you could throw tatsu assist out there do a heavy TK/feint (no hit) and do a SJF tigerknee burning kick to get a good overhead. The better thing to do with akuma assist when they’re in blockstun is go up to them and do an immediate jumping heavy off the ground. Hit’s most opponents crouched then you can BK/feint into a combo or just BK into a combo. If you keep up with Akuma try gadoken assist. You might be able to find some more interesting things with that. + Gadoken has high priority and slow projectiles help Viper immensely.
I found a pretty decent OS at the start of the round to catch a wolverine team with a happy B-day no matter the assist. I’ve been doing it for a while and its allowed many good results. Plink a backward dash throw into crouch OS. This requires that you know when to press the OS at the start of the round. So no spamming throw. The interesting thing about this is if they ground tech you do a cr.L immediately after into a combo. Between the time of a typical Throw+assist of your opponent when you tech the assist will come out there and be vulnerable between your cr.L to cr.M for easy kill. If you are unsure about the assist and think you will get hit just test it out in training mode. You’ll be surprised how good it actually is dealing with a lot of wolverine’s better retard good assists.
The other thing about that OS is that if they jump at the start of the round you will dash backwards into crouch. From here you know generally what is going to happen. Dive kick and assist. So EX.TK. Do not I repeat DO not just throw EX.TK out there though. You can actually confirm when the assist is coming AND when wolverine will dive kick. I guess I’ve been doing it for so long I just know when the assist is going to come out and they will attack. I get this OS near 100% of the time when I’m playing that matchup. The only bad thing about EX.TK in those situations is you have to burn X factor everytime to kill off both characters because wolverine will be up in the air and be on his way for a soft-knockdown recovery before you can recover. I typically like EX.TK against wolverine anyways.
At SBO there was one moment I used it and I think the commentator called it betting the house but I confirmed it would happen. I wish I could find it damnit. Anyways here is some matches I found at SBO pre tournament against NerdJosh. I think in everyone I actually use this backward dash/throw OS. If the jump you can actually see what is going to happen and can react to it appropriately.

51:28 - I screwed up the air throw after the OS but it is awesome because most people think jump throw immediately at the beginning of the round. That is such a gamble. If your opponent does that then you have a free throw.
53:29 - I did a dash forward/throw OS. This is awesome against wolverine’s sometimes because if you know they jump forward dive kick you will go right under them for free punish. This is awesome for many other cases obviously because it puts the opponent at a disadvantage and you can attack for free.
1:01:16 - Same as 51:28 except successful
1:04:11 - Same thing not necessary but it covered if she-hulk would do cr.H on me then I got a free throw.
Is there any strategy to fighting a Ghost Rider/Mystic Ray? I can only hope to get a start of the match throw and XF to kill Ghost Rider. Mystic Ray covers any approach through the air, and when I try to zone w/ seismos I get hit by j.S. I can’t seem to do anything in this matchup.
I learned the hard way that it’s better to zone Ghost with optic lasers while focus absorbing and dashing through his normals when you can. Viper’s hyper armor on her focus allows her to hold and then bypass the hits of Ghost’s whip. When I first started playing Viper I got blasted trying to the normal seismo and air dash around plan so i know what you mean.
Optic laser (especially with a beam assist) should help calm the mystic ray assist also. Honestly I believe Ghost Rider would have been hell for Viper to deal with if he was in Vanilla. You’d have to have focus dashing and beam assist pretty much at the ready all the time.
I was thinking something with the FA, I just need to practice timing my dash out so I can punish. Thanks man, and good thing I have Magneto for a beam.
Which team do you think is better? viper / wolverine / sentinel or Wolverine / Viper / Sentinel. with wolverine on point i get unblockables with burn kick and short relaunches from wolverines OTG. sentinel is just there too help with Wolverines left rights. with viper on point i lose unblockables but i gain longer relaunches if i pick wolverines tornado claw. or ambigous hits with his cross up slash. that + burnkick for an overhead that leads into a good combo. But i camt figure out if drones is a good assist for viper
Viper can make a lot of use of drones. Unblockable set ups, hovers around the opponent long enough for mix ups etc.
You don’t really lose unblockables with Viper on point since drones can set up focus unblockables any way. Especially on incoming mix up situaitons.
oh thanks. i forgot about unbloclable focus attack. how do you feel about the order tho? viper in point or wolvie on point?
I say Viper on point for the safe DHC.
Viper (Seismo), Dante (Jam Session), Dr. Strange (Bolts)
What do you think? Maybe this team has too little life but ive just been experimenting
Life isn’t a big deal You always have XF, TAC infinites and general combos and resets to up your damage when you need. The bigger thing is to create a team that protects itself from getting hit rather than stock up on bigger hit characters that will by probability simply get hit more often. Look at what won 1st and 2nd and Summer Jam. Lower health characters that could flood the screen with shit and have a lot of opportunities to land solid to high damage.
Strange is not exactly the ideal anchor, but if you’re trying to make a more Marvel 2 style team where you have utility over durp for the anchor than it’ll work.
how do you guys feel about x23 ( ankle slice) / viper (burn kick) / dante ( weasel shot) i was going to have sent with drones as an anchor, but because viper comes before him, he may be meter starved. Dante has an easier time building meter and is imo a better anchor. The only thing i lose out on is easy focus unblockables, its still possible but i have to use weasel shot mid blockstring.
A friend of mine who is picking up the game has decided to use Viper/Strider/Ammy. I saw a couple posts a few pages back saying it was a stupidly good team.
We are just trying to figure out if the order is correct. We’ve made a shit load of mixups and cross up Vajra stuff with point Strider and Cold Star.
What DJ said, plus i’d definitely pick BK assist for viper. The last thing dante needs is an otg assist, BK extends his combos just fine and you can get some almost guaranteed unblockables out of it.
@shadowxcloud
I don’t like x23 in the second spot that much cause she is too assist dependent in general. If you have only one assist you lack either damage or options in the neutral game. If you really wanna play viper and x23 in combination i’d recommend sticking with sent, cause it’s just the stronger assist by far.
@helter skelter
Viper/strider/ammy is definitely the right order and yes, the team is stupid. Viper with vajra is stupid, viper with cold star is stupid, strider with cold star is stupid, ammy anchor is stupid. ^^ awesome team, good luck blocking for your opponent.
Thanks Don. SInce then I’ve changed my team to X23 (Ankle) / Viper (Seismo) / Doom (Plasma Beam). Burn Kick relaunches with X23 are really hard to do consistently so i switched to seismo. Is there any use for seismo in nuetral? so far ive been doing unreliable crossups by calling viper mid-jump.
Thanks a bunch. It really does seem that way and it seems like an effective long term team.
Anyone else have an opinion on this team?
That team does sound awesomely cheap in my opinion! Personally, I’ve moved on from Strider just because I can’t put enough time into learning him as an actual character rather than just a “god” assist. But I think all of those characters work with each other in more ways than one, good assist synergy, good THC synergy, etc. That, and all three of those characters are just really f’n good!
Since I’ve started playing again I’m using Viper (burn kick)/Skrull (tenderizer) /Sentinel (drones) and I absolutely love it. Drones is so sick for Viper and Skrull. Viper can typically get people to have to block or duck under drones and/or get them into the corner, then it’s mixup time. Skrull uses drones to make his shit safe and use metoer smash a little better - and if your opponent freezes right before drones, command grab time.
Viper to Skrull THC is really sick damage - inferno is crazy good for that. I’ve been using tenderizer to try and setup incoming unblockables, but I haven’t quite mastered it yet (anyone have any pointers?) I could use Skrull’s wall bounce assist for combos but I personally don’t believe in using assists for combo potential when it comes to Viper - I think she benefits from lock down assists, pressure assists and get the fuck off me assists much more. Her solo combo potential with a good THC behind her is already good enough to kill most of the cast and still stay meter efficient.
Anybody have any good Viper, Skrull, Sentinel tech to share?
