Southwest 3rd Strike thread: part 2

Getting the thread back on track

To all the Houston players. I’ve been thinking about having weekly/bi-weekly team tournaments. Since we still don’t have that huge of a player base (me and Harvey can only think of 7-8 players of the top of our heads), I’m thinking about having 2 man teams.

So what do y’all think? 2 man team tournaments done round robin style, every Friday. If there are more people interested, I would like to have 3 on 3s.

You know, I’ve been thinking. If you knock down an activated SA3 Makoto, since Makoto has no invincible wake up move, what stops an opponent from just semi-throwing her over and over again until the super runs out?

Makoto is hella screwed if she gets knocked down with SA3 active. She has to either parry high, low, or try to tech a throw. 33% odds aren’t very good. I guess she could also try to stick out a low short in hopes that her opponent mis-timed the attack.

Then there’s also the possibility of the opponent staggering his attack to mess up parries. The opponent takes a risk as well though because if Makoto does guess right, the other player is in a big world of hurt, but the odds are in the player’s favor.

YAY THEORY FIGHTER!!!

ORRR just jump up and parry as soon as you leave the ground

lol theory fighter.

I was thinking more along the lines of 0% since a semi-throw is unparriable. Like Alex’s won’t be as good probably, since it doesn’t knock down, but what about Ibuki’s or Oro’s?

She could jump out couldn’t she? It’d be almost impossible to try and perfectly time laggy command throws like oro’s when she’s waking up.

Makoto’s SA 3 is hella random. I like to think of it like Ryu’s SA 3 or Alex’s SA 3. Either it works real well, or you get screwed. Not being able to block sucks. Getting knocked down and then having to guess on wake up is not good. Therefore, I say Makoto SA 3 is not as good as her other supers.

Theory fighter? Let’s talk match ups if you want to talk about that kind of stuff.

I hear Urien matches up well against Alex. Discuss.

I hate Urien vs Alex. Especially when Alex is standing over him. Alex has soo many options so guessing on wake up can be a bitch. I always end up jumping because I’m getting preasured so Alex players always shoulder (crouching fierce) my jumping roundhouse. I have to rely on tick throws and dash around set ups,guage building and gay stuff rather than just solid ground stuff that should work. When Alex players start charge partioning with the stomp I get so frustrating because I can’t never tell when they really are trying to hit me because they are swinging so much. Plus alot of Alex’s normals beat alot of Urien’s special attacks.

Any theory fighter on Makoto vc Chun?

hwo bout makoto vs ken???just parry like hell?

URIEN vs. ALEX

I think this match up depends on how Urien decides to play. If Urien decides to turtle, then it’s in his favor. Here’s why.

In most of Alex’s matchups, he can play a decent footsies game with st. forward and cr. strong. In this case, Urien totally outranges him on almost every move. What does this mean? It means that if Urien decides to sit back and build meter via st. strong/st. fierce/cr. forward and so on, there’s not much Alex can do.

Alex has to rely on randomness i.e. random EX Slash Elbow, random head stomps, etc. Normally, this would work against most other characters but again, Urien’s got that reach thing going. When fully extended, Urien’s st. strong/cr. forward beats EX elbow clean.

Once Alex does score that knockdown, Urien can be random himself and wake up with EX headbutt. Urien then runs away again, and repeat.

So what if some of Urien’s Aegis combos won’t work on Alex? He can safely build meter and keep doing it.

If Urien doesn’t turtle and decides to move forward every now and then, Alex has a better chance. I think this match up is in Urien’s favor if he decides to turtle. The outcome depends on how well Alex can get in, and STAY in.

MAKOTO vs. CHUN LI

Chun Li can straight up own Makoto. Once Chun Li has one level of super going, Makoto’s options for getting in are severely limited. Chun Li can turtle all day and space herself outside Makoto’s dash throw range, or she can go on the offensive and attack with her MANY ways to connect SA2. Since Makoto lacks a good wake up move outside supers, Chun Li CAN rush Makoto down. High low mixups combined with an awesome kara-throw can wreak total havoc.

However, this is Makoto we’re talking about. How well she does in the first round (beating Chun Li quickly, denying her super bar) usually dictates the match. Similarly, Chun Li’s wake up moves are lacking outside EX bird kick. If Chun Li is being rushed down, I doubt she’ll want to waste meter going for EX bird kick. This opens up a world of hurt, and allows Makoto to work her magic.

If Chun Li can get meter, this match is in her favor. If Makoto can get going, Makoto has the upper hand.

MAKOTO vs. KEN

This match is similar to Makoto vs. Chun Li, but more in Ken’s favor. Ken has a powerful footsies game, so Makoto’s usually method of dashing into command grab won’t work as well. As with pretty much all of Makoto’s match ups, once she gets going, she’s hard to stop.

Maybe Tuan can elaborate more then I can.

Khang pretty much summed up Makoto’s 2 hardest matches.

== Makoto vs Chun ==

Man. This match hurts Makoto. It’s all about momentum for Makoto. She needs to stay on Chun from the beginning of the first round to the moment Chun gets super. Once that happens, Makoto needs to play alot smarter and safer. Chun’s pokes are deadly to Makoto, its very hard for Makoto to get in on a turtling Chun.

Once I get a capture card, I’ll upload my match with Ohnuki’s Chun from Evo. BAH! Bad memories!

BUT, the match is still winnable, just takes ALOT of mixing up, and alot of luck. :slight_smile:

== Makoto vs Ken ==

Pretty much the same thing as Chun, but Ken does it in a flashier way. :lol: He rushes alot better than Chun, and Makoto is helpless after a knockdown. Superior footsies, quick small dash, and easy combos makes Ken so much better than Chun IMO.
What Makoto has to do is to space herself out and not let Ken in, also to wait for an opening and get in. Things like Ken whiffed forwards are opportunities for Makoto to get in. Random DP’s hurts Makoto’s wakeup games too. Once again, its all about mixup.

=======================

NOTE to all Makoto players:
Mix that shiet up! But do it in the safest situations.
She’s random. I usually advise people NOT to play her, because she’s so inconsistent. But man, she is the most fun character to play.

I play ken now.

Period!

can someone please burn me a copy of 3S for DC and bring it up to SG on Tuesday? Thanx so much. I’ll give you a buck or two for the CD.

Try posting this in the Houston forums.

well, with Ken and Chun li, the only safe poke against makoto is c.jab/c.short, with any other pokes makoto can punish it by her rush-punch. That’s why chun can’t just kept on doing back fierce into super randomly against Makoto. I’ll have to say Makoto is pretty even with ken/chunli, maybe with a slight disadvatange. But at the end whoever has the stronger mind game will win.

I didn’t think they just owned Makoto str8 easy. I know I have some grab set ups that people are gonna fall for that I can easily take 40% health with no super with Makoto. Shes too good. If you cross them up and they try to parry your jab just dont jab and cross up into a motion grab. Then she can do whatever she wants…nearly whatever she wants. And for some reason Makoto can dash and do a move faster then like everybody so if Ken trys to keep you out with faggity low shorts,dash in at a safe distance so you can down parry the shorts or dash into a motion grab or a crouching jab. As for Chun Li, I really dont know how that gos we only have one Chun Li player here besides myself so I dont get to mess around with that fight too much to give solid facts. Now days I like sa2 because I can just parry and fierce into it rather then always trying to sucker somebody to come to your corner so you can motion grab them.(Makoto)

I’d go, that’d be sweet.

Hopefully, I can go this Friday and other people will be able to make it as well. Let’s try and get something going here guys!
