I agree 100%, I’m just saying that if we are stuck with only PS2 version forever, then they can atleast make it look pretty damn good as long as they put the work in.

There won’t be any later ports, this is Namco we’re talking about. They aren’t Capcom so there isn’t going to be any flip-flopping regarding their decision. coughRE4 GC exclusivecough
And I choose women based solely on their personality.
no, see when guys say that, they are lying. me, i could give a shit about graphics. thus the reason i play smb3 on my nes more than almost any game out right now that isn’t a fighting one…
But see for its time, SMB3 looked really good and I will argue with anyone who says 3-D is newschool while 2-D is old school. 2-D is simply a different expression of the art of videogames. Graphics matter. A clean low res game like metal slug still looks amazing. It’s all a matter of taste. But the overall presentation is important, my point is that we are reaching the half-way point. Where you have companies stepping forward, but not fully committing to it. Like making a 3-D game without pushing the systems specs. To me there is no point, if I am going to do something, I am going to do it to the best of my ability, but costs/time/etc all come into play.
I would also think that for 3-D, graphic are much more important to the game. That is why we see T5 chars with funky costumes and all that. I mean if graphcis didn’t matter, we’d just have a red block character and a blue block character fight each other on plain backgrounds. The fact is that with 3-D, graphics are an integral part of the system, especially when you are starting to introduce stage damage, weather changes, and other background effects that affect core gameplay.

I don’t see how they flip-flopped considering that an exclusive is a contractual obligation. In this case, all it means is that the exclusive was time stamped (they an release ports after a certain amount of time). Just like the GTA series.
You are right. Graphics have to progress for the industry as a whole to progress. I did not see this until recently. I thought that graphics were killing gameplay and I was pretty vocal about it, but I was wrong. At GDC there was a lot of talk about graphics ruining gameplay, but there was also a lot of talk about hope for the future.
The development kit and tools that are used to produce games have a huge impact on how the over-all game ends up. These tools are just like any others that we find in our daily lives. In the hands of a novice, decent works can be produced under a reasonable amount of time. But in the hands of a skilled expert who knows how to draw every bit of usefulness from the tool, a masterpiece can be created in the same amount of time.
The push is now not so much on game designers to create new and exciting gameplay ideas, but rather on the programmers who make the tools which will be used by the artists, programmers, and other developers to realise the designer’s ideas. Graphics are becoming more complex, but at the same time much easier and less time consuming to create. The development tools that tie everything together are also becoming more advanced and easy to use too, as new companies are devoting themselves to creating good tools for licensing and devopment. It used to be that a developer had to sink a lot of time and resources into a project just to see what was going to be possible and what had to be cut. Now a developer can rely on good quality 3rd party tools that require a fraction of the devlopment time it would take to make custom tools.
A development team that creates all its own tools primarily from scratch is still going to outshine a team that uses only licenced aplications, but the differences are beoming less noticible. I hope that the days when a developer can just spew out some glittery crap and pass it off as a game are almost over, and I hope that the focus can shift back to gameplay and overall quality as the primary focus of development. I can truly say that this is what most developers hope as well, so it looks pretty good for the future.
yeah, true
i guess the idea is that (ignoring money issues), that SC2 wasnt that big a jump from SC1 (maybe a jump backward actually :)) and so one would hope that the jump to SC3 would be really really large. the only way to do that on the current gen systems IMO is to do it on XBox.
For the guy saying Namco only cares about the Japanese market since they are a Japanese company, are you aware that the Japanese game market is declining while ours is going up, which is why SC3 and many other games have come out in the US (and a few, even this one in Europe) before Japan?
This is both confusing AND factually wrong. SC3 isn’t out yet and I’ve yet to see any concrete date for the release. If you’re refering to Tekken 5, we did get it before Japan, but the European version doesn’t even have a release date to my knowledge (Japanese console came out today actually).
And how many major Japanese titles have come out here first? I can think of Metal Gear Solid 2&3 and Tekken 5…and that’s it.
As for the Japanese market…so what? Fact is, they’re making it PS2 exclusive, which makes no sense unless the Japanese market IS the primary factor in their decision. Stop spouting bullshit already, Christ.
arcades are dead and they know it
as soon as games come out on console only a few still play at arcades way more money to be made in the console market
the only reason sc2 did okay in the arcade is because of the long ass time it took them to port it to console
t5 is collecting dust now in our arcade everyone plays at home
japan will prolly get cabinets
i like to play on console better anyway. in the arcade everyone wants to win cause they are paying to play you cant learn anything new, especially if you wanna try a new character
Sony probably paid them.
I don’t.
I don’t think anyone with an IQ over 50 does either.
To me this is a very “Japanese” thing for Namco to do. I don’t think it was a very intelligent thing for them to do long term because Arcades are on their way to extinction in the States and the Japanese ones will likely follow suit at some point.
WRONG. Zig already hit on the major points.
I want to see some numbers, comparing the two before you spout something like that. It’s acknowledged that there are games that come out first in US, then come to Japan later. I know that DBZ Budokai 3 came out in the US first, but that’s simply because there’s a demand for it there. It will sell in Japan regardless, the previous games making Greatest Hits practically made this one money in the bag. A game coming out first in the US more often than not means one thing: We know the product will sell here, let’s see how much the rest of the world will soak up. And the Japanese are getting bolder in this approach as of late. Who would’ve thought Katamari Damacy would’ve made it in the States? Konami went ahead and did it anyway. Hell, Konami initially didn’t know that DDR would sell outside of Asia back in the late 90s.
And Japanese arcades are going nowhere, buddy. As long as their rival, the Pachinko parlor is still in business, there will still be an arcade. I hope you understand why.
All the later DOA games, Resident Evil 4, those are jsut a few off the top of my head, ohh yeah, and here’s your proof http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/03/31/news_6121425.html?tag=lastword_all_headline
Come on seriously, we are stupid for owning a PS2? What if we own every system? I mean PS2/PSX is the single best place to get RPGs on, mostly what I play. I can understand being angry with Namco, but statements like that are woefully unintelligent and won’t do anything but cause people to disregard your opinion.
ssb
Fixed.
Seriously, any idiot can see that the PS2 is the leader in the race. So what if the XBOX is graphically superior? PS2 has more users here and in Japan. “Namco being retarded” would be them making SC3 a GC exclusive.
Online or offline, I just hope they don’t fuck it up. Now I liked SC2 but I have to wonder if in Namco’s rush to install extras that they don’t some how fuck the game up to the point where I can’t get any enjoyment.
Also is it true that there will be no arcade version?
Dude, you should already know that its “COMMON KNOWLEDGE” the PS2 is where the money is at. You got to remember that releasing games on other console is taking too much of a risk especially fighting games. Each games cost money to produce and if SC2 didnt sell a million copies on each console, then they would lose so much profit and as the owner of the company, how would you react to such a incident?? You spent 25 million on SC2 with advertisement and releasing the game on all 3 console, but only made a profit of 6 million back and now you wouldnt be a very happy man for sure. So quit complaining and go get a PS2 and be happy about it. well Zig, if you can help namco increase sales in all 3 console then i would like to hear your ideas.
Only reason why i can think of people even buying SC2 for the GameCube is because Link is there. other than that, most of those nintendo players didnt even know which console SC1 was release on.
the japanese market is not the main market of video games today. If companies knew they would solely make money on japan turf, then they wouldnt be releasing games over sea anymore. My physics teacher told me the United States actually uses 50% of the entire worlds resource. I dont know if its true, but he hasnt lie to the classroom yet.
So far i heard the US was going to get SC3 on console first and then will see a Arcade version coming out. That SC producer mention that the modes their doing requires for the game to come out on PS2 before arcade. I just wonder how long have they been working on the game considering its gonna be release this year of 2005. but who cares, Im actually hoping for their gameplay to improve greatly just like Tekken 5. Thank god Tekken 5 didnt have many upgrade versions like Virtual Fighter and Guilty Gear:tup:
So does anyone know the characer roster for SC3??
That’s kinda funny, I’ve been hoping the whole time for a Tekken 5 evolution. The game has enough good points to warrant an expansion, yet enough goofy/annoying stuff (really poor AI, some minor balance issues) to justify an expansion like how VF4 did.
That being said, my expectations for SC3 are much higher then they are for any Tekken game, since I actually like the SC series.
