You bring up a good point. I’ve also seen japanese players do this. Do you (or anybody for that matter) know how much damage is reduced when you soften the throw? In ST, fierce throw is 34, noogie is 26 + 4 for every hit (I believe). So if you can mash out after two hits, it’s 34 vs 30. If softening the throw reduces 34 to less than 30, then I’m going to do the noogie.
So I ask again: does anybody know how much damage is reduced when you soften a throw? Or is it character specific?
Ryu isnt the best in the game. He is top tier though as I see him and Dhalsim battlin for the 3rd/4th best. People were talkin bout his bad matchups against Balrog Sim and Vega but he also has a bad matchup against Zangief IMO.
Of course Balrog and Vega at the 1 and 2 spots… Ken is underrated as I see him at the upper mid tier Sagat also upper mid tier. I also think alot of people sleep on T Hawk no way is he bottom tier to me and I play with him above average.
Damage isn’t so black and white, if you’re looking at the yoga book…that thing is wrong in a lot of places. Softening throws can cause random damage, I’ve had multi hit throws only take off a sliver of life on the first hit. This is especially true when you have little to no life left, I never do a multi-hit (unless I’m blanka, lol) as a last hit to kill because there is a chance they will survive.
I’m not sure about this, but it seems you can soften multi hit throws also, it seems if I tech a throw like blankas like I would a regular throw, I can get out easier and the first hit does less damage, I’d have to test, I’m at the university atm though.
Unsure on actual numbers, wasn’t something I ever thought to do.
I personally think ryu looses to Sim, Vega, Boxer Geif, Blanka and Fei and goes even with characters like Sagat and Cammy. Fei vs Ryu is a 7-3 matchup in my opinion. Fei owns him on wakeup and from Mid range Fei can whiff crouching feirces and beat fake fireballs and trade with regular fireballs. What’s everyone’s opinion on the Fei vs Ryu match- up?
It’s good vs any charge character IMO. I don’t like the new bear grab, I agree it should be faster than the original, but current version is too fast, but that’s not what this thread is about.
The bear grab doesn’t really give gief a huge advantage it’s just an extra tool he can use. The green hand lets him gain ground and he recovers safely from it from most distances. It’s his biggest buff besides easy spd.
I don’t know much about the other match ups, but from ST to HDR the sim vs hawk match got swapped.
In ST I think the match is something like 8 - 2 or 9 -1 in sims favor.
In HDR its the same but in hawks favor, 8 - 2 hawk or 9 -1 hawk. The HDR hawk dive really made the difference. It adds another way for hawk to get in safe. Sim needs to stop the dive with st jab. hawk can take about 3 or 4 jabs to equal one dive hit. The risk to reward is heavily in hawks favor, he can just spam it till he gets in. after the dive, if sim blocks or if he gets hit, hawk will follow up with a 50/50. take a step forward and spd, or take a step forward and dp. both lead to safe jump spd loop ftw.
also, HDR hawks jump fierce stuffs sims slide if pressed late. if pressed early it stuffs all of sims anti air normals. or you can dive super early to throw off sims anti air timing.
hawks ground game against sim is pretty solid as well. you take a step and block db. step and block db. inch your way in. a novice sim player will back himself into the corner. a good sim player will stand his ground and poke you back with either st forward or down strong. after inching in for a bit, the hawk player should start to see some kind of pattern of what poke sim is using. st forward should be countered with dp, cr strong lets hawk jump in with jp jab or hawk dive. once your in, safe jump spd loop ftw.
What do you think? Of course I’m not joking. You think I’m a troll that only checks these forums for all the funny images in the family man thread??? ;-);-)
Nah man, I was being serious …but, at the same time, I don’t really care if you or anybody disagrees with my post. Everybody’s got an opinion, it just so happens my “opinions” end up being correct most of the time :). Remember when everybody cough zoolander cough though I was an idiot for saying Guile beats Sagat. lol I remember hearing about Daigo’s guile beating Wong’s sagat and just laughing and wondering what HDR players were thinking.
yeah, like other posters have mentioned, these threads shouldn’t be taken to seriously. Who cares about somebody else’s opinion of a tier list?
Anyway, I’m actually kind of surprised a good Ryu player like yourself would disagree (or laugh at?) my past post. For instance, Ryu loosing to claw, boxer, or sim; What’s funny about that? And Ryu loosing to Gief. Sounds like you agree with me there. Right?
About Fei beating Ryu. As far as I’m concerned the burden of proof is on people who think Ryu beats Fei. Watch batches of videos like this It’s old and the players are probably a lot better (or more rusty) but I think the video’s a good representation of the match-up-Ryu has to work WAY harder to win then Fei.
About the Blanka a match up lol. I’m definitely not joking. Maybe I’ll write a post explaining the match ups later; the match up requires a lot of character specific knowledge. There’s a lot of cool technology from random Japanese videos that really works.
About Cammy and Sagat. Just from empirical evidence from tournament results, Cammy and Sagat players do really well in HDR so I think they’re under rated. It’s not like Ryu or Cammy/Sagat have an advantage. So I consider the matchups 5/5.
Hmm, yeah, that’s about it. If anybody feels like debating or whatever holler at me. That’s what threads like this are for. Anybody who feels like being negative for no reason should stick with the HDR vs ST, and cammy vs honda threads though-that’s where you guys belong.
I’m pretty familiar with blanka, it’s nowhere near blanka’s favor. The safe block ball helps blanka, but that still doesn’t stop ryu from doing random cr.mp to stuff every single normal/special blanka has asside from his st. lk, it doesn’t even stop ryu from still being able to do a fireball afterward to push blanka back to be zoned again.
It’s like 7-3, 6-4 AT BEST ryu, his super is still ass in this match aside from shenanigans like doing it on wakeup and immediately into a bite or cr. mk, which is fun to do but you’ll rarely ever get that opportunity vs ryu. Rainbow ball is better but still ass, it’ll still make you eat an SRK or Shoto normal.
Pasky-it’s ironic that you mentioned cr. mp. It really is!!! I used to think just like you. Old school forum members might remember some of my older posts. Anyway, I’ve changed my mind over time. I definetely think blanka beats Ryu. Ironically, I think Ken beats Blanka.
I gotta wake up early tomorrow man. I’m going to sleep soon. I don’t have all day to lurk these forums. I might write a post about the match up later. If everybody writes stupid one word posts there really no point to writing a long post. Plus, i’m more curious about peoples opinions on the fei ryu match up.
intangiBLZ - Cammy vs. Ryu didn’t feel like it was 5-5 when I played DGV and Valle. In fact, it felt decidedly 7-3. Maybe even 8-2!
Cammy vs. Ken I can believe is 5-5 (even tho I think it’s more like 6-4 Ken favor personally) but many Cammy players here have said they think it’s a harder matchup than vs. Ryu, so IDK.
(Note to self: Spam drill if you ever run into Pasky)
