So SFIV is on the 4th update and Ultimate cant even get some character tweaks?

marvel 3 might actually benefit from nerfing everyone into mediocrity

People that wanna see umvc3 endgame i kinda disagree with.

MvC3 is the XvSF of the new engine
UMvC3 is the MvC1

Isn’t this what you want nickguy. One more update to get the MvC2 of the MvC3 series (that sounded weird as fuck)

Well then I’m hoping for too much.

So what is a successful game? Apparently this doesnt work like album sales, where depending on who you are 500k is a success or a failure. I didnt expect fighting games to top a million units by a long shot.

A successful game is determined by how much a publisher expects it to sell. The target for vanilla was 2 million and met that goal. Who knows how much UMvC3 was expected to sell. I remember it sold about 600K in it’s first two months.

Are these companies serious…

That’s old news BTW, Sven mentioned that UMvC3 “continues to sell actively”.

I know vgchartz ain’t the most reliable but according to them MVC3 sold over 2 million. Ultimate with PS Vita port included sold about 30k. Let’s for a moment say that is legit. That’s really sad. They captured less than an 1/8th of their original install base (not including the Vita). That is all the reason not to do an update. What the op needs to understand is they’re going off the numbers for Ultimate. You mention they can dig around others to pay for it. Yes, but RE6 has sold well over 3 million. That is inclination to let them know “hey let’s do RE7”. They won’t take their profits from a successful game and say “hey with this we can patch a game that sold like crap to help it out.” That and the marvel characters cannot be cheap. There’s probably a slim profit margin in this game.

Street Fighter IV had at least a year until Super was released. MVC3 had 9 months until Ultimate was released. Hell, 5 months after the release Ultimate was announced. I remember how pissed I was. I felt 5 months ago I wasted $60 if they’re gonna just release a superior version for only $20 less. The game had no time to sink in at all unlike SFIV. Back in the 90’s they might as well have released Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 in the same damn year. This pissed alot of people off, hence some where like I ain’t buying the game.

This.

I have more respect for UMvC3 because they don’t bitch every time some new shit is figured out. The boys are men, because they deal with it and learn. SF4 players are like, “OMG DIVE KICK IS SO BROKEN CAPCOM FIX IT BEFORE I HIT PUBERTY! WAH WAH WAH”

Are you sure about that?
I am pretty sure that the people who didn’t bitch about the TAC infinites where the minority compared to the people who started asking for a patch ASAP, and don’t let me start with how to this day there are still people asking for nerf for Wesker for example.

Horrible examples on both. Asking for patches for stuff as soon as it’s found is flat out scrubby, especially in a game like Marvel. To borrow from something Mike Z once said, you can’t ask for meaningful changes of one day or even one month of play, no matter how many people are in the lab at that time. Meanwhile, Wesker has long been overshadowed by characters like Vergil, Zero, Doom, etc. In any case, people were still complaining about the 4 gods in MvC2 in 2009, doesn’t mean that the game needed a balance patch.

Well of course they are horible examples (but not wrong). Mixah says that mvc3 players dont bitch about new tech being found but that is not the case. As usual people who wait to see how the game evolves from there are always the minority.

Most of the people that complained about it weren’t the tournament players. They had their dislikes about it (e.g. Justin Wong spoke out about it, for example), but most of the people that went on their tirades were casual players (note: not BAD players, just casual players). The TAC infinite thing was the only thing I had heard of a tournament player complain about, and it was Justin. Then there’s Wesker, which is a null argument these days, but you have a certain famous combo video maker still bitching about it by having a series of 100% combos against the A-Tier-At-Best character.

On the other hand, SF4 gets the complaints AND demands from high level tournament players as well. There’s many more *relevant *(interpret this as you wish) players that complain about SSF4 than about UMvC3.

I think the difference is (And my poor word choice in the previous post) that you can complain when something goes wrong, but you man up and fix it.
It’s like this…

Ultimate player will complain their tire is flat, but they put their spare on and move on. And in the case of MvC2, ten years later, they’ll complain they got that flat tire that one rainy day and everything went wrong that day and blah blah blah… But it doesn’t mean they stopped driving their car 10 years ago because their car manufacturer didn’t fix it for them.

SSF4 player will complain their tire is flat and flood Honda’s (Or any manufacturer) customer support until they finally get somebody who’s sick of wasting their time and volunteers to fix it.

They do bitch, but they don’t fucking whine about it, demanding they get their way.

In the case of fighting games, it’s a minority that needs to be listened to.

I think that part of this behavior comes from the different context of both games.
The vs series is expected to be “broken” (i don’t need to tell you to look at the past games), the players and spectators see those as hype so they don’t see it as something so negative, add that by now many maybe feel that no matter how much they complain they will not get a patch from capcom going by their previous statement, so they simply decided to deal with it, but believe me if they where given the chance to get a new balance patch many (noobs, scrubs, pros, etc) will flood the forums asking for nerfs and changes that they feel that need to be done, i am pretty sure about it.

On the other hand SF4 in theory is seemed as a game where in theory everyone should be on equal ground when it comes to chances about winning, it also doesn’t help that capcom has spoiled their players by constantly patching the game (something that is not necessarily bad imo) but at the same time in every balance patch capcom drowns more the characters more into mediocrity.
Yes there are many people who bitch about the “cheap” stuff on SSF4 (which is hilarious since there is nothing cheap on that game full of subpar characters), but iirc some of the top players who bitch ask for reasonable stuff like bringing some good tools that the characters had on previous iterations of the game that where removed without any apparent good reason, of course i am not saying that all players are like that, there is always someone that is a good player but at the same time has traces of scrub mentality within him.

Sadly is not the case if you want the $$$$$ from the casuals, or at least is what the big wigs think

Combofiend complained too. that marvel is basically convert one random hit into a character kill then make your opponent guess as the next character comes in.

How that game has developed does not look pretty from the outside.

Constant patching is bad, period. AE2012 has killed the hype of SF4, not because it changed SF4 for the worse but because by now everyone is sick and tired of being told that they need to relearn the same game over and over again. Expect the new SF4 to do nothing but accelerate SF4’s death even more.

UMvC3 has too many viable characters to be MvC1

This game should just be called “War Machines and Red Venom vs. Strider Hiryu: New Age of Broken”

Anyone who didn’t see the potential of TAC infs when they first came out is an idiot.

It is the mentality between the two different games. While they fall within the same genre of “fighter” they are completely different. You have to take them for what it is worth. Anyone who has been in the Vs series from the beginning knows that the series is supposed to be over the top. Where Street Fighter series is more of a even playing ground. Checkers vs Chess.

Also don’t forget that Street Fighter is thought as more competitive throughout the world then the MArvel series.
Marvel is America’s game and personally we like the over the top broke aspects of it.

None the less we need to get out of the “OMG it’s broke needs patch” and more forward "(or rather back) to “OMG that was crazy and broken… How can I prevent/beat this?”

One last note, the reason (other then financial) I see Street Fighter getting patched over any Marvel, is because of the feedback of “high” level people or should I say more focused criticisms.
