Except… I don’t know… SNK, who is fully aware of their extensive latin american fanbase and ended up designing a lot of latin american characters to appeal to that audience.
IIRC, Back in the days SNK had a Mexican subsidiary… But not anymore. Times have changed, and piracy is still a major problem, why would anyone care if tourneys are organized or not in Latin America?
It has nothing to do with tournaments. SNK games are widely popular in the region. Neo Geo cabs are cheap and would come with 3 or 4 games in a single machine. That attracted the arcade distributors out there.
I think Capcom said none of the Street Fighter II arcade machines from Mexico were original. All of them pirate copies. SNK games were probably the same. Also, Neo Geo cab days are done, man. Do you think they made any money from Latin America with their Atomiswave releases? LOL, No.
There’s no need to private stuff when the cabs are dirt cheap. Capcom’s problems ain’t SNKs. Last I heard, OG 98 and 2002 still get heavy play in Mexico. Dark Geese would know more than I would.
-what hawkingbird said, neo geo was simply cheaper and had MVS, so the same machine can use multiple games at the same time. The modern arcades have gone in this route too (ring edge 2 and taitos)
-“suicide battery” was a big concern. It was gone just by hacking, and this was in 2007…
-pretty sure since cps2 capcom machines had region lock by colors. You can’t import spare parts or games from other places.
-neo geo received new games for 5 more years than cps3
sincerely, there wasn’t much reason for people to buy cps machines with the popularity of snk there. Not that capcom games weren’t famous, but it was more about snes versions of sf2. The only cps2 that i have seen were all running some mahvel vs series.
I just did a search about this, and people say that CPS2, the board itself, was never hacked. So you are wrong when you say “arcade machines” instead of “bootleg SF 2 carts”. I have no idea if at the time of it’s prime SF2 was easily pirated or not (I doubt so given the common knowledge about the matter) but it wouldn’t surprise me too much either.
Yes they made money from Atomiswave in Latin America. You weren’t at arcades here, I was, there were a lot of XIs.
" [Last I heard, OG 98 and 2002 still get heavy play in Mexico.
In pirate machines."
No.
In fact I would say SNKP has sold way more Taito Type X2 in spanish speaking America compared to North America. There are a good amount of original XIII machines in many places (and a good number of PS3 hacked versions as well), easily besting North America, since you know, arcade rooms are a luxury to find there.
I’ve been all around Mexico, believe me, checking arcade centres, and so far I have never seen a single Atomiswave authentic arcade. There are very accurate pirate copies, that might fool many, perhaps one or two legit maybe, but their conditions so bad it’s clear they were not legally acquired.
When 99% of the machines in the country are not original, it’s clear this is not business for the producing company.
"Also is the South American base of MVS based on actual MVS carts and whatnot...
or is it mostly piracy . Piracy doesn't really count as fan support IMO."
You're right about the piracy and I agree with you 100%,
since I am one of those 'Evil Dumb People' who
are against piracy etc...
But please do not assume that since Central & South
America are predominantly Latin countries you're going
to find B00ts most of the time. It's not like that.
SNK had offices in Central America, Brazil (For South
America), & of course Mexico. Hell they make KOF parties
every year in Mexico, everytime a KOF game gets released.
Yes, there're boots, based on my experience, I have seen
them, but mostly it is original software from SNK
themselves. I remember seeing the MVS stickers, that
some MVS Kits come with sticked to the machines, and to
the technicians' box that used to fix the machines. Every
weekend, when the techs were there, they would be wearing
SNK Shirts, and they would give out flyers, and other part
of the arwork that come with MVS kits. There were even
DEDICATED MVS machines, they were either 'BLUE' or
'RED' not candies, they were wooden just like the
US style ones, just that these machines were mostly
Sit-Down style (But again not Candies). They were
kind like the Australian style MVS machines (You can see
the collections page over neo-geo.com for pics, or
easier, you can just go to hardmvs.com for specific
information).
On a side note
Most b00ts reside in HK, as many people know HK is the
prime city of where you can get b00ts. The US is infested
with b00ts as well. I can assure you that most Puzzle Bobble
machines you see out there are B00ts. Puzzle Bobble
has got to be one of the most b00ted games here in the US.
Hell both of the MVS machines I got came with Puzzle Bobble
B00ts, and the sellers didn't even know. Anyway, b00ts
are pretty much everywhere.
I don’t even care about MVS, there might be many, but still most KOF machines here are pirate copies. But what Atomiswave, Taito Type X2? Those are not cheap machines, and with bad Latin American economy, maybe arcade releases have like 3 or 4 possible buyers in every country, that’s just not a business.
You know how would SNK make sure everyone playing is from the original source? DRM.
