I believe there is nothing wrong with developers jumping on next gen consoles, cause they need games on them. If anything, this new KoF game could appear on previous and next gen consoles because not every developer has made the jump (I think in the next two years, developers will stop developing games for the 360 & PS3).
Since I never played MOTW, I would like to see the characters return in a new game, but not in KoF (Ok, maybe one team could appear). I say this because
Since SNKP is looking for workers, it would be nice to see a small group of them help finish MOTW 2, I mean come on SNKP, it’s been 15 years since the last Fatal Fury game was release, show Fatal Fury some love.
I bought my first PS2 just over two years ago. I just bought a PS3 for the first time a few months ago. I’m practically new to it. Two to three years? It took me five just to get to it. lol
There’s no way I’m getting the PS4 right now (explicit reassurance used by afro americans goes here), nor in the next two years, more than likely. Heck I’m waiting till Black Friday to buy a 3DS, and I actually have the money and financial support to buy three of them scott-free.
Call me a stubborn cheapskate, I call it smart shopping. :x The only exception is for works that I cannot afford not to support directly. It’ll hurt my nerves but I’m buying KOF XIII brand new (and not from Gstop, opening my damn case before I get to) but the PS4 is not worth supporting until I see promising titles and a dropped price. So ultimately…I’ll just be buying someone else the KOF for PS4. XD XD (I hear MonHun fans do this, they’re so loyal)
So my support, at least, wouldn’t go down in the slightest. I don’t know if you mean ‘long term success’ as in their finances or popularity, but in my opinion they go hand in hand. So long as KOF players see what they are planning and want to support them, isn’t their success simply bound by their sales which give foundation for another release?
I mean, being honest here, PS4 watchers don’t consists of fighting games fans, from my speculation. They consist of graphic junkies, codders, Naughty Dog lovers, Gran Turismo faithfuls, and anyone who watches E3 and just makes their wish list based on the big screen.
Even Street Fighter doesn’t fit in that target demographic, so why should KOF follow a market that doesn’t currently exist? Compete where it’s still hot, that’s my argument. Then again, BlazBlue and Guilty Gear seemed to have it out for us right now. lol So maybe you’re right, if we’re just being insecure about things here.
…I am so sorry for turning that into an essay. I’m honestly not ranting, I just have a lot to say about this situation from my perspective.
It has a better chance at being successful by being on the newer consoles. By the time we get a KoFXIV most people would have moved on to the newer platforms. Games that get released on previous hardware when most consumer and developer attention is focused on next gen will be swept under the rug. There’s the diminished console support. In the worst case, online for the console will be shut down which happened to the original Xbox when Live support for it got shut down during 360’s third year on the market. In this day and age, having an online competent is essential to building a community for a game.
Are you talking about fighting games only? Because the PS2’s last 2 years of it’s library and Operation Rainfall both have something to say to you. lol And I’m sure there are many many more.
Okay, a community requires an online component. I’ll be honest, I don’t agree. I think that game communities start at home.
All the way up through school I played games at my friend’s house, or at my house, or at my other friend’s house. Or even at school. There were Halo/Quake LAN tournaments going on behind the teachers’ backs for three months before they found out. Yes they had installed it in every applicable classroom in secret, I hear they do that in every school these days.
Pretty much, having friends builds a foundation for fighting games, in my opinion. I would have never gotten into the original SSB if I wasn’t trying to find a way to defeat my friend’s spam with Link or my younger brother’s Pikachu play. Or Street Fighter 2 where my friend could hadouken like it was nothing and I could barely do Chun Li’s multi-kick.
In fact, I’m willing to bet a huge percent of gamers don’t have the proper internet to even play competitively, because “good” internet is expensive and is often location-dependent. Heck I’ve only played online around 10 times in my life, and my family’s actually pretty well off.
The game not launching on X1/PS4 isn’t thinking with the future in mind. There will be a time when we don’t think of the PS3 and 360 as current gen consoles. And with the case of Microsoft consoles, arcade sticks aren’t backwards compatible. The game needs a next gen release to remain relevant a couple years down the road.
this time they’ll need careful planning. they might have got away with the netcode in KOFXIII, but repeating this in subscription based PS4/XB1 will not be easily forgotten.
Probably a reason Capcom do not release USF4 on PS4/XB1 yet. the backlash from the state of the current netcode would be bad for both Capcom and Sony/Microsoft.
To be true, I don’t think SNK can even think about the future. They don’t have enough money to launch the game in 4 different consoles, I think they’re gonna pick the ones their game can sell the most in, PS3 and X360.
That last sentence. XD XD So if they make a release for a “dying” console instead of immediately jumping onto the newest console right when everyone else does so then they won’t remain relevant? If it’s that bad then they aren’t relevant to start with. Faithful fans will come back to their games after ‘a few years’.
So you’re basically saying Street Fighter >>> KOF, because they just released Ultra for the PS3, instead of the PS4. =_= I guess Street Fighter won’t be relevant in the upcoming years. And if we’re talking revenue, that’s still jumping the gun. We don’t even know if they have the money to develop a “next gen” fighter, and if they undershoot it’ll be a crap game.
That doesn’t indicate shit. You know that they’re making profit from pachinko/slot machines and mobile gaming (cause you should know that’s hot in Japan). If they didn’t have money, then why the hell are they looking for workers and making a new game then?
Where in his post had the slightest little bit that Street Fighter was better than KoF? FYI, Ultra didn’t get a next gen port because according to Ono, there wasn’t enough money in Ultra’s budget for next gen ports. It doesn’t matter in Ultra’s case as it has a PC version. PC can sustain the game once PS3 and 360 run their course.
Yes, releasing stuff on a dying consoles will make the games less relevant. Consumer and developer interest would have moved on to the newer consoles leaving what’s getting released on old hardware go unnoticed. In 2 or 3 years time generally people of can’t afford to upgrade or have no interest in the newer consoles will hold on to their old machines.
They released Ultra for the PS3 while the PS3 still had a player base and a ton of people still on it.
By the time KOFXIV becomes a thing, that will no longer be the case. KOF is not being released NOW. It’ll be released a Year+ down the line. Releasing it only for PS3/360 is extremely short sighted.
We aren’t talking about the next 6 months. We’re talking the next I’d wager 18 months, possibly more especially if they do an Arcade release first. By that time, PS3/360 will be officially in the rear view and not viable to develop exclusively for.
On top of that, lack of competition. By the time it releases, it’s only competition will be from Xrd which is still somewhat niche, and MKX which will likely have been out for a few months minimum so direct competition isn’t hurting.
There’s absolutely no reason to develop solely for this gen. If they can manage it, it wouldn’t be a bad call to pull a Xrd and release on both gens and do cross play, but if they have to choose one it HAS to be PS4/One.
It’s also clear SNK Playmore is now much more focused in the safe business of pachislots machine and they don’t give much money to their video game developing area. It seems like this KOF XIV or whatever is called it’s taking them a very big effort to put together, I don’t think their video game division is looking very healthy right now.
Although, on a superficial level, it is a bit sad to see SNK go in this direction, we have to remember that they never were the largest, richest or most popular company. The yearly KoF releases were amazing, especially at that level of quality, but we all know how sustainable that proved to be. They haven’t declined as much as they’ve simply come down to earth. If they weren’t handling things like this, they would spiral towards a situation similar to the one they were in about fifteen years ago, and possibly another collapse. I prefer a few releases per decade from a relatively stable company to frequent releases from a hopelessly self-destructive company. Besides, XIII is good enough to hold us off for at least another year or so.
