I will say that having played Snake a lot on XBL I can say that he knows the Gief-Honda match-up very, very well. Even if he had faced a bunch of Hondas unless they were top level Hondas (like Thelo or Kurropi) he would have crushed them anyway. Even against good Honda mains, the Honda player has to play very smart and can’t really afford to make any mistakes against him(trust me I know, LOL).
Props to Snake for winning and for his skill, regardless of match-ups. It always help to have some luck in tournies, but you don’t beat the players that he did without mad amounts of skill. Congrats.
Just wanted to confirm that, we unfortunately only played two games, and he did win the first one. That was enough to make me a believer. I actually sidebet on him vs Tokido, and he delivered the goods in style.
Snake Eyes made a BIG splash in the HDR tournament scene at WCW2.
He got 2nd in a field that included some of the top HDR names. (inlcuding 1st, 2nd, 3rd, at EVO 2010)
He lost to Afro’s Dee Jay and Boxer, though it was fairly apparent in the finals (vs. Afro’s Boxer) that he did not have the matchup vs. Boxer down at that time.
Here was the WCW2 Top 8
Afro Legends (Dee Jay, Balrog)
Snake Eyez (Zangief)
Alex Valle (Ryu)
DGV (Ryu)
Aqua Snake (Fei Long)
Count Fuddulous (Dee Jay)
Mongolo Robocop (Chun-Li)
Blue Tall Can (Blanka)

And many of us know (and have spoken) about Snake Eyes having a monster Zangief from our playing against him on XBL.
You see his name pop up in the “All Star” thread for Zangief: http://shoryuken.com/f343/hd-remix-all-star-team-214641/index9.html
And we’ve seen MANY people experience Snake Eyes’ amazing skills and cry TURBO!
So he was definitely on the radar.
And speaking to the pad, Royal Phlush used a pad to win MWC 2010.
I agree.
Zangief surviving a large field in a non-team tournament is just something that has just not been seen. (in HDR or ST)
So his wading through the sea of players that is EVO is monumental.
Oh, I think the top 2 expected characters were definitely Ryu and Boxer. (just based on who was gonna be there and what characters have done well in past tournaments)
I’d go as far as to say this was the first major feat from a Zangief player in USA in all SF2 franchise since Kuni Funada defeated the legendary Tomo Ohira once in a tournament. He placed first, FFS.
Wow, that’s amazing. Snake Eyez beat Cole’s Dhalsim convincingly in casuals (8-0) and won the majority of casual matches vs Sirlin, yet Sirlin double eliminated Kuni in tournament play. Not to mention beating Thelo’s Honda and other great players. I’m starting to believe, but someone please post vids of the casuals and pool play so I can see how he beats Honda. I would love to see how he handles Torpedoes, Slaps and meaty tick setups.
Why is anyone surprised about Snake Eyes playing on a pad? The whole point of HDR’s “dumbed down” inputs, for lack of a better term, was to cater to people who play on pad. And besides, DGV(s) played on a modified SNES pad for years, just as convincingly, if not more so, than on stick now… Whatever works for you works.
Also, does Kuni play this game at all? I keep seeing the comparisons, but we’re talking about 2 different games here…
"Ehonda
I want a Money match with Snake eyes Gief vs my Honda, First to 5 wins in St and HD total winner takes the pot. So if Snake eyes wins in HD in 5-2 i must win in at least 5-1, if its 5-2 its a tie if i win 5-3 in ST i lose!"
This… what’s going to be the tie breaker decision? Because it’s probably going to go something like Ehonda 5-0 in ST, and Snake Eyes 5-0 in HDR.
The best part besides Zangief winning is that all the people who accuse him of cheating can STFU now, this includes my frustrated ego. In the back of my mind was dude has to be using programmable controller haha. This is great motivational tool to help me level up my gief. Also, lets not forget evoanon making 9th…
As for Cole, im not sure if he plays HDR that much. His main focus right now is trying to make Seattle top tier w/ SFIV. HDR is pretty much dead here in the NW despite having great players like Cole, zass, axel, & BBH just wish there was an HDR community but damn that SFIV!
Good thing there is still online, i have a plethora of amazing players to play daily. I hope more of the ol school players get back to HDR online. SF2 must not die!
it’s not about playing on a pad, but more like winning evo and being a pad user. there’s alot of people out there, arcade and old schoolers especially who looked down on pad players as if they were never gonna be able to compete with people who came from arcades (back in tekken tag days, i remember arcade players looking down on jop, the ogre player cuzz they heard he was a pad player - but he proved his critics wrong then). i think you’ve even seen the threads around of “making the transition from pad to stick”, as if that will improve your game, or as if it’s truly necessary to reach “the next level”. snake eyez winning, i think that shows that it doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. actually, imagine if mad catz (or somebody) sponsored this guy with some kind of pro pad. prior to him winning this tourney, that would’ve probably made a good amount of people laugh, like - are you serious?
let’s go even further, imagine if evo had already allowed people to use their own controllers back then. (there was a point where they were arcade cab only, before making the jump to console). dgv would have probably made an impact sooner. he only recently started adjusting to stick i believe fairly recently (within the last few years or so). and i believe he spent some time just adjusting to stick (and it might not have necessarily been a quick adjustment either).
there’s alot of people out there sharpening their skills online and just through watching youtube (and some of these are no doubt strictly pad players). you just can’t under estimate anyone any longer.

You’re right that you can’t underestimate anyone (even a keyboard player could be good!), and pads should not be frowned upon by anybody. Everybody should play what they are most comfortable with, and ignore the nonsense coming from other people to use something else. I have a unique perspective when it comes to pad or sticks, since I originally started playing SF2 on stick, switched to pad for 10 years once the arcades died, and recently switched back to stick. I prefer stick cuz it’s what I’m most comfortable with, but there are some pad players that are simply amazing (option selects, Super combos, everything).
Being a pad player myself, I find the limitation to playing on pad is that it is hard to mash out of grabs. Whereas with a stick you can just freely and rapidly, uh…jerk the stick (for lack of a better term) back and forth, you can’t as quickly or easily mash out on the pad. I’ve tried the alternating u/f and d/b with the pad, but I can’t seem to correctly do it. So in my opinion, if stick really does have an actual advantage over using pad is to be able to lessen damage on grabs.
Pianoing - you can’t really do it on a pad - this effects reversals, and things like Guile’s combo into his super. You can do pianoing with two buttons only, but how much does that help?
Stupid special move inputs - like lightning attack - pressing A and Y at the same time without hitting B or X is almost impossibly. You need a stick.
Many pro players have told me that you use a stick for the buttons, and not the stick itself.
From all I’ve seen, and being a pad player myself, I believe that what they say about the buttons is true.
I see what your saying, but my good friend Wolfkrone shown you can piano on pad by play C.Viper. Pad players have been around for decades. It just we are finally accepting them, now.
I can piano with 3 buttons, i use a DS3 and i map my buttons to a more confortable setup, i use arcade stick too, but let’s talk about pad:
I dunno nothing about guile’s renda cancels or super cancels, but i can renda and super cancel with ken like this:
2.1 :d::lk::lk::qcf::qcf:::lk:–>:p: for a renda cancel with 7 hits super combo or
2.2 Jump:mk:, crossing her/him up, then standing :hp::qcf::qcf::p: for a super cancel with 7 hits and about the 80% of lifebar.
The only game that i can’t play it in a decent level is SSFIV because i can’t play it well with pad, the FADC to Ultra is so hard for me with pad, so stick for SSFIV for me please.
I can piano on a pad very easily. Pick up your elbow and piano your thumb across A-B or X-Y.
Also, the nice thing about Pads is that you can reconfigure the buttons. The default layouts for pads are pretty terrible; the best way to set up pads are to put Light Attacks on the shoulder buttons, and hard attacks on the front panel (where Square and Cross are on a Playstation Pad). Suddenly, lots of things like Lightning Attacks/Drill Claws, Roll Cancels, Kara Throws, Plinking, Pianoing properly from Hard to Light, etc. are not so far-fetched.
