Snake Eyez Takes It!

there are limitations to playing on a pad. i am in no way taking anything from snake eyez for his accomplishments nor am i bagging on my favorite game.

shaking out of a grab is a good example of the advantage of using a stick. dashing and dash cancelling is another when it comes to a game like tekken. again, i am NOT taking anything away from snake eyez and hdr. also, i’m not saying there aren’t good pad players on tekken. i’m just saying that stick players will have an edge when it comes to overall movement in a game like tekken when dash cancelling plays a large role.

just watching high level korean tekken matches shows what i’m talking about. the characters look like they are being shocked but really the player is dash cancelling and side step cancelling constantly and at a vigorous pace. overall, for all fighting games, i still feel stick players have an advantage. this comes from over ten years of playing on both mediums. again, i’m not saying a pad player can’t win, i’m just saying the stick player has an edge.

I have been playing on pads for years, I played SF on consoles, not at the arcades. And yeah, I piano on my Xbox360 pad, for example, A, B,and RT when I do Blanka’s upball. Some players go pad and some go stick. I remember when Ricky Ortiz would laugh at players who brang their pads to a tournament. Well, look at the very good Zangief player Vangief, who almost beat Ortiz with a pad, the same player who beat Justin Wong on a PS3 controller. And even the commentators were impressed with his surprise dash forward->720 supers on a pad.

I think people underestimate pad players, because they are so used to stick players at a high level of competition. And of course, lets not forget Snake Eyes winning on a pad, wrecking everybody not only on the tournament, but on a player room as well, beating top players like Jason Cole for example. Snake Eyes Winning Evo with only Zangief on a pad is something I am very proud of, because I play on a pad as well

Vangief and Snake Eyes, both great Zangief players, and both pad players, and they owned

Pad players are a minority in the fighting game world, and at Evo2010, they showed their wrath. This is the year of the pad (lol)

i configure my DS3 like this:

Square: jab
X: short
Triangle: Fierce
Circle: Roundhouse
R1: Forward
R2: Strong
L1: Strong
L2: Jab

So… when i piano looking for a srk i press: R2, Triangle and L1 for a piano input, i use to make it twice to have 6 chances to pull off a reversal, is a very confortable setup for pianoing.

For an upkick reversal(when i play dj) i press: R1, Circle then X, pretty easy!

I think the stick/pad thing has more to do with where you learned how to play the game. People out of the arcade culture are accustomed to sticks. We’ll probably see more and more successful pad players in the US as the games move out of the arcades here.

A pad or joystick is only as good as the player behind it. I’m definitely a joystick player, but I know some folks that use a pad and they’re great, too. It’s all about what works for you.

I don’t get why you can’t dash cancel on a pad, or escape a grab on a pad…I can do all those things just fine.

Moving your thumb left and right is easier for me, than moving my entire hand left and right.

nobody ever said people can’t dash or dash cancel or escape grabs on a pad. i was saying that a stick has its advantages over a pad.

if you take a stick and wiggle it back and forth as fast as you can, and then do the same on a pad, you’re likely to get more inputs on the stick than you would on a pad within a ten second interval. likewise, if you repeatedly do a circular motion with a stick and then try the same thing on a pad, you’re more likely to get more inputs on the stick than the pad in a ten second interval. those are two boneheaded tests you can try out for yourself.

if you’re not comfortable with a stick, don’t use it. if you’re not comfortable with a pad, don’t use it. you can reach an elite status with either one, but the stick is more advantageous. yes, snake eyez is an elite player. yes, i have lost to pad players with a stick. yes, i have beaten stick players with a pad. again, overall from my experiences of using BOTH a stick and a pad the stick has the edge over the pad. there is a reason why the top players in asia all use sticks.

its probably cause they play in arcades moreso than at home/on a console.

Whatever makes you win.

More like it is because they play in arcades more than on console.

pad thing is nice but how about an online player winning it? I get to many excuses by people saying Gief cant get away with that crap offline, etc…

xoSNAKE EYEZxo would have won Evo regardless of who he faced, which is precisely why I predicted he would win. (Ask Kacom)
He makes the Honda-Zangief matchup look like it’s in Zangief’s favor! xoSNAKE EYEZxo is the new Evo Champion of HD Remix, period.

i was hoping that he would win and knew he had a shot. i’ve seen the way he plays against everyone (honda and sim included) and he’s comfortable against anyone with anyone. my only real worry was how afro beat him in wcw. nonetheless, he won and in the manner that he won, there is absolutely no argument as to who the man to beat right now is.

Yeah man. I found it much easier to play Gief offline than online. There is actually time to react when there isn’t lag ^_^;.

Sirlin has a nifty article up about his experience with Snakeyes: Game Design, Psychology, Flow, and Mastery - Blog - Evolution 2010: The Miracle Man with?Zangief

Edit: Thelo beat me to it

That article is disgusting and insulting to all who play ST. How can you be so naive as to measure snakeeyez’ HDR performance against legendary ST players. It’s like giving someone a rocket assisted aluminum bat and then putting them on the same level as Hank Arron when they set the home run record. Zangief doesn’t work the same way in that game. As he is now in HDR is comparable to Abel in SF4, aka fucking retarded. I stated that Zangief was too powerful at the first Capcom Fight Club in NYC, and again in the podcast 2 weeks before EVO. Being good with Zangief in HDR is not amazing. Being good with him in ST is. I stopped playing HDR a long time ago. Playing it again this past EVO really opened my eyes to just how intermediate friendly it is. Shit is baby zone! For the record, I’d rather fight o. sagat and vega in ST than zangief in HDR. Faster green hand, faster hop, and faster running bear grab make it too easy for him to get in now. Combined with the new easy SPD motion its just stupid.

Oh boy…

Ducks for cover

Well I agree that his new SPD motion is really, really, really, really, really, really, really fucking stupid, seeing as the 270 isn’t even hard to pull off in the first place (pad or stick), and almost everything else in your post, except comparing HDR Gief to O.Sagat is… lol. Let me get some of that stuff you are smoking.

Someone is mad salty it seems.

congrats to snake eyes and dgv for a very entertaining fight. I had picked dgv to win the match. I’m sure he’ll get his revenge some day
