Smash Brothers - winning formula no one uses?

Why does that matter? It wasn’t designed for high level play, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t suitable for high level play.

shrug Well my initial impression was that someone was going to explain why SSBM is inferior to traditional fighters in terms of depth and competitive viability. This is just opinion, which I’m fine with. It’s stuff like “smash bros is a traditional fighter with training wheels” that doesn’t make sense to me.

That’s pretty much irrelevant to its depth though, isn’t it? I mean, what if ST characters were all, like, Looney Tunes or something? That would change nothing in terms of its actual gameplay.

How many times am I going to say it? smash isn’t a FG. So how can I explain how can I compare it to any other FG when It’s not in the same category? it’s apples and oranges.

wanna compare mortal kombat to final fantasy?,be my guess.

You don’t have to compare them, I just want you to explain why SSBM, fighting game or not, is so horrible as a competitive game.

depth depth depth. So what? every fucking game created has depth. You should know that, but since you think smash is a FG,I’m not surprise.

Hell resident evil alone requires more depth and skill then smash alone, try going through the whole game with a ust a knife.

Also, depth doesn’t make a FG, a traditional FG system makes one.

I’m talking about competitive depth. As in, the same competitive depth that allows traditional fighters such as Street Fighter II to stand the test of time (on a side note, SSBM has lasted on the tourny scene for seven years so far. Not bad if you ask me) on a high level of play, in tournaments.

Difficulty does not equal depth, or I could just tell you to play upside down and with your eyelids and say that smash bros is the deepest game in history.

It’s not just the execution.

Compaired to say a 2D fighter where you don’t have too much room to move around in, in Melee you can have a huge amount of space. Wavedashing increases the spacing even more with quick bursts in one direction or another. Thanks to this, you have to be really weary of your opponent and what he’s thinking. It starts to go into what’s the best way to attack your opponent, from the air, from afar with projectiles, the stuff we usually see in 2D fighters, but the movement and spacing is so vicious and quick in this game unlike I’ve ever seen or played before

You totally don’t have to be on the offensive either for Melee, I’ve been destroyed by people who played their spacing game so well I just couldn’t get in, they only counter attacked me

It’s much deeper than it looks, not to knock on anything else

The depth is just I haven’t found a fighter that gives you more options at once, thus Melee is my king. Yeah I’ve been playing and trying just about every 2D fighter out there from 3s to SS2 but something about Melee just gets to me

Any game can be competitive, shaq fu can be competitive, doesn’t mean the game is in the same category of being worthy in the section of SF, MK, Tekken, so on…which us true OG love and enjoy.

Are you retarded? I’m getting serious retard vibes from your post. Just because Smash doesn’t have a traditional system doesn’t make it any less of a fighter or a competitive game in general. The fact that we have a Smash section here should tell you that it’s a fucking fighting game. Perhaps you should just give up now before your get raped by the SRK community for your stupidity.

Why are you dodging my questions? I just want to know why you think SSBM is apparently so vastly competitively inferior to Street Fighter etc… I don’t care whether it is considered a “true fighting game,” that doesn’t matter. And don’t tell me “it’s comparing apples and oranges,” because you just said that it “isn’t worthy of being in the section of SF” etc…

Though going off of Darkshine’s post you’re not representative of the community as a whole, I’m still curious as to what your reasoning is >_>

l-cancelling is like the only thing in melee that was needlessly difficult and it wasn’t even difficult. Wavedashing, pivoting, moonwalking, etc. all added new strategies and new approaches and if that doesn’t add depth than I don’t know what does. Playing Isai’s and Silentspectre’s captain falcons are a lot different than playing someone like G-reg. Ken’s marth is different than Mewtwoking’s, Aniki is vastly different than Germ, DieSuperFly and Forward’s sheiks are like night and day and I can go on and on and those differences are largely on how they implement wave dashing, moonwalking, pivoting, needle canceling, etc. so they clearly don’t just add technicality they offer depth and a wide variety of play styles. I’m not a huge fan of Brawl but people still hating on Melee need to get off their high horse cause the general population thinks we’re all idiots for playing fighting games in the first place. We need to stop all this fighting game on fighting game crime and focus on the real evil, that being halo and all those other crap console FPS games.

You tell us buddy, your own scene can’t even come to grips with how to play this random ass game.

Easy, we are in america, land of the " scrubs wanting everything easy"

And like dude said before if it wanst on nintendo, kids wouldn’t even dig to find the game on lets say ps2/ DC. Seeing that PSX, and Dc has all the traditional FG we play today, kids would realize the difference between smash(party game) and Real FG

plus, the game is rated E,so parents wont mind getting there kid smash over SF or MK.

That’s only there because

  1. It makes evo money, seeing the fact that the smash community are full of kids that cant handle a real fighting game.hell i would add a smash section if it put more money in my pockets from scrubs alone.

  2. Just about every smash thread gets closed in the FG section, more then anything.

I’m with you on this one buddy.

  1. But WHY isn’t it a real fighting game? You’re just throwing shit out without backing it up. If you can present a coherent, logical argument, then maybe I’ll care about what you have to say.

  2. Just about every Smash thread gets closed because most of the Smashers are idiots.

Disclaimer: I’m not a Smash player. My favorite game is Third Strike. I’ve no bias towards or against Smash.

street fighter is to smash what quakeworld is to halo

Shitstorm incoming…!!!

Wait, people are saying Smash isn’t a fighting game?

From wiki, the definition of a fighting game.

The article then goes on to list the elements of a fighting game which includes taunting and special moves. Conditions for victory listed are Knock-out, ring-out, fatalities, and sudden death. I’ll include time outs as well.

Let’s see what Smash has:

  • Players facing off against each other or against CPU controller characters in close combat?
Matches can 1v1, 2v2, free for all etc. (Check)

  • Players are of roughly equal power to their opponents?
Both players start at 0% damage or 100% life. (Check)

  • Life bars? Odd number of rounds?
Your life bar (It’s more of a damage meter) is % based that starts at zero and increases up to 999% as you take damage. In order to deal damage you have to attack your opponent. The number of rounds is how many lives you start with at the beginning of the match. I see most tournaments use 3-4 lives per character so it’s a best of 5 or 7.

Other elements of fighting games:

  • Taunting? Yes you push the directional buttons

  • Special moves? Yes. The B-button and you get 4 special moves.

Victory conditions: Most Smash matches are won by ring-out. As your opponent’s damage increases the easier it is to knock your opponent out of the ring. Victory by KO can also be set with options. You can give each character say 300hp and it decreases as you attack them. Winning by timeout can also occur. The winner with the lowest damage taken/life lost will win after a timeout.

Sudden death will occur if both players end a match with the same health or number of lives remaining (consider it like a double KO).

With all of this taken into consideration how is Smash not a fighting game again?

EDIT: I just want to add one more thing. Do you think it’s stupid to tell an engineer or an architect how to design and build skyscrapers or tell scientists that you don’t believe lightning is made up of electricity if you yourself have never gone to engineering school, designed a freestanding structure or written a peer reviewed academic journal of electromagnetism? How is that any different than saying Smash has no depth or strategy or whatever if you yourself have never played a high-level match against top competition?

Just saying guys. I’m not a Smash player either, but I’m trying to bring some sense to this thread before it gets locked.

Another note. Since this is SRK. Am I right when I say most of you would bring out the flamethrowers if some “scrub” came in and starting talking about why he beleives games like Marvel and Street Fighter aren’t real games and no one cares about them. Wait, didn’t that happen when someone made a thread that linked to some youtube video where some “retard” said the exact same thing? Hypocrisy is a two-way road. You don’t like a game fine, but don’t shit on threads started by someone who had good intentions.

factstorm

Don’t be ridiculous, I’ve stated multiple times that I’m talking about Melee here. Why did you even post if you didn’t read what you were responding to?

Well yeah, I’m not gonna ask you again, I’m giving up now as this is like the fourth or fifth time you’ve avoided my question and ranted about something else entirely.
