any game that has a vs mode Players are of roughly equal power to their opponents.
players can face off in any game 1v1 in plenty of non fighting game that also has a vs mode.
If you got this impression, it’s likely from internet drama. It’s not really all that true. The smash community has thousands of random people, but the people who can actually place decently in a tournament all seem to share very similar feelings.
So they don’t play with items, who cares? The game with items and without is night and day, and if there’s competition for items off then that’s fine with me.
As far as wikipedia is concerned, they can go to hell. Smash may be considered a fighting game because there is some sort of life bar and you are trying to kill the other player. The difference is that you have to ring them out to kill them. There are plenty of mixups, counterpicks and matchups, offensive and defensive options to make it worth playing competitively.
Also, therte are technically items on. Peach’s turnips are an item she can spawn, so are Link’s bombs.
Don’t worry about it too much Kristoph. Some people can hate something, that something being a video game of all things, so much that it prevents them from having a real discussion. It’s like listening to Hitler give a seminar on the various contributions Jews have made to the modern world.
I already outlined why Smash should be considered a FG so hopefully the silly argument that says it isn’t doesn’t show up again.
Jase: Are you going to counter the conditions for victory too or just choose what’s convenient for you? You didn’t bother to counter that players are of equal power, which separates Fighting from Beat 'em ups. Since when was Joe or Bill the same strength or given the same amount of health as Hagger in Final Fight?
What? Points? You mean more life stock? Those are the same as rounds. Say each player starts with 4 lives. Everytime you knock your opponent out it’s like you winning that round. Once you’ve killed your opponent 4 times you win the match. How’s that any different than a best of 7 rounds match in another FG? The only difference in that the damage you’ve already taken is carried over to the next round.
Whatever though, I’ve read people give real reasons why they don’t think Smash is the same as other fighters before. You on the other hand are just looking to troll. I don’t think you can even explain why SF is considered a Fighter much less convince people Smash isn’t one.
Man, all these people who say smash sucks because it requires no skill, blah blah blah should go to a melee tourney and make dat money. I mean, it should be easy pickings beating all the little kiddies, am I right?

And I have no fucking idea how you can say Smash isn’t in depth and it’s not a fighting game. The characters in smash have so many different attributes to them you have to play completely differently for almost every single one (even the clones like Cap Fal and Gannon).
And I mean what kind of crap is this “its not a fighting game”. What the fuck is it a racing game? They’re clearly fighting and there’s nothing else in the game besides fighting (in less you want to be dumb and count the side scroller which just a SMALL part of the 1 player mode)
lol, too true. Except I don’t think a droppable weapon counts as an item if it can’t be used by both people. In Guilty Gear, Fausts bomb will hurt him as well as the opponent, so that would count.
Wasn’t there a (or maybe a couple) game that had weapons that you could use? Mortal Kombat and others?
Winning a melee tournament is hard as hell if it’s in a decent area.

How is smash not a fighter? Is it a traditional fighter no… but fighter none the least The most basic compound of a fighter is to fight and opponent until the are k.o’d, time out, or ringed out and smash provides at least one of those stipulations.
Is Mario kart not a racing game?
Is Mario tennis not a tennis game?
Is Mario soccer not a soccer game?
Is Mario base ball not a base ball game?
Your a liar if you say no to anyone of those, just like your a liar if you say smash brother’s is not a fighter. Nintendo does things differently when it comes to your typical genre’s. none of the nintendo spin off games plays just like the original, other wise why not just go get a copy of fifa or a random racing game or fighter, does that make it not part of that category?
Its sad to see people hate on a game…they’ll play it but won’t acknowledge that it goes a lil deeper then AAA,b Roll… its like those who say smash is not a real fighter is afraid that smash is going to take over so they blame it on america wanting it to easy. Last I checked samsh was developed outside of the usa by your friends the Japanese Also last I checked the Japaneses play smash competitively too.
One reason smash get played some much in the usa is because you can play it online 2player 3 or 4. And there is always someone to play, kinda like back in the days of the arcade where even if it was a scrub you had someone to play and practice on.
Another thing i don’t get is why all those that say smash is so easy just don’t go to tourneys enter and rape. Free money is free money.
