Shut up! - The Sentinel Thread

If you’re losing to button mashers and random supers then you just need to step your game up big time. You are the prime example of the Sentinel players that the public hates and you are proving the point of how OP Sentinel is. Someone who doesn’t bother to learn how to play the game better, but alternatively looks to the robot to cover their shortcomings. The problem is that Sentinel does just that. He is easy to pick up and play and does a ridiculous amount of damage without much effort. So where you were clearly a below average player who lost to button mashers, with Sentinel, you are all of a sudden much better. Its not because you put in a lot of time practicing, its because you started playing with an OP character.

I don’t say that to be mean, or to try to discount the ability of good players who play with Sentinel, but the fact of the matter is that he was an overpowered character that gave below average players a much greater chance to beat players who were better than them.

I’m pretty sure I was better than the people I was losing too. I don’t mash. The team and the characters I had were weak. It’s not like I didn’t have a strategy, it was that the team I had didn’t play the strategy out well. I mean some characters don’t fit your style. Trish did NOT fit my style. I thought she was a cool character. But she wasn’t the trap punishment goddess I needed her to be. MODOK wasn’t what I need him to be. I was originally going to be a run away king in this game (like I was in MVC2) but the game system doesn’t allow for that.

When I went to Sentinel and Hulk I finally felt that if I couldn’t run away form someone attacking me. I can very well knock the shit of them for trying to attack me. I’m a defensive player, Sentinel and Hulk fit my style WAY better than the other team I was using. I don’t want to lose to worser players because they’re more willing to throw out random stuff. I don’t want to have to practice to beat mash tactics. Sentinel and Hulk are my scrub killing characters so I can spend time practicing against real tactics.

I think the reason most lower skilled players flock to Sent isn’t just that he’s powerful, it’s that he’s powerful and really, really easy to use from an execution standpoint. Just in terms of how many buttons you have to hit versus how much damage you do, nobody’s got that ratio better than Sent.

I’m just not sure that means he was actually overpowered. I could post videos of JWong raping sent with Wolverine but that wouldn’t really make my point, it’s just another counterexample.

Why not? Yeah they’re stupid low tier bullshit or however you want to think of them, but you’re going to end up playing against people who do this (at least online), so why not take the time to figure out how to really annihilate someone who can’t play the game as well as you?

i like what you did there with gundam… but you need to hook me up with w.e drugs you’re on… all these ppl that are saying “i’m done with mvc3, sentinel nerf ended it for me” are all the same ppl that were picking sentinel to get easy wins… not because they liked his play-style or wanted to control a mech lol…

I’m not some Sentinel bandwagoner. So I want to stop it right there. I used Sentinel for years in MVc2. And I liked him because his flight mode, his unfly, and his mobility. The only reason I wasn’t going to use him inititally was because of he didn’t see as mobile. I have been using Sentinel for years.

And I'm sorry if I'm trying to learn a game or trying to try stuff out it is discouraging when someone starts mashing cr.a and they get some fat combo off of it. Or if I'm trying to setup traps and some dude just jumping and mashing gets more damage and gets way more meter (for random supers) just because he's hitting more buttons. I hate people hitting buttons in my face and not ended up dead for it. I'm like that in ANY game. I'm a frame traping fool in SSFIV. And Sentinel fits it perfectly because I have that mindset to punish anyone trying to hit a button against me.

Sure some people are using Sentinel because of his damage, but I’m not the case. I actually like the way he plays, and I like the fact he can be lamed out or ran away from. I’m a runaway player myself so it’s fun to get reads on runaway/keepway tactics.

I’m amazed that someone who has been playing as long as you is complaining that Sentinel is/was overpowered. Anyways, Sentinel was made for new players, I thought everyone in this community had understood this after reading “The only problem with Sentinel…Is you” thread (If you have not read it, read it).

Well, after that your just rambling about how young and unskilled I am. I don’t see the discussion going to anymore than a flame-war.

I’ll leave on that note, old man.

you like sentinel as a character… that’s cool… but dont speak for the rest of the ppl that are using him for cheap and easy wins because a true sentinel fan wouldn’t drop him because of a nerf

I don’t need to read a thread to form “MY” opinions of a game and a character. I have a clear understanding of what he is and what he is capable of from experience and observation. You have still offered up nothing better to justify your tears other than “He can be beat, I can give you tips.”

You probably should just stop talking because you haven’t said a single thing of substance yet.

Yeah okay guy.

It’s not, but if that’s the case, then a nerf to his health doesn’t change anything for those people.

You didn’t read the thread? Then you must not need to because it only supports everything you say, I’m being serious it even talks about how Sentinel is for new people. Anyways, our arguments are on two different levels. I’m mad about my game data being changed and you are mad about Sentinel being overpowered (I think). My “tears” are at Capcom, not you, because now I know if I (and others) cry enough that Capcom will submit. Which makes me angry.

This is the question I have to peope whining. Why does it matter why people use Sentinel? Seriously? I think picking Sentinel because you want to win is a far more substantive reason that “I like his number 3 costum” or “I like his win quotes”. At least the character to some degree is being picked up for his game play.

Think about SF where a lot of newbies pick up Ryu and Ken. Because their moves are easy to do, they are accessible, and it’s easier to learn the game with them. Now of course as they get better, learn more matchups and learn the mechanics a lot of players end up moving on. Some stick with Ryu or Ken and try to make it work with them at higher level. Others eventually migrate to other characters who better fit their playstyle. But there is nothing wrong with picking who you feel most comfortable using.

As time goes on, yeah the low level Sentinels will lose, and if they stick with the game, they’ll probably just move to characters who better fit their style. For me, I’m sticking it out with Sentinel 110% through thick and thin. Some will ultimately move to the other cast. But at least they’re playing, and at least they’re comfortable with the game. Isn’t that really what matters? There is no easy win against somone who is good.

What does the date I decided to start posting on this forum have to do with when I started playing fighting games?

I think that the reason you are mad at your game data being changed is because you are biased though and not looking at the character objectively because he is your baby. My point is that he needed a nerf for the sake of game balance. Some are of the opinion that he is overpowered and it is a fact that he is overused. If Capcom’s only real reason was to deter so many people from playing him then in my opinion they are justified. Regardless of how overpowered you think he is or not, the fact still remains that he is the most used characters among casuals and tournament level players. Its not your game. Its Capcom’s game. And if you don’t agree with that statement, then its my game just as much as it is your game. So why is your opinion of what is “perfectly fine” more important than Capcom’s or any one else in the community?

The change to his health does seem extreme, but nothing about his gameplay has changed. His moves are all still the same and do the same damage. That other guy who I was talking to earlier can still punish the hell out of “button mashers” like he wants to. Lvl 3 X-factor still lets you kill characters without even completing half of a basic combo.

In all honesty, I don’t care why someone picks Sentinel. I’m just tired of fighting him, tired of watching him fight, and I think there is a serious disconnect between his ease of use and how good he is.

I’m implying that you’re spouting nonsense and probably joined when you got hype for mvc3 and didn’t take fighters seriously until then, and only play mvc3.

Never found sentinel overpowered before the health nerf. He was good and had easy one touch of death combos, but if I lost it just made me step my game up instead of crying overpowered.

Also with branh here on a lot of things. Mostly who cares why people pick sent. Let them pick him for what ever reason.
No need to insult a man just because Sent fits his cup of tea.

Well your assumption is wrong and pretty ignorant. Posting on this forum has absolutely nothing to do with one’s experience.

been reading this thread since I got to work.
And I must say that this is more fun than a Tela-Novela.

Now if we could just get Trish pregant by Sent and then put Spiderman in a comma we would be right on track
