Im just curious, if the reasoning (as on dustloop) is that he wants to make sure the top 3 go, why not run 3 seperate single elim tourneys like they did with tekken last year and send the guys who get 1st in each?
Because, there are also ‘cons’ to run 3 seperate tourneys. Obviously you guys only try to look at the good of OH CRAP, TOP 3 WON SINGLES SO THEY’RE THE BEST.
Try to think of it this way.
Eddie wins Singles. No Eddie in next tournament, so obviously people who have bad matchups against Eddie are like YES, IT’S OUR TURN TO WIN! And then it’s just a continuous trend of who’s bad matchups are taken out and what not.
Why do you think Mopreme won 3s quals two years ago with Denjin Ryu (Best Denjin Ryu EVER, but still). He had no Chun-Li (Ryu’s bad matchup) to worry about. What if someone else qualified with Ken, but also gets raped by Chun? They hit up a team that puts Chun first and they’re pretty much dicked because they’re depending on a mirror matchup. Did they deserve to go represent America just because they each won singles tournaments that didn’t have Chun Li in it?
Teams, you try to make your teammates off of helping your bad matchups, and using that to your advantage. If a team happens to rape with all low tier, so be it. They are probably hella good players, but they had a team synergy and they work with it (A low tier team will never win in the States, btw).
If a good team is carrying one bad player, but still had enough to say, “Yeah, we’re going to carry you through Japan.” Those are the teams that don’t give a shit about going past the first round, but more so going to Japan. The teams that truly deserve to go, will go.
I believe all EmotionGear is trying to prevent is a REALLY bad player on a good team to ruin the chances of getting past the first round. You woudn’t want to see Justin Wong/PyroLee/Chudat going for 3rd Strike… I’m sure there would be hella people mashing on iRC/SRK, “OMG WTF?! CHUDAT?! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!” I’m sure if people actually went to SBO quals and had a good team and won, they would not have anything to worry about.
Let’s just hope a good team wins then.
yo inui y r you postin so much in this thread r u comin to this or do u live in TX? if u live in TX i would love to see how good evo east top 8 is!!!
No matter what you say it doesn’t make it right. How can a person who doesn’t even play competitive fighting games determine who the best players are without consulting a third party, and with that being said, this can cause some major issues regarding fairness and using bad match-ups as an excuse is stupid. If bad match-ups are an issue for the best players here, then they have no chance
of making it past the first found at SBO.
We all know that bad players get on a good team to make up for there own short-comings and yeah that sucks but thats just the way it is. Your personal preference shouldn’t have anything to do with it, a players skill should speak for itself and if you can’t win in the U.S. what makes you think you have a chance in a country where the players are significantly better than most of the entire world.
And you know if anyone else was pulling something like this we would be complaining our asses off. Good players didn’t get good via handouts so why is it ok when it’s for the hometown. This type of thing can create a bad backlash, maybe all the other qauls should be for everyone else except texas.
Maybe we should call this the kiss-ass tourney08 because it seems like everyone here that is agreeing with this shit is doing so only so they wont have a bad rep with PZ, hoping they can go to SBO no matter the circumstances.
I live in NJ, but I’m going.
Well, I only got top 8 for Smash Melee. I’m not top 8 material in anything else…except hopefully Brawl if EVO has it.
what games r u comin for? maybe we will get to play some melee.
Smash Brawl and Guilty Gear.
I’ll play Melee if it’s there, too. Even 64.
who is yo gg team goin be? and i didnt play smash 64 like that so i suck at it.
DONT DO HIM LIKE THAT BUCKETHEAD!!!
’
kiss-ass tourney08
lmao
that is all
I need a team for GG? No singles? I don’t know anyone.
Well that’s certainly a surprise.
Nah, I’m joking, Texas has a GG scene, go make some friends ;p!
WOW! Not the kiss-ass tournament! Ranma or John get at me after Final Round. I want y’all to come to FRXI this year too. (Business)
I see Pz is at it again…Lets see a plane ticket to Houston $250.00…Food and housing for the weekend $100.00…Getting 1st place at Showdown Championships and John (Manager at PZ) telling you won’t be able to attend the SBO this year because of the way you dress…PRICELESS…
Let see first last year was…O yeah the check in the mail…now this…
…Say gene this shit is more funnier then when Carmen saw butt face for the first time……
:woot::woot:
I fucking love it
Two thumbs up for :tup:kiss-ass tourney08
Does anyone happen to know if its at all possible to re-locate the qualifiers & the responsibility of holding it to somewhere else…anywhere, for that matter?!? I know this is somewhat off topic, but no sense making a whole thread over it…
It isn’t possible
boycott 08
2nd year and counting.
you could rant at pz people all day about why you think what they are doing is strategically or morally wrong, but, considering that things probably haven’t changed since last year, it won’t influence their decisions.
one thing that people are hung up on i think is that they want SBO teams in the US to actually represent the best of the US (which isn’t unreasonable :wasted:). in PZ’s announcement they wrote “This team will be representing Planet Zero and its partners while in Japan for the duration of their trip.” – nothing about the country’s gg scene on the whole. :x this is THEIR spot that they had to spend lots of time, money, and political capital to get, not OUR spot
players have a very different point of view, but from what i see, SBO isn’t interested in the interests of the players as much as they are interested in creating an exciting event and using the tournament as a marketing tool to promote arcade gaming and sell magazines (which does indirectly serve our, the players, interests).
Fo ril.
