Shoryureppa! The Ken Thread

I got that by using the “Search This Thread” button and typing “Dhalsim”. If you have any questions that aren’t covered in Blitzfu’s breakdown of the match, be sure to ask.

just wanted to say ggs blitz.
my hawks never lost to a shoto before. Great pleasure playing u.
wont be home for another 2wks, hopefully we can get in some games then

Alright I’m playing HDR/GGPO ST again…

Basic question. Can someone explain the intricacies of the “fireball trap”? ie, what are Ken’s options after a meaty jab fireball? What’s the proper distance for it?

The term gets tossed around so much but I’ve never had a formal explanation. I wonder if I’m missing out on some of the subtleties.

Jab Hadoken > Fierce Hadoken, from between half screen and 3/4 screen range.

Read Ken’s section in my FAQ and check out the plentiful options Ken has after a meaty :lp: Hadouken.

Yes…I know…shameless plug…but it gets the job done. :slight_smile:

I just learned a neat little trick from the Shoryuken Wiki. When opponents cross you up, instead of doing the Shoryuken the opposite way, do f, df, d, db and this will give you a Shoryuken everytime. For better results, I piano it, and now not even Zangief’s cross-splash of death is scary any more. I used to do Shoryuken the opposite way, but it wouldn’t always work. This way is more effective, but not 100% fool proof. If your opponent times the crossup early, eg they’re still in the air in front of you on wakeup, it will miss. Still, it’s a good tool to have, especially against Dee Jay, as he loves to do late crossups. I can’t believe I missed it the first time I read it.

Hey blitz you play me enough to know.

What am i doing wrong?

I just went on a 15 game losing streak in ranked. No scrubs, everyone I fought was competent at the game. Especially KoreanInferno, guy has his game down.

Is it my habits, strategies, or is it just my execution? I feel like I’m better than I used to be, but you are still obviously better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You’ve definitely improved a lot since I first played you CothX. I can’t really think of any advice. I think you just need more experience with all of Ken’s matchups. And then I think you’ll be more confident with your game. That’s why I’m so confident, I’ve been playing this game for 15 years, so I have a lot of experience under my belt. Experience definitely goes a long way in knowing what to do when your opponent tries to surprise you with stuff you’ve never seen before. You won’t be surprised, cuz you’ve seen it before! = )

I’ll keep going then.

Speaking of matchups, I have heard people say ken is honda’s #1 counter pick. What does ken do in this matchup with fireballs that ryu can’t do as effectively?

What is the true difference between ryu’s and ken’s hados?

I think it is the dp that makes ken better against honda, not the hados.

I’ve heard that too, and whenever I face a Honda I usually have a lot of difficulty. Any help with this matchup would be greatly appreciated. :slight_smile:

Post removed as it was SF4 specific…lol…forgot this thread is for HDR.

:rofl:

Hey para I think you are in SFIV mode right now. Ken doesn’t have a f+mk in HDR lol.

I have heard too that Ken is harder for Honda players, but I find that I have an easier time as Ryu vs Honda. Faster, bigger Hadokens make it harder for Honda to get around, as well as Ryu’s Super can destroy Honda’s Super comfortably, without having to worry about timing.

I tried to find the frame data by searching but only SFIV came up.(This is where I hope OJ walks in with a link) :slight_smile:

As far as some vids here you go,

First 6 minutes are aniken fighting a sagat player.

Thing is that it doesn’t seem like aniken is afraid to take a hit when he wants to try something.

I know I’ve posted the last two, on two other occasions, but they are just so damn good, and are always good for reference. From 1:30 to 2:50 he fights another honda.

Surprisingly its really hard to find pro ryu vs. pro honda vids on youtube.

Note that we did fix a bug with this move. In ST, moves that can hit on the first frame have an unintended property that if the opponent tries to block them on the very first frame, there is a 50% chance the move will hit anyway. These 1-frame semi-unblockables are fixed in HD Remix (but left unfixed in HD Classic Arcade). You can toggle this bug on/off in each mode with the dipswitch settings, too.

Well look what I found browsing the changes in HDR on sirlin.net.

Looks like fixed was too soon a description. It now seems to occur rougly 25% of the time instead of 50%.

Somebody call me? :slight_smile:

Oh…yeah…that link… :slight_smile:

lol

Fresh OJ, here to save the day!

So ryu’s hado is 1 frame faster then ken’s.

ryu’s srk
@4 @4 @2 @8 @21 @5
@4 @4 @2 @12 @28 @5
@4 @4 @2 @16 @35 @5

ken’s srk
@2 @4 @2 @12 @16 @3
@2 @4 @2 @20 @24 @3
@0 @2 @2 @2 @24 @31 @3

ryu has 4 startup frames then 2 frames where he can be thrown/no invincible then 4 hitting frames, then 8 hitting frames in the air, then 21 frames to fall, then 5 landing frames. Is this a correct interpretation?

ken has 2 startup frames then 2 frames where he can be thrown/no invincible then 4 hitting frames, then 12 hitting frames in the air, then 16 frames to fall, then 3 frames to land. Is this a correct interpretation?

If that’s correct then that means that ryu’s srk is 44 frames long?
and that ken’s is 39 frames long?

All of this frame data was on speed 0, so ken’s srk is faster on default speed, and still faster than ryu’s.

I get that ryu’s hado is a frame faster than ken’s and that ken’s srk is five frames faster than ryu’s. Does that difference really make ken the better opponent to beat honda? Well regardless ryu/ken rape honda so i guess that’s all that matters.

No wonder ken’s srk is so much harder to punish than ryu’s.

Oh jesus…smacks forehead…that is what I get for not checking where the thread was located.

Man I feel stupid, I’ll go back and edit my post…thanks for catching that!

:rofl:

The popular reason as to why Ken is Honda’s worst nightmare is because of Ken’s Champion Edition like arc on his Fierce Shoryuken. When Ken throws a Hadouken, Honda only has one option to defeat it while staying relatively on the ground…the Jab Headbutt. Every other option that he has requires him to get airborne…and Ken controls much of the air space with the Fierce Shoryuken, so it’s that much harder for Honda to get in.

That’s my short and scrubby version of it. Someone else can break it down much further than me.
