Why… would we be surprised? Alex Valle’s Ken is really good. I thought this was common knowledge. He used Ken at Evo last year during the top 8. Valle has an incredible Ken. There might be a few people in the country who main Ken who might have a stronger Ken that Valle’s, but Valle’s Ken is great. I don’t think anyone would be surprised by that at all, so I’m not sure why you think people would think his Ken’s garbage.
Having said that, and this is not a put down to Valle in any way shape or form, but the Kens in Japan are better. Especially Aniken, who is probably close to being the best Ken on the planet. Japan has an obsession with Ken in ST. Stories have been told that guys from the U.S. visited More (sp?) Arcade, a really popular arcade in Japan. And on like 8 or so ST machines, 15 of the 16 possible characters were Ken. The way Ken is played there is on another level at times.
I’m curious if you’ve watched the best Kens from Japan play and, if you have, are what they do fairly rudimentary to you?

There, I just told you one way to get around the problem, and blitz has told you another way. In fact, one of the biggest complaints with Ken is the “easier” motions thing with a srk coming out instead of hado. However, that’s fixed by doing what blitz said.

Ryu is not Ken. If Ryu does qcf + RH, no special will come out. Totally different characters.

Seriously tho, go play ShadyK or jeffhizzle254’s Ken, and then tell me he’s still mid tier. Ken is upper mid now, just behind Ryu. I would tell you to play me, but I’m not on Xbox.
Hawk is mid tier. Ive said it before. Hes only mid tier. Stuck in the middle of it all. Ken is slightly above him. Id love to play them. I dont remember the best Ken ive played

I seem to get crushed by zangief players for some dam reason. I recognize a few names here for people I’ve played against like Blitzfu.
Hey, new here, looking for some advice on a few things:
I’m familiar with SF, but HDR is the first time I’ve ever taken it seriously (Yay online multiplayer), and I tend to main Ken, though i dabble in ryu and sagat. I can’t do many complicated combos (360 pad) though i know some basic ones. I am holding onto a approximate 50/50 win/loss percentage online, and i need some advice to up my game.
A: I need some help with Dictator, Gief, Honda, and (big surprise) Akuma. Any basic strategies and do this/don’t do that would be helpful.
B: Is there any practical use to ken’s ground hurricane other than getting lucky and transitioning it into a knee bash and avoiding sonic booms?
C: Could someone post some of the best basic knee bash combos/set-ups/strategies/shenanigans?
D: I think I rely too much on specials, and also I have yet to figure out how to effectively use any crazy kicks, any help here would be appreciated.

Mattsun is dope. I found matches with Hakkari and Mi as well, but Mi seems to stick to O. Ken and I didn’t watch any Hakkari matches.
A. Can you be more specific, is it certain moves, strategies?
B. I think it still goes over yoga fires, but for the most part, its not his best tool.

D. crazy mk/hk can be used in any combo where an srk/hado will work, except the opponent must be standing not crouching. Crazy lk only combos at extreme close range, but any pushback from a prior move will ruin it.
Example: close mp > crazy lk combos at the closest range
jumping mk > close mp > crazy lk won’t combo the last time I tried it.
BTW, ken’s jab srk does a shitload of damage on counter hit I believe. Countering a jump in attack with it will do some good damage. Specials aren’t everything though, so learn to use his cr.hp for anti air as well, and his cr.mk for poking.
It would be awesome if crazy lk did, because it can’t be ducked, both hits are mid level, so they have to at least block both hits. I’ll keep trying on the crazy lk, but it seems like what hammer said earlier, its best feature is the fact that it doesn’t make you move forward.
Thanks for the help. Playing Ken, jab srk has indeed become one of my best friends :bgrin: . Its amazing how many people online have trouble dealing with it. As for the matchup specific stuff, i think i get the basic strategies: Honda and Gief you play keep-away, dic you have to lock-down, and akuma you just hope that the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing :P. I was just wondering if there were any tips or tricks specific to these characters that would help me out in these matchups.

Mabye they will go for the neckbreaker on knock down followed by st. strong>throw or maybe st.strong>cr. roundhouse just to mix it up and bait the shoryu.
It seems once she has her super its over.
Ken’s mp srk will pretty much always beat akuma’s air fireball. Even in the rare instance you fall on it, the trade is still in your favor. Otherwise, you can fight him like ryu pretty much.
Watch out for dic’s scissor kick, if you block it its extremly easy for him to mixup you up after it. It knocks down too.
These are good reference vids, but there is some honda in the second vid. This ken is quite skilled.
