VDO/Potter no contest.
Sabre, Sakura did everything right in there.

Its hard to consider what would be match of the year since the votes are basically going for the “moments” of the matches rather than the entire matches themselves, others are also voting simply because they dont know whats going on in the other games so they dont take the time to watch it which really messes up proper voting, if a match is up there for the finalists then at least take the time to watch it or learn a thing a 2 about the game regardless of what it is
i had no idea what was going on in the TVC vid but i still enjoyed it and figured out why Gian took the win, match of the year should take into consideration that BOTH players are pushed to there limits and play there best, not just 1 person beating the shit out of another, most of the matches minus the valle vs sabre match had that quality which makes it hard to vote when the quality and level of the matches are high
imo next year should allow only 1 video per game and a list of qualifications to be nominated and a little list on what people should consider when voting, this is turning into moment of the year 2009 and not match of the year unfortunately
Valle vs Sabre.
Low tier character repping against a top tier character is always a treat.
This is why I hope Sakura doesn’t get changed too much in SSF4. Her playstyle is so fun.
I was gonna say the same thing.
Well half the list for me is gone cause SF4 is complete garbage. Yeah Valle/Sabre was hype but it wasn’t that great of a match. And it was SF4, that game is boring and slow. It’s almost as bad as CvS2 for me. Plus people KNEW about the mix-ups and everything, no one ever used them until Sabre. Also, I thought this was a Match of the Year vote, not a tutorial on how to mix up Alex Valle/with Sakura/SF4 combo exhibition.
Kubo vs Gian was pretty cool too, it’s amazing he got out of the Karas bs and came back but in the end, it was still Ryu, a high tier in TvC. Justin vs Sanford might as well have been in this lineup with their teams or the Justin comeback on Chris S.
It’s a toss-up between VDO/Potter and Momochi/K.O. for me. VDO really had to fight to win that. The matchup gap is huge in MvC2 (A lot bigger than SF4) and he showed that he was there to play. Plus the ending was clutch.
Momochi vs KO was great. Both players competed and did what they could. Fighting either Yang/Yun or Makoto is hard and watching 2 great players fight it out with them to their potential is awesome.
i voted for the momochi vs ko fight but i wish i would’ve voted for the alex valle vs sabre fight.
Went with the MvC2 match. A game that seems one sided since the beginning with an even more awesome ending I could imagine
Btw, how the hell did Guile do dash > Ultra? I thought there isn’t charge partitioning on SF IV
I had to vote for the Momochi/K.O. match. It’s how I pictured a Makoto vs. Yang match would be. Non-stop action.
Sakura mixups was a close second though.
VDO gets my vote.
Personally I find myself torn between Dashio (Viper) vs Shiro (Abel) [at SBO 2009] and the MvC2 match.
Ultimately, though, I really enjoy the nail biting last second (last frame?!) finish to watching one player win decisively… so I voted for the latter.
VDO was clutch during the match and the huge come back.
Imagine coming back with 15% of life against 75% in SF4 and multiple that by 3, you’ll have MvC2. That’s not including the button inputs, execution, and composure that’s needed to play MvC2.
Guard breaking, infinites, and DHCs were all tools that VDO used to execute such a come back.
GODLIKE
I’ve got to go with SF4: Alex Valle (Ryu) vs SabrE (Sakura). That was rape on a whole new level. If you listened carefully, you could hear a small part of Valle’s soul die.
After much thought… I have to give it to marvel.
greatest game ever
Gotta give it up to VDO. Always enjoy watching him play.
I voted for Alex Valle vs. SabrE for two reasons.
- SabrE’s mixups are incredible and had me on the edge of my seat.
- There were no uses of the Ultra Combo mechanic throughout the match. This match proves to me that Street Fighter IV would be a much better game if the Revenge Gauge were removed. The Revenge Gauge is probably the worst fighting game mechanic in history.
I will have to give it up to VDO on this one. Winning against a runaway Storm that has you on the rope… priceless.
Uh…no.
Dial-a-combos?
Random decapitations?
V-Ism?
SF3-style parrying?
Critical Counters?
Basketball combos?
Invincible Specials via Roll Canceling?
Guard Cancel Front Step?
Ring-outs in a 2D fighting game?
Basically everything Ergheiz did?
I stand corrected.
The Revenge Gauge is still an extremely bad idea, though, and I’d rather have dial-a-combos than be rewarded for losing. That’s just my preference, though.
