Potter vs VDO!

Just when you think VDO is out of it he pulls out a clutch guardbreak into the infinite with Ken. Then after that, the rest is history. Too good!

I am kinda disappointed with the finalist, people have already mentions some good contenders.

I dont see all the fuss about the Sak match. It was really one sided, and the sakura play was amazing, best i’ve ever seen, but I think match of the year, needs to have some back and forth.

For me it came down to the MvC2 match and the 3s match. I went with the 3s match because both sides went at it, the third round was well played in my opinion.

and great ken play. his throw type is good for infi combos 8:45

VDO match got my vote for sure.

I mean, I’m a Marvel head and all, but that’s not why it got my vote. Just the sheer patience and skill of VDO’s three “random” characters competing against the most well balanced team in the game and then winning is something that is a lot more difficult than what was done in any of the other finalists.

Sure VDO may have pulled upsets like this against other top players with his low team, but again, due to how unbalanced Marvel is, and how much it focuses on active team chemistry, only further shows how much of an uphill battle for VDO. Whereas with the Able/Viper and Sakura/Ryu matches were more based on some good tricks that lead to big damage and dizzies that ended rounds really fast.

Not saying that the SFIV matches were horrible or anything, they were good, but the VDO clutch comeback could be something that could be called an “Evo Moment, Never Give Up 2009” whereas the Sabre/Valle match was just straight mixup city.

And the SFIII: 3rd Strike match felt pretty standard.

If something besides the Valle/Sabre or VDO/Potter win this, I’ll be really surprised. But again, I definitely gotta go with the VDO match no contest!

this should be the match of the year

sabre/valle was the best in person by far…the rest of you just voting based on a video

I wasn’t there, but the VDO v Potter match didn’t look to shabby as far as in person hype go either. VDO v Potter got my vote, I cannot ever imagine a SF4 vid setting my pants on fire.

SF4: Dashio (Viper) vs Shiro (Abel) [at SBO 2009] had drama as well. good mixups and comeback. 3s still gets my vote

No one really gives a fuck about you or your opinion beyond the button you click for the poll. You voted just like everyone else and that’s all you should have to do to move the fuck on. This isn’t a presidential debate; no one gives a shit why you voted for who you did or about your unnecessary rebuttal to people who don’t care for the same things you do. I thought the MVC2 battle was very hype. I voted for Sabre’s match mainly because your posts remind me of how much of a bitch MVC2 fanboys can be. If you want this shit to lose, by all means, continue posting. VDO is hype as hell and I love watching his matches. Your bullshit posts filled with ignorance and hypocrisy I can do without.

You do and they beast on a casual level (double wolverines, there are some beastly Anak teams I’ve seen, and there was a dude from Tallahassee who played Collossus/Hulk/Juggs and would make you shit bricks but he never traveled). You just don’t see them winning actual tourneys and matches like VDO does. Dude has a knack for understanding every property of his team. It’s insane. Some of the shit he does on reaction to avoid chip and such is ridiculous.

SF4: Fujisawa (Guile) vs Akimo (Honda) [at TRF 12-06-2009]

 • One of the reasons I’m nervous to see certain characters get buffed for SF4 is because we’ll see more matches like this… reasonably slow zoning matches that aren’t too fun to watch. The last 30 seconds of the match were entertaing. Guile guesses on dash ultra (kinda like throwing it out in a block string), then has a nice link. If it weren’t for the double KO, this match would be nowhere near contending.

MvC2: VDO (Rogue/Ken/Colossus) vs Potter (Storm/Sentinel/Cable) [at Evo2k9 7-18-09]

 • Since I don’t play MvC2, and runaway play is annoying to me, I’ll have to pass on this. The hype at the end was pretty great, though. If this wins because MvC2 players push it over the top, that’s cool.

SF4: Alex Valle (Ryu) vs SabrE (Sakura) [at Evo2k9 7-17-09]

 • Part of me doesn’t want to vote for this, because it’s just unfamiliarity with the character, and even though Sabre is good and is totally capable of beating Valle even without that, it just kinda feels gimmicky to me. Despite that, I think it’s the match that generated the most hype and screaming, especially given the circumstances, and is exciting all throughout, instead of just random 5-10 seconds of brilliance in a 3 minute match. I watched it on the live stream (the best you can do without being there!), so it’ll get my vote from these 6 choices.

TVC: Kubo (Karas/Ryu) vs GIAN (Chun-li/Ryu) [01-29-09]

 • I don’t really understand what’s going on here, other than Karas is broken, dominated the match, and then made a mistake at the end and lost. It was a nice comeback, though.

SF4: Dashio (Viper) vs Shiro (Abel) [at SBO 2009]

 • Being an Abel player, it’s hard not to vote for this, because I feel Shiro’s pain as he’s constantly guessing wrong and taking damage. It kind of sucks for Viper, because on the stun at the end, she did the absolute worst combo possible. If she starts with a jump-in (and does the rest the same), she wins. If she does EX seismo, she wins. I think if she even does MK knuckle, she wins. She was just too scared to FFF and screwing it up, but she didn’t think through the proper choices there. As a result I kind of feel Dashio deserved to lose that fight. I especially appreciate how Shiro saves his ultra, even though he gets CoD FADC before that. He knows he needs one more guess to win anyway, so he saves it for when it does the most damage. Again, if I’m Dashio, I think you have to block the way he didn’t… Abel can’t ultra you if you guess wrong the other way, due to the corner. Abel is very clearly going to bias the guessing game so he can ultra you away from the corner, and you just … absolutely have to guess that way in that spot. I think Dashio just fell apart at the end due to the pressure (nice to see Japanese players aren’t immune to pressure!). Exciting match, but full of too many mistakes to be the BEST match of the whole year for me.

SF3 3s: Momochi (Makoto) vs K.O (Yang) [at SBO 2009]

 • A great 3s match, proving that KO doesn’t get phased easily, despite losing badly in the first round. Other than it being the end of SBO, though, I don’t see anything too special with the match. Momochi’s SA1 finish was actually pretty strong, but the rest of the match was kind of “standard play”, and 3s matches need to be held to a bit higher standard to win, since there are so many utterly breathtaking matches online now (Sugiyama Necro vs Messatsu Urien, etc).

It’s really a shame that Daigo/Iyo from Gamestop finals is off the list, because that’s absolutely without a doubt the best high-profile (ie, recorded and put on Youtube) match of the entire year.

Mvc2 match wins for sure. Valle match was only cool becasue a low teir was beasting, and the mvc2 match had that times 7 (the gap between sakura and ryu is < the gap between ken/col/rogue and storm/sent/cable). Guile honda match had a sweet finish, but not as sweet as zero seconds left match swing. viper abel had a good comeback, but not as good as either tvc or mvc2, and that 3rd strike match just wasn’t that interesting. Hard to believe that was the best 3rd strike match all year. The only knock on the mvc2 match was that potters play was very straight forward. Well done, but sort of same old stuff

even though I don’t play mvc2 at all, and being an abel main, and being a 3s fanboy, the vdo/potter match was just too good

That 3s match was good but not that great. There had to have been some better 3s matches on a high level this year. You don’t even have to like Marvel to appreciate the VDO match.

SF4 Fuji match was really good. Very calculating from both sides.

Zohta vs erick kim NECX. go watch it on FADC and feel the hype!

maybe not match of the year but a good arguement for why ggpo kicks ass.

sigh* that should be called choke of the year for what happened

iloveu joe vs tim static

money matches in UMK3 @ SB4, after Daigo v Justin.

I love all the people nominating new videos in this thread.

So true. There were a lot of better matches out there then the ones that are up for voting.

I think you misunderstood me. I was being sarcastic.

Where were all these nominations for the 20+ days we were actually taking nominations? Don’t participate and then complain your voice was not heard?
