You’re right, Fighting Games are not at a point where you can pick every character and do well. Guess what? That’s the same for everything. The biggest issue, would be as you said, you put in a ton of work with one character and it’s all gone with a patch. But this is not an issue with Fighting Games. This an issue with ALL new games, because of “patch culture”. But even then…this is not exclusive to just games either, and is more devastating in real life sports. Best seen in the NFL.
Once Upon a Time, the Fullback Position was a very coveted position, because the I-Formation was one of the most widely used formations there was. Now Fullbacks in 2018 are pretty much extinct, and an entire player position is eliminated. Those who spent years upon years building themselves up to be a Fullback? Outta luck. But it’s going to be more relevant come the conference coming up soon, on whether the Kickoff is kept or eliminated. If eliminated, not only are Kick Returners outright screwed if they don’t also have Punt Return ability, but a bunch of Special Teams Players and plays…are outright eliminated from the sport altogether. Doesn’t seem like much outside of the lost jobs, but think about this. If the 2005 Chicago Bears had played in an era with no Kickoff Returns, they don’t make it to the Super Bowl because Devin Hester’s impact is effectively cut in half. Multiple surprise Onside Kick calls don’t get wins. Hell, the Patriots possibly don’t win their second Super Bowl in 2003 because of a bad kickoff causing them to start at the 40 in the final stages of the game, which allowed Brady a very easy march into FG range.
While it outright sucks that years of work can be lost due to a developer’s whim, this sort of change can happen in a lot of sports as well. Hell, even look at the NBA. Centers had fallen out of favor for the last…8-10 years due to many being seen as both fragile and unnecessary when you could just have a strong 3 or 4 instead, along with the dearth of talent at the position coming out of college. But now with the rise of Joel Embiid, importance will be back on the Center position. Before for GMs, it was important to just grab one star player and build around them. Now, we’re about Superteams, and if you can’t build one, you tank until you can.
Of course the main difference is, in actual games you just have to take the backseat and either try to fight an uphill climb or just learn a new character for a while. In actual sports, you just outright lose your job and livelihood.
Funny i just slammed my controller in pieces five minutes ago. Im tired of playing against an onslew of the same charcters that don’t have to care about anything they press or risk doing and/or take complete advantage online so even when you respond properly it doesn’t matter.
My best friend is dead set against watching Challenger. I haven’t seen the first episode completely. But here’s what I’m wondering though - would you watch a reality show with Daigo, Seth Killian, Justin, Punk, and Alex Valle…!!! And just for kicks and giggles let’s just add Smug.
Yeah total balance is an illusion anyway. Game starts at the character select screen, not Round 1 Fight.
If Guile was the only S tier in the game, but Guile vs Guile was the most compelling, interesting, intense game that could ever be played/watched, the game would still be worthy of being called a “sport”.
i can understand akuma being as good as he is cause by lore he has to be that strong or overwhelming. capcom purposely gave him great tools but other characters like guile who worked extremely well in this game engine will always be high up. Cammy on the other hand is still brain dead and has always been good in every game shes been even marvel vs series lol
Anger issues and FGs go hand in hand. People even get knifed in China over KOF 97 games.
Getting stronger, learning to control that anger, to let the emotions ride through you without affecting your game play (too much). That’s part of the process of becoming a stronger and better player.
So here’s the thing with this game. Unless you’re playing for money, relax. Just enjoy the moment of video gaming. Sure Guile and Cammy are the best, but remember it’s just a VIDEO GAME. If you’re legit mad playing this game. Stop playing it.
I stopped taking Cammy seriously when my wife took a look at the screen one day and asked me why that girl was wearing a baby’s romper.
Sure I still lose to randos two ranks below me who spam stand mk and dive kick, but I can’t get mad at them for playing baby’s first Street fighter when the character is literally wearing a baby’s romper.
