There are zoner characters in Melee…but the best characters just invalidate zoning pretty handily (the spacies have crazy speed + reflectors), so you see far more rushdown as a whole.
Like Young Link is pretty good at running away but he’s still not really tourney viable
See that’s the thing. Think the best “footsies” character in Melee is basically Marth. But that dude is mostly going in regardless. Peach sort of has the best keep away because of her float and radish game.
Think Megaman and ROB both had viable projectiles that could end games; same with Duck Hunt. But a lot of the times those guys aren’t really trying to win with anything resembling actual keep away or projectiles all that much.
But hey, if you guys have match footage of people laming it out in Sm4sh or Ultimate, I’m happy to watch it. Think the lamest it got in Sm4sh was Duck Hunt the GAWD tossing cans at people.
I don’t have match footage (as mentioned I don’t watch other people playing much at all), but I do have a character list at least
The Links all have great tools at keeping the opponent out, regular Link’s sword range is insane now in Ultimate and they have good kill power. Regular Link also has his remote bomb that can kill people off stage (you can get setups with the other two but the blast radius on remote bombs is way larger and tougher to avoid)
The Belmonts also have a huge projectile kit and the longest ranged normal attacks in the game, they very rarely want to be close
Samus still has charge shots and missiles with a long ranged grab and all that fun stuff
ROB, Duck Hunt and Mega Man as you mentioned
Rosalina is the game’s puppet character who likes to play further away
Mewtwo has pretty good range and a projectile he can KO with, but he also has a command grab and kill throws so he’s more of a “can play both” kind of deal
Snake’s projectile game is pretty good and he plays pretty defensively IIRC, tons of projectile traps he can set up
There’s also Villager, Isabelle, Zelda, PAC-MAN, and Robin. All of 'em have good projectile attacks and are good at playing the ranged game, although PAC-MAN and Zelda are a bit more about setups
So many characters I haven’t even been able to fight against the full roster yet. Makes training match-ups a bit of a pain admittedly
If I can bring the discussion back to good games, Shiki looks awesome.
This new char Darli is a very nice design and I think @Bea_Iank should main her.
I am not to thrilled about Wu, summoner characters are dumb.
But you are right, using the window activation makes it easy. It’s an easy oldschool trick I shou”d hav noticed right away but people don’t explain themselves well so I missed it… which is my fault I guess.
Still though… it ain’t no damn dp in out which is where all the fuss started in the first place.
When I was doing it before I was doing 6, 236 P. Still possible to do but you lose speed and accuracy/distance.
Using the wide window makes it much easier. But auto is wrong in the whole (haha sf5 haha) shit. Oldschool ST saved the dp input for STUPID lengths of time and it was actually random how long the window was stored. Idk exact numbers but the buffer window could be as short as 8 frames or as wide as 15. This is how I used to do “check jump” dp’s where I would do the dp input, then wait and see if my opponent jumped… if they did all I had to do was press p. If they didn’t all I had to do was wait a few frames and throw a fireball.
This unfortunately was taken out on HD remix and even taken out on the “oldschool” version of HD remix which is yet another reason why HD remix suck mega ass.
The actual analog stick? So… how long have you been a masochist? Lol I might try that for shits and giggles I figured it’d be too imprecise for fg’s props to you.
Though it depends on the game. Any traditional 2D fighter I use the analog stick with, quarter circles feel far more natural to me on analog stick and most of the characters I use don’t have DP motions (or if they do, are more used for combos rather than needing one quick for anti-airing).
Tekken I used the Pokken Tournament pad
Soul Calibur I used to use analog when it was on Gamecube, since the GC controller has notches so you can easily tell which direction you’re getting. I switched to PS4 pad on the d-pad for SC6.
Basically 3D games I use d-pad, 2D games I use the analog stick. Just what I’m used to~
I’ve never been in love with keepaway per se, but I LOVE midrange play. Midrange play is the stuff of gods. All infighting or all keepaway are both non dynamic bullshit. Which is why new fighting games aren’t very fun. You either get assholes that keep you away all game and no fun allowed, or you characters that are always trying to get in.
It’s rare for a character to be a real bad ass at midscreen while still having some fallback fullscreen stuff and closeup stuff.
Birdie and flake come the closest in sf5 imo. But both are hard relegated to their specific archetype which only really leaves menat, but she boring but atleast she has a divekick for upclose stuff.
Still hard nerfed in most departments to keep her not broken, but, yeah.
Thing is ( and I like auto , he’s cool and shows off some great stuff) this is just another look at this! Cool thing that actually doesn’t have many real applications in a game for good reasons.
I think that’s why he was showing it, it was more - look I’ve actually managed to capture this one situation the one time it would ever happen and not a - Sagat players do this! Type thing.
Its not completely useless, but adding frames on to your best shot just to get closer just so you can dp through a FB… Not my strategy really.
Plot twist *** A st.hk would have smacked Akuma into CC town into a juggle DP for less risk and more damage.
Focusing on Samus (and trying to remember things) ESAM was big with the missles.
You will really only see it against the non top tiers, as all the top tiers pretty well can be zoned out that way.
I found one match vs Yoshi where you will see more missile play, as Samus can zone Yoshi out, and Yoshi does an unholy amount of damage, so you don’t want to fight him up close. You will also see lots of eggs for the same purpose.
Yeah man, whenever. Idk who I’m playing right now tbh. But the sf bug hits every few weeks or so. I don’t like playing people I don’t know anymore though. Call it old age or laziness… maybe both. Don’t have the time to be figuring out some randoms random style, so I’m keen to play you anytime
Have you tried UNIST? Sounds to me that you’ll find this midrange stuff there. Plenty of characters are fine playing from the midrange but are still able to go for full damage and pressure the moment the opponent gives an opening. Gordeau, Yuzuriha, Phonon, Chaos and Carmine come to mind. Just a note: despite often being described as anime ST I would describe better as anime KoF given the dashes and assault hop. But still plenty of stuff you may enjoy, like most characters being able to feel like a special brand of unfair and triple jab confirms.
Both fortunately and unfortunately, I’ve got one of Australia’s best anime players to play unist against.
This guy has execution of the gods and feels like he was born to play anime. He changes up confirms and blockstrings at a total whim and his spacing is ridiculous. The only way I can outplay him is with spacing mindgames as that is his primary falter.
But yeah UNIST is a special brand of crack though I really don’t like playing against phonon because dash block all day is unfunny especially if I mess up on my dash blocka nd get full combod… which happens like every time.
But even still, I would play it more if I had the time, but I just don’t.
My old man shit is getting in the way of picking up games fast. I no longer can and my fingers no longer pick up new muscle memory well.
