Happens in South America too. But ever since the breast cancer fundraiser, the amount of Smash tournaments that had FGs in there has been basically none. It used to be Apex and…thats it.
The fact that Smash tournaments dont include fighting games is so pronounced that some Smash guys tried to do a major that included FGs because they saw how smash doesnt really support the FGC. They got interviewed about it in Eventhubs.
But hey, I only kept track of this over the years, what would I know? So if things in your weird European countries is different now, thats great. But it aint how its panned out over the years.
Meh, you see this stuff with gaming communities a lot.
I play fighting games and Smash both at a decent level so these arguments make me feel super weird. On one hand, the Smash community is younger and I feel like a bit of an old man when I go to events. Yes, they are like, mad grungy looking in that high school anime club kind of way. Yes, there is some competitive culture stuff I dislike about Smash.
On the other hand, the Smash tournament community here in NYC has some of the nicest people I’ve ever known. They instantly made me feel included. I’m not the best player but they’re always willing to help me improve. They smell a bit, but they have real strong character.
Additionally, whether or not Smash is exactly like other fighting games has never been the point to me. 100% I transfer things I learn from Smash to FGs and vice versa, in the same way I transfer things I learned playing SF to GG or whatever. The fundamentals are applied differently but are pretty similar. They’re not nuclear family, but they are second cousins. I don’t think Smash being at evo is a requirement, but I also don’t think it’s offensive.
As for Smash players not being super inclusive to the FGC or learning other games: most fighting game players get pretty annoying when you say you play Smash, and if you don’t believe me, read the replies to this post that are inevitably coming down the pipe. When an entire community writes you off out of hand, it doesn’t feel great to try to include yourself in it. I’m fortunate that I started playing fighting games and Smash both as a young kid and my love for them and community connections to them have remained into adulthood.
I dunno, I definitely think the inclusiveness stuff goes both ways and has to start somewhere.
Its the first 3D model SNK game that I genuinely like the look of so props to SNK. The well done art style beats the hardware limitation and the animations beat the pants off NRS and big step up from 14
I thought that Sajam clip was really funny because within the first 2 sentences you can tell he wasn’t feeling the game but didn’t want to lead off with that. There is one point where he stops himself from calling it straight ugly which was a good catch.
I get his criticisms. Game has tons of hit stop but its SamSho, and it ain’t the absolute sexiest looking thing but they did right by their budget and graphical style (as compared to how cheap KOF14 looked on release).
Different people like different things, who’d have thunk it?
And that the game is slow, and that a game that is based entirely on footsies is boring, I think it was making a broad statement on the last one, because of course there are different archetypes in SamSho.
I am head of heels for this game, always loved the shit out of it and it caters to my playstyle more than most.
If I had to make a complain I’d say that the stages shown so far are a bit dull, SNK usually has more lively backgrounds, so far I have only seen pretty static backgrounds.
So I suppose that could go under the graphics section, but he was complaining about the character models IIRC and those are awesome in my opinion.
Yeah complaining about the hit stop in a SamSho game is like complaining about the wetness of the ocean. If that reboot had modern game hit stop older fans would have rioted and torn the FGC to shreds with the huge normals on their pitchforks.
Thats definitely a Max or NRS thing. Max has said that he doesnt like grounded footsie games as much as movement heavy games. He likes games where you can always run in and out of the neutral freely
Sajam caught onto NRS games first and old NRS especially is very haphazard movement
I am very very down for a slow footsies game. I liked the ground game of USF4 (yeah I know, ya’ll hate me now) and the popular FGs right now are kind of lacking something for me.
The less buttons I press the happier I am.
Despite playing a shitton of anime, my heart is still with “don’t press the good button, press the right button”
