Yeah the closest actual things to counters in Tekken are garbage because of chicken. The other stuff is solid though.
SFxT had healthy counters, and I seem to recall some SFIV counter Ultra 2s changing the occasional matchup.

Our marquee event will have a community headline it that has constantly shit on it.
They only run tournaments for themselves but they are FGC.
Smashboards doesnt even have a street fighter section but we are the assholes.
Boy did our leaders and influencers get that one wrong.

Maybe Evo should have kept Melee, if only to split the registration numbers.
It wouldn’t have though. Melee is in its own little world.
The bigger issue is that no matter how much they show themselves to be culturally different from the FGC at large, people keep making excuses for them.
They’ll sandbag their own grind finals at Evo, they’ll boo their players going ultra hard on the defense…at some point people are gonna have to be honest about this.
For sure. And I don’t really care if tournaments make space for them generally, but that’s really not a side show you want taking over the main events, even on a fluke year.
Counter Ultras were super fun but you pretty much only got to use them when the opponent messed up and/or when you had the hardest read. Both Cammy and Fei-Long had an Ultra 1 that was very easy to confirm into and that was garanteed damage.
I ran Cammy pretty much U2 exclusively just to make people pay for dumb stuff with 450 damage but I think Blanka was the only matchup where it was a legitimately good pick because it took away his stupid U1 50:50.
I’m glad CPT and other tournaments are a thing. Have to focus on Evo less that way. Evo is like convention levels of clusterfuck large now any way for only 3 days.

I’m trying to remember the details, but I’m pretty sure there was a high profile Evo match where someone switched to a counter Ultra after getting slapped around by Viper burn kicks and it completely flipped the momentum of the match.
The Ultra 2 counters weren’t bad for specific matchups. You just surely weren’t going to be solo winning a major with Cammy’s counter ultra. Full stock ultras that have hit boxes are too necessary for damage dump punishes especially in a game where only a few characters can regularly save/have access to super.

ACtually spoke to an SRKer years ago about that. He said the CPT was going to body Evo in importance. After hearing Problem X just be called the Evo champ…it just kind of feels that way in commentators. I think for the players and community members Evo is it, but Capcom Cup gets shilled as more important. Not gonna lie, that kinda massively fucking sucks. Kind of the same way that SBO dying removed away some of the cool cultural elements of the scene overall.
Yeah the CPT is cool and all, but it ain’t the same as playing for that pride.

I just looked through 3 months of tournament results on Eventhubs.
Only one Smash tournament had fighting games in it. Not even the european ones had FGs. I don’t know wtf 3 majors you watched but apparently they were so “major” that not even Ehubs reported their results.
Dunno, I’ve a) cooperated a ton with the Norwegian Smash community for tournaments and b) genuinely don’t have a problem with them. Hell, I genuinely get along well with them, while I’m kinda having a problem with certain obnoxious, loud, self-proclaimed alpha-males that make up a lot of the old-school part of our Tekken community right now.
It might be that Norway is an outlier here, but I’m honestly starting to think it’s mostly the US Smash community that contain most of the smelly crybabies that make up the Smash player stereotype around here, rather than the Smash community as a whole.
