They should relaunch Street Fighter X Tekken with SFV’s graphics. And thickness. Julia would be a gift from heaven.
Frotzey is Frost now huh? Nope, don’t like it. Change it back.
Sylvia is anime as fuck, so fuck her.
kof is cool as a heck
too bad the online is both shit and dead
Then go and play BB or GG.
Oh I forgot Anime games have no neutral according to you.
No, it is not.
It doesn’t have a million things flying and happening on screen at the same time!
KOF is the FG for the womanly woman! With good grapplers, good big bodies and Takuma Sakazaki!
And King too, because she is too much of a woman.
KoF is anime. It’s a bit less anime, but still anime.
Also once you’re used to it, there is less happening on the screen than you think.
You need to get an open NAT.
I always found matches after 20 seconds at max. And that was with the 5 bar connection only criteria.
KOF XIV was a mistake to being with, so we ignore the existence of the likes of Sylvie.
I agree with playing bb tag, good game
Momochi’s Cody looking great already.
Man, feels good hearing the Japanese announcers say “Momochi Cody” once again.
#WeAreDime
I agree with a lot of Frost’s points.
The interplay in this game can be really wonky and unsatisfying, and this game is prone to big swings that seem more engineered than earned (VTrigger comebacks being a big factor most rounds).
Playing Ranked/Casual can also be unsatisfying in the long run. A somewhat depressing % of people playing online aren’t really playing a two player game and others are just playing to win before they lose. Winning against players like that is more about realizing what they’re doing and countering it and most of the time they don’t really adapt; sometimes they have a different way to throw themselves at you but just as often they just dial up the crazy and hope that works out. It isn’t always easy (at least for me) and it definitely feels good to beat these kinds of players, but it also isn’t as engaging as a fight where things shift more as the rounds go by.
And for the record I’m nooblet garbage fighting it out in the slums. But if I’m already feeling bits of this down here I can absolutely see where if you were really experienced playing SF playing this one online would be a drag.
Netcode still pisses me off and always will. I don’t think this game will ever have buttery smooth online (just something about Capcom’s ability to punt at the 5 yard line) but it definitely can and should be better than it is now. The core game is already mechanically a clusterfuck of scrambles, which can be frustrating enough; having that take place in noticeable rollback and/or when your inputs get eaten makes it feel not even worth bothering with.
Al that said, I also agree with Twinblades.
Probably because I’m coming at this game from the same place he has: this is the first SF game I’ve ever put any real time in playing against other humans, and its the first game I’ve really put “a lot” (relative to other FGs) in playing against other folks, online or otherwise (give or take playing a shitload of Vs games against friends when I was like 15).
So even though this game is mad basic and has wonky neutral, I’m still having a fun enough time trying to get a handle on it 'cause I don’t know any better. Plus I also have this weird drive of thinking that if the game is that simple and/or if the way people are playing online is really that whack, I should be able to learn it. So I’m gonna keep at it until I figure it out and can at least talk shit on the game from an informed perspective.
Also, and again this is mostly for myself, SFV is the one game out right now that has an active online ranked community so I have a straightforward set of goals to plug away at. Though the longer I play the more I understand that I can do something similar with any game, just by getting some player matches rolling and then doing some post-game analysis and training (though SFV does make it a bit easier than others by handling all the replays automatically).
For as shitty as playing against randos online is in this game, playing against folks here has been some of the most fun I’ve had playing video games. Its really hard to get groups together though due to schedule differences and the aforementioned shitty netcode so even though the community sort of survived the Great Sundering of SRK we mostly seem to be doing our own things instead of getting lounges rolling like before. I definitely miss playing against folks here but my schedule sucks so that is on me.
It is also hard for me to really throw a lot of hours at SFV at once. I can play it in 30-60 minute sets, maybe 2 hours at a stretch, but much past that I start to tune out. I’ve been mixing in UNIELst and Cross Tag to spice things up and that has been great. There are days where I want to just throw myself at those games and embrace the weeb I know I am. As stated before though I am stubborn about this game and am still mostly enjoying my time with it so I can fight off the siren call of airdashes. For now.
Embrace the air dashers
Plus BBTag has best Makoto
That was so clean, it actually looked a street fighter game
Cross Tag is great.
I don’t know about no Makoto (though I do want to give her a shot) but I’ve had fun with my random ass Kanji/Es team. I sort of want to keep that game on the back burner until all the chars are out so I can settle on a team, but I also don’t know that any of the upcoming chars are gonna do it for me in this game so I should probably stop fucking around.
Cody is definitely the character for Momochi. He has lots of good buttons and a fireball which is reminiscent of the shotos he used to play in IV and his immediate pick of Ken in SFV. He needs buttons and fireball that’s where he’s been best. Plus Cody is a character that can do some unga stuff, but usually gets there from playing neutral which fits to what he wants to do. Momochi isn’t crazy enough to go all out with air tatsus and VT2 Kolin stuff like other players are better fit for, so a character that can get most of their reward from the ground game is where it’s at.
I think Cody beats all the grapplers also (even though none of them are top 5 either way). Abi is very limited in what he can do if you play the neutral right. All of his charge unblockables get beat by reaction V Skill as the armor wears off on release before it makes contact. Normally it can still win vs buttons due to priority trade system, but V Skill becomes invincible at that point. f+HK and EX Zonk can whiff punish his s.HP on reaction also (f+HK for closer whiffs, EX Zonk for farther). Obviously the Cody player has to fall asleep for Abi to land a frontal jump on Cody so that takes care of the air coin drop for damage stuff. Plus if gets passive you can just whiff v skills while chucking fireballs to get free gauge.
I really like Cody, he was my main in SF4 since Super.
However, I am the type of person that can only use one character. Not sure if it is worth learning Cody, or spend time trying to level up my Akuma. Is there any matchup that Cody wins way easier than Akuma?
Cody requires remembering a lot of things in neutral to keep him up to shape, so if you can only learn one character you’re probably best off just sticking with Akuma before even considering matchups.
As far as matchups goes he would definitely do better vs Birdie than Akuma. Not way better, but you’d have much longer buttons and better reactionary stuff to dash up grabs and EX free willy. Even Tokido struggles to win vs Birdie due to how short ranged Akuma is and how good Birdie’s anti projectile and anti air game is. Cody obviously does better vs Abi, but Akuma doesn’t struggle as much vs Abi as he does vs Birdie. Everyone else Akuma can obviously fight well enough where it wouldn’t matter.
Yes, I don’t like fighting Birdie with Akuma, but I usually loose due to not respecting his options.
I hate fighting Guile (although Akuma has way more options against him than the rest of the cast), Rashid, Mika, Boxer and Cammy. Do you know anything about these matchups?
Akuma would probably be better off vs Guile, but I dont think Cody dies to Guile. Especially once Cody gets VT2 he can pipe reflect his booms and force him to change his gameplan a lot. Upwards rock forces him to change up his gameplan a lot also. Before trigger just have to be patient and fish for CC sweeps. Only need one to knock him on his butt and get momentum. Occasionally throw a fireball to clear space but not too many to get jumped on. Can V Skill through any fast booms done from a distance to get v gauge.
Rashid is Rashid. V Skill will help vs his air options but you’ll have to stick mostly to your buttons and Rashid is just a walking anti projectile character. Probably gonna be one of Cody’s harder matches as Rashid takes advantage of characters that aren’t mobile pretty badly. VT Pipe up rocks should help make him think about going to the air at least.
He beats Mika pretty easy. Always have a meterless throw invincible option vs any of her grab stuff and V Skill becomes attack invincible fast enough to blow up a lot of her strings. Her strings can only last so long since most of them are from moves that are minus on block and push her back. She has no EX move that’s plus to keep her turn like Laura. She can’t use charged HK as you can V Skill that on reaction and V Skill/s.HP/HK Ruffian covers most of her jump options. A lot of her nadeshiko left/right mix ups can be blown up by V Skill also and generally the option of it will make her think before doing them. Sweep outranges most of her normals also and puts her in HKD if she catches a CC.
Boxer he does pretty decent against. V Skill blow up on reaction his V Skill into overhead swing stuff. If he goes for the fake where he spins and stops just jab string him out of it. Can go toe to toe with his buttons so that isn’t really an issue and he can’t really change his jump trajectory so AA’s are good to go vs him.
Cammy can get bad if she gets in because her shimmy game is too strong to play around with V Skill too much if she gets in, but can definitely control neutral vs her and with V Skill she should be thinking twice about jumping a lot. Keeping her to the ground. s.HK and sweep outrange a lot of her buttons and can be used from ranges that are pretty safe vs her. If you land one, start going to town.
She’s another character your wife would be a fan of
BB has a lot of characters that would be “wife approved” Makoto’s design is definitely up there.
One of the upside of UNIELst is the character designs are rather tame for an anime game so that one doesn’t get me as many eyerolls.
